Last Inception rec of the month! I do hope this fandom manages to hobble on and survive for a long while. There's still great fic to be read.

Eames only slides out of his armour for one person.

Told from the perspective of an unknown woman who goes to Spain and meets Eames. It almost seems like practice of fandom no’s with an OFC that meets and starts a relationship with a canon character, a meandering POV narrative that’s so vague it almost reads like 2nd person.

What this fic does by the end though, what it’s woven throughout, is an ending that’s at once tragic and joyous as it throws everything on its head. I would beg anyone thrown off by the premise to give this fic a chance because it’s so much more than what it seems that it seems haunting and beautiful.

Both men must confront their past and heal old wounds in order to bring a psychopath to justice.

Cop AU. Fantastically constructed world where Arthur is a Chicago detective under Captain Cobb, has history with former partner Eames (now with the FBI), and an old serial killer resurfaces to taunt Arthur. Certain aspects of the character’s personalities translate beautifully over to the real world and new professions. Also, the plot relating to the case is well spun and suspenseful like a good procedural.

Lieutenant Arthur leaves his post at an international training camp for dream sharing with his name on classified research and a fondness for Flying Officer Eames of the Royal Air Force. He isn't expecting to see Eames again, and he especially isn't expecting them both to be independently captured by an international coalition hellbent on distributing all possible information on the PASIV device to the general population. After negotiations for their release, the world's leading dream psychiatrist is brought on board to help with their rehabilitation. Dr. Mal Cobb isn't sure if she's up to the task.

AU- a world in which the ‘what are the implications of the technology existing’ has more negative consequences than just creating mind thieves. The story starts with the military research into the limitations of the PASIV, but soon takes a sharp turn where Arthur, Eames, and Yusef are kidnapped by terrorists who try to torture the secrets of the PASIV out of them. They get rescued, but the military isn’t above using their experiences and trauma to get further information on the nature of the technology. Though character interactions- in training, in captivity, in recovery, the fic paints a world that allows for the consequences of mind technology to bring out the worst in people who see every opportunity to take advantage of it.

The nights are long in Arkham because not everyone sleeps, it’s not like insanity has a timetable.

I felt conflicted about this rec for half a second, but I love it too much not to share. It’s a Batman AU taking place in Arkham Asylum. It’s a fic where the asylum for the dangerously criminally insane are housed by familiar (Batman’s villains) faces, and Arthur (with his own dark past) is on staff. Arthur finds himself becoming fascinated and obsessed with the sometimes charming, sometimes incredibly dangerous multiple-personality-disorder having Eames. It’s how a city like Gotham sinks its dark hooks into everything and pervades every nook and cranny until all things dark, twisted, and insane becomes appealing and fascinating. (Written before The Dark Knight Rises, so the characters aren’t actually standins for Bane/ Blake)

A feel-good 10 Things I hate About You AU. With Dom as Cameron, Mal and Arthur as Bianca and Kat respectively, and Eames as Patrick. Yusuf as Arthur’s bff, Robert Fisher as Joey. And Saito as Ms. Perky the guidance counselor. The Joseph Gordon-Levitt shuffling was amusing enough, but this AU is adorable and sweet.
The characters manage to fall into their assigned roles in the scenario while still managing to be recognizable as their canon counterparts- Dom has plans but maybe isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, Arthur is serious and focused, Eames is charming and relaxed, and Saito is the guidance counselor who has a presence everyone seems to feel.

Yesterday was the 3 year Inception anniversary, but I didn’t want to post 2 days in a row, so here we are.

Eames uses the PASIV to try and wake Arthur up from a coma. There’s the issue of trying to get Arthur to believe that what he’s experiencing is a coma and not the real world. There’s the effort to try to solve a (partially) medical issue through the careful application of illegal drugs and trying to help the brain by shocking the subconscious. There’s the author describing part of Arthur’s dreamscape a fortress of solitude. It’s an interesting look at the pitfalls that could happen from delving in and out of people’s heads through the use of strange chemical concoctions, but it’s also taking the contentious relationship Arthur and Eames have, where they’re still helplessly drawn to each other, and using it to problem-solve their way through strategies to wake Arthur up.

Arthur and Eames adopt a kid and raise that kid into Neal Caffrey.

