There is also this one, which is a cross-over with almost anything you can think of:
Andromeda, Chasing Amy, Dawson's Creek, Dogma, From Eroica with Love, Homicide, The Island, Man from UNCLE, Moulin Rouge, Mummy Returns, Queen of Swords, Rat Patrol, The Watcher, Wiseguy and Wolf Lake. And it's funny.

I thought I had reviewed it before, but I didn't see it on the list, so I'm grabbing the chance.
[added 2/16: My memory was right. elmey tells me it was previously recced on 8/16/2005 by laughingacademy]

( read an excerpt )

The Step to the Left Affair

comments

The format of the story is in single sentence "chapters" and is non-linear. The writer has an excellent handle on the constraints of this format and each sentence pulls you deeper into the over all story. Brendan is a freedom fighter who realizes that he's also a terrorist--but he can't stop fighting, any way he can.

Part of the Fire

comments

We're a small fandom, and most of us either know or have heard of each other (at least in LJ-space, or those affiliated with maryavatar's Andromeda Uncovered website and mailing list.) Sadly, the fandom fizzled out toward the end of the third season, with only a few diehards continuing to write and/or rec stories. Hopefully I can do my part to drum up interest in this fandom.

Speaking of Maryavatar, I decided that the first story/series I was going to rec would be her "Pouncing on People."

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper/Tyr
Author on LJ: maryavatar
Author Website: Amused and Abused
Why this must be read:

The most common portrayal of Tyr in fanfic is as a odd cross between Klingon and Vulcan. Tyr is shown as dominant, aggressive, and only interested in procreative sex, even in the slash fics (where it's explained as either "practice" or a "dominance" thing.)

Maryavatar takes a slightly different tack with "Pouncing on People." In the story, (a short series of linked PWP ficlets) Nietszcheans have a genetic predisposition to being attracted to certain useful survival traits such as intelligence, regardless of the sex of the individual they're attracted to--and Harper is a genius.

What results is a game of cat and mouse with Tyr pouncing on Harper, and Harper not minding very much. This story manages to be cute and funny, with a few brief bouts of seriousness, because even a light PWP needs to deal with Harper's backstory, IMO.

Pouncing on People

comments

Tyr narrates as his life evolves, as it could have evolved into a full and meaningful role among his people and his shipmates had the series not unraveled. Kit fleshes out the Nietzschean matriarchy and marriage customs and the relationships among the crew, primarily that between Tyr and Harper, that most popular and unlikely couple.

The Recreation of the Warrior

Note: I've had very limited online access this month, unexpectedly, and will make corrections. Another is the challenge of pairing two physically matched, strong, Alpha characters who were, if not enemies, at least competitive and deeply suspicious of each other.

In Omega, Becca Abbott proposes a strategy for Dylan to control his threatening shipmate, one rooted in the politics of Nietzschean culture. She's a remarkably clean, evocative writer who brings out the grain of her characters with deceptively effortless skill.

Retreat is one of three short stories that form a chain: Push, Retreat, and An Easy Trajectory. It takes place after "Angel Dark, Demon Bright," when the crew is dealing with guilt and survival, allegience and betrayal, fate and free will. The story focuses on Harper and his reactions, with Tyr taking a less central role. Tyr's involvement, however, is both pivotal and poignant, against the background of "Angel"'s events.

( a taste )

Retreat

comments

She's a perfectionist whose stories have that 'hand-crafted by skilled professionals for superior quality and style' feel. She's the only writer I know who not only makes me want to read Dylan/Tyr, but makes me enjoy it so damned much.

In Gravity, set early S1, Dylan is off-balance, both figuratively and literally. Tyr becomes something of an anchor point for him during an anti-gravity failure. The image of Tyr and Dylan strapped to a bed together while the Andromeda hurtles through slipstream is one that says with you.

( Excerpt )

Gravity

comments

The scorching oh-god-my-undies-are-burning hotness. I've never watched X-Files, but this still rates as the hottest Andromeda crossover I've read. And trust me, there was some pretty stiff competition. Angyl and Orithain write really great sex; there's an interesting story there too, but I read it for the sex. Tyr and Krychek are quite disgustingly pretty, in an alpha-male way, and rubbing up against each other... the mental movie almost shorted out my brain.

( Excerpt )

A Rat Out Of Time

comments

Big time. It's a pre-Andromeda story. Pre-Maru even, set before Harper met up with Beka and escaped to a better life. Harper's survival on Earth through prostitution is arguably canon, as one of the original writers, Zack Stenz, said this about Harper's past:

A realistic "Harper growing up on Earth" prequel would probably be equal parts City of God, Salaam Bombay, and My Own Private Idaho.

In the Kitchen was written before he said that, but I know a lot of us had been thinking it. Harper is young here, but he's still a survivor, doing what he has to do and making the most of it. Tyr is the Tyr was saw in season one, a mercenary, an assassin, a great cook...

And there's blisteringly hot sex and spanking! Oh yes, it hits my kinks.

( Excerpt )

In the Kitchen

comments

In this story however, Dylan and Harper are thrown back in time to before the Fall. They land on Tarn-Vedra, centre of the Commonwealth and Dylan's homeworld. Viridian makes pre-Fall Tarn-Vedra come alive; she introduces well-rounded original characters and perfectly describes a civilisation complacent in its belief that it is the invincible centre of the universe. I found it fascinating that Harper thrives in this new environment, attending university and making friends (and enemies), while Dylan becomes withdrawn and depressed, unwilling to spend any time in a place where he once belonged.
( Excerpt )

In the Falling Away

comments

Which is something that was almost completely absent from the show. For six months Harper lived with a death sentence, and trauma like that doesn't just disappear overnight. In Hypothermia Tyr stops Harper from physically freezing to death during a malfunction on the Maru, and at the same time triggers the start of an emotional thaw. I could blather on for pages about why this is my favourite Tyr/Harper story, but the excerpt will be far more eloquent.

( Excerpt )

Hypothermia

comments

I'm a great big Tyr/Harper slasher, but I'll roll over and beg for anything well-written and entertaining. Which is why my first rec is almost gen.

Fandom: Andromeda
Pairing: Tyr/Rommie, Harper/Trance (sort of)
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Fanfiction.net profile
Why this must be read: Because it's hilarious if you know Andromeda, and hilarious if you know Shakespeare, and you will laugh up a lung if you know both. It's one of Shakespeare's finest tragedies dressed up as a Shakespearian comedy, written for a sci-fi audience. (:D)

this here story is one of a handful that try and explore the lost AU that comes before "Ouroboros"... or is it after "Ouroboros?" either way, it looks at the confusion and sense of loss Beka feels as she loses one friend for another she thought she'd lost long ago.

How Deep

comments
