I know the Terminator franchise predates the Buffyverse by over a decade, but for me, I never would have discovered or so loved the former without the latter. Plus, Sarah Connor would slay the crap out of any vampire foolish enough to cross her path, Called or no, and she's basically been doing the work of a Watcher as long as we've known her, right? This isn't perhaps the best-written fic out there, but it's a damn good idea. (And if you want another quality rec before I sign off, loop back to Seven Sunday Mother-Daughter Mornings, which has already been recced here.)

( Remember; it’s in your best interests to keep John safe. )

She Is Destiny

comments

As the central character of TSCC--Sarah herself--is female, and the human resistance has plenty of room for women, we know this isn't a universe that's particularly or inherently misogynistic...but gender still has a role to play, and "lost forever in the desert" is a smart and deeply felt exploration of that. The details of "Jane Connor" and her relationship to machines and metal are particularly interesting to me, and it's curious how much and how little changes with a simple flip of a chromosome.

( Light spit across her mother’s face, her open eyes and smoothed mouth, her mother staring down her own mortality and tucking it away into the crease of a one-day scar. )

lost forever in the desert

comments

John Connor becomes the leader he was always supposed to be in a lot of fics, but this one takes into account his age, his strange relationship(s) with Allison/Cameron an what, exactly, Catherine Weaver and John Henry were more or less up to.

( No, the worst part is his mom’s long dead and there’s nobody left to remind him that Cameron was just a machine. )

gone to meet your maker

*Seriously, has Josh Friedman or anyone explained what was going to happen had they stayed on the air?

comments

John's one of the human characters I'm interested in least in the Terminator universe, but this is one of those fics that makes me rethink my stance.

( Maybe it was because the last place they lodged, it was mostly squirrel meat and Saltines. )

Cold Comfort

comments

It incorporates elements of the latter movies while staying firmly rooted in the TSCC continuity, and the characterization is right on, especially with Sarah.

( He sounds sure, confident in that. In this fic, the author explores Allison's experiences, in relation to John and to her time as a captive and unwilling cyborg model. The woman presented here is savvy and skeptical--she doesn't quite accept the mythos of John Connor, even as she falls into his circle--and the way she deals with the machine(s) that will be Cameron gave me a new respect for a character I hadn't thought much about before.

( A bar code instead of the name she refused to say. This story only takes T1 into account (and was written well before TSCC premiered), but I would've loved to see it extended to include and further complicate later events.

( Besides, what could a woman so obviously pregnant do in a situation like this? )

The Unwritten Future

comments

It's het but not particularly shippy--this pair is kindred spirits more than lovers, and the focus here is more on the good fight and the toll it takes on people who have been fighting for too long and still have miles to go.

( Then Skynet invents time travel, and all bets are off. )

Hang In There, Slayer

comments

It's debatable whether they even like each other as co-people. But they need each other, and the understand each other, and ultimately they don't really have anyone else to connect with, to a certain extent. So here we have a fic that (briefly) explores their relationship and its inherent complications and twists. It's also fairly hot *and* squarely in character--a rare combination.

( Derek thinks maybe things were a lot less fucked-up living in the middle of a war zone, and that's probably the most fucked-up part of it all. )

Daze

comments

Amilyn does a beautiful job of showing both Sarah's complicated but often warm love for her son and her willingness to kick ass.

*I dream of crossovers where she shoots things alongside River Song. Or Zoe Washburn. Or both, I'm not picky.

( The men at the gun stores were gruff but protective. This fic assumes that he was always a machine (rather than being replaced by one, a la Catherine Weaver) and runs with it to some interesting places, playing off of Cameron's point about people being fooled by machines.

( His facility with numbers always awed her, a talent that lay somewhere between autistic and otherworldly. )

Someone I Used To Know

comments

The fic is sad and sweet and worth a read.

( Some of the older tunnel dwellers disliked even the idea of eating rats, but Riley had never known anything else. This story is short and fun, and it reminds me more than a bit of the early seasons of Buffy, where our heroes do what they do and everyone else is completely clueless and attempting to rationalize.

( They have to pass through the school's metal detectors again, but they wave Cameron through after she reminds them. )

She Moves (In Mysterious Ways)

comments

The author uses the numbered format in effective serve of both the narrative and the timey-wimey-ness of the Terminator 'verse. In less than a thousand words, zhe also does an exceptional job of piecing together and pulling apart Derek's ultimately very complicated relationship with his once and future nephew.

( Lie to me. Following the cliffhanger of "Born to Run," Sarah does what she needs to do to ensure that humanity still gets its savior and the Reese brothers still go back in time. There's an impressive blend of old and new characters, some good shippy times, and though it'll take a bit for everything to make sense, this story is well worth the read.

( Their shared climax felt and sounded like a mortal wound. )

Convergence

comments

There should be a reasonable variety of fic. :)

Fandom: TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES/TERMINATOR (movie-verse)
Characters/Pairing: Sarah-centric, mostly gen (some Sarah/Derek).
Length: 5400 words
Author on LJ: irony_rocks
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:
This is a post-finale fic where, in John's absence, Sarah rises to leadership in humanity's fight for survival. The author has a fantastic grasp on Sarah's character, and how she is basically already a leader, already that person who maintains emotional distance from others. The fic seamlessly blends in movie-verse characters (Kate Brewster), and characters younger than the age we see them at in the series (Derek, Kyle, Allison).

White Rabbit

comments

I'll admit these are not two fandoms that automatically scream out 'crossover', but the author does a great job bringing these very different canons together.

In all his months of training and battle with Dog Company, no one had ever noticed anything out of the ordinary. Speirs had never even had to lie. The subject simply never came up. The complete success of his efforts at passing must have made him complacent, thrown off his calculations, because Lipton notices right after Foy.

Appropriate Responses

comments

Kyle and Sarah, together, and the love that's between them makes for some nice scenes in this fic. But there's also Kyle's reaction when Sarah says she's pregnant, and the reality of why he is there crashes back down on him.

Revelations

comments