A fic (and its continuation -by a different author) Skybird is mostly from Neal’s POV as he’s a pickpocket kid on the streets taken in by (secretly married spies) Arthur & Eames. They feed his hunger for art and culture (and expose him to the sartorial arts and also stealing and conning). Then Arthur’s boss’s wife kills herself and Arthur leaves the family behind to run around taking dream share jobs with Dom Cobb. Only for a month he said. Eames and Neal travel around the world together for years, running cons, stealing art, before the Inception job happens and Neal can see his parents reunited.

In the sequel, Neal’s working for the FBI and Peter Burke, and his parents come to town for a visit. And someone tries to frame them. Nel has to get the FBI to clear his parents’ names.

The fics are mostly focused on Neal’s pov, and it’s a beautiful mash-up of worlds that make you go ‘suits!’ or ‘con men!’ or ‘art!’. It’s an interesting look at how the personalities Arthur and Eames seem to have could mash up and be distilled into the type of classy sophistication Neal Caffrey puts forth.

An outsider-POV Mike Jones (the OC) keeps hearing the stories about Arthur (almost impossibly handsome and badass) around the dream share community for years until he finally gets the chance to meet the legend. (Along with Eames who also has his own share of reputation making stories). Then Jones has his own chance to pass on his story about the legends.

There are so many ways for things to go wrong, from the PASIV tech to experimental somancin mixes. Yusuf creates a batch that gives Arthur, Ariadne, then Eames all 24 hour amnesia in turns. The ‘it’s complicated’ relationship that Arthur and Eames are pretending is totally fine doesn’t remain unscathed after their actions and experiences with amnesia.

I love a good genderbend, and this fic certainly doesn’t disappoint. Told from the perspective of (always)female-Eames mostly during the period of time she (and Arthur) are in Australia, gathering up intel on Fisher. And the character construction is absolutely brilliant. Eames is still flirty and brilliant and charming, frighteningly competent with her forgery skills, her military background, and the ease and naturalism she has moving through life.

Arthur is an assassin hired to kill a seemingly unremarkable English actor named Eames, but a chance meeting has Arthur falling for his target instead.

The thing that I find great about Inception fic is how writers can spin insanely different and creative backgrounds for the character and still have it fit within the realm of canon in an ‘all roads lead to Rome” kind of way (with some tweaking). Here, Arthur is a silent deadly killer with a fun best friend in Ariadne (who doesn't know about his job). Eames is a charming brilliant actor who barely lets hints of his secret past sneak though, but he's certainty catches Arthur's attention. Then they all end up years later in Dream Share, performing inception like it was where they were supposed to end up.

So I signed up for this fandom when I realized that a) there’s still pretty awesome fic being written, and b) there’s so much good fic out there that it's a pleasent way to spend forever working through it all. The recs already on this comm barely scratch the surface of good reads out there and I wanted to add to that list if I could.

"Everyone knows Eames was trying to accomplish inception for years. Are you expecting me to believe you tried it once and pulled it off?"

Comedic, in the realm of canon, takes the idea of ‘Dom Cobb was incompetent”, and tells the fic from his point of view. Fandom, or at least the parts of it I’m familiar with, has seem to come to the consensus that Dom Cobb really didn’t do much in the film except screw everything up at nearly every turn. In this fic, Cobb doesn’t seem to realize that and after sitting at home with his kids for a while, wants to get back in the game. A number of people aren’t too happy about that including most of his former inception teammates. With good reason.

Told from the perspective of a resoundingly clueless POV (Cobb), the comedy oozes through the tone and the perspective and the sheer clueless in regards to viewing the reactions to everyone around him.

Summary: Eames turns to him during a simple blueprint discussion and says casually, "You settled late, didn't you?" Or, an Inception/His Dark Materials fusion fic.

Why this must be read: Keeping in the tradition of most Inception and HDM fic, foxxcub presents a story that really focuses on how aspects of working in dreams affect characters, as shown through daemons. The idea of forgery is done nicely, with Eames reacting in a subtle but powerful way to having to reshape his own soul. Arthur's storyline focuses on how he and others view himself versus who he really is. It's these discrepancies that make this fic a stand-out classic.

This fic also does angst marvelously in showing the difference between emotional and physical closeness or separation, and how both can affect a person.

Why this must be read: I love this story. Truly, madly, deeply, I love it because it's beautiful and brilliant, and the world these two authors have created is amazing. I put off reading it for a while after the Big Bangs were posted because I found the summary very complex and it almost seemed like it might be a crossover of some type. It's not. But I can honestly say, the summary does not do it justice.

Here's what the story is: It's world-building at its best - I fell into this world, believed it, wanted to see more of it. Not everything is explained or immediately clear, but you need to be willing to let the story unfold. It's the Inception characters but somehow larger than life and still not quite on the right side of the law. It's the team coming together and learning about one another and fighting for something. It's about love and loyalty, tradition and technology, how society teaches us to take sides.

You'll recognize aspects of the movie, but in completely different ways. Ariadne is forced to grow up and accept some hard truths because of her association with these men. Yusuf is a good friend, but can he be trusted? Dom, still learning how to leave Mal behind. Arthur and Eames trying to reconcile their differences with their strange compatibility; they should hate each other, but they're saving one another.

I don't want to tell you too much, but honestly, read it for the image of Eames as a tattooed man out of time who wears the sins of the world on his flesh in order to remember, and Arthur, who is just broken enough to be able to see beyond the technology Eames hides behind ... it's the kind of screwed-up love story that makes me ache in every way possible for everyone involved. It's absolutely something you should read. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

The Lying Pinwheel by Metarie (PG)

Why this must be read: I've always thought Robert is a fascinating character in Inception. He's someone we feel a little sorry for--he's being manipulated, after all--but at the same time, he's not immediately likable. No one really stops to consider (at least not for very long) how emotionally screwed up this guy might be even before they start messing around with his head.

When Robert Fischer catches sight of Ariadne in a hotel, he follows her, and they make a connection. What Ariadne's motivations might be aren't clear, which I think makes the story that much more interesting. Is it a coincidence? Is it another manipulation? Is she genuinely interested in Robert? And what happens when Robert's questions (and Ariadne's answers) lead to questions that reveal more and more of the truth?

In a fandom that tends to revel in its messy revenge stories, this is a nice introspective look at what learning the truth might mean for Robert, and whether knowing would make any difference at all.

Why this must be read: Last season Supernatural had an episode called The French Mistake wherein Sam and Dean end up in an alternate reality where they're the actors who play them on TV. This Inception fic borrows the same premise and runs with it. What if Arthur and Eames ended up in a place where everyone else thinks they're actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy? What if they're filming a movie called Inception?

The story is by turns funny, sweet, and tense as Arthur and Eames try to sort out who they're supposed to be in this new reality, and who they are to one another (in any reality). More importantly, they need to figure out if there's any way they can get back to the world they belong in before they're expected to carry on with the lives that Tom and Joe have established for themselves. There are some elements of RPF ... but it's really a story about Arthur and Eames.

Why this must be read: I'm an OTP happy endings girl. I'm not particularly fond of stories where my two favourite guys don't get together, but sometimes there's a story that manages to have so many good things in it, it's worth the twinge of sadness it brings. For example, Eames here is afraid of marine mammals, which is absolutely priceless, and at one point he's asked to forge a parrot. It's just as hilarious as you can imagine.

And all the while, he's resigned to being in love with an Arthur who is straight and can't love him back. Eames tries his very best to hide his feelings from Arthur, but that's easier said than done, and the two of them are troubled about the strain it's putting on their friendship. What I really like about this story is that Arthur and Eames are friends, and genuinely care about each other, and Eames is understanding of the position he's putting Arthur in. It doesn't change how either of them feels, though, and what could be something unbearably sad turns out to have a hopeful ending.

Why this must be read: This story is really all about Arthur after inception, and who he's become. He takes the time to travel around the States, visiting places that used to be home, and places where there are people he's known before. It's an exploration of perspective, and how a key event in life tends to make a person think about their experiences and achievements, and to consider what the future might hold.

Arthur does eventually end up on Eames' doorstep, but it's not about romance, it's about trust. Arthur has a question he needs answered, and there's only one person he thinks he can believe. It's an intricate and thoughtful look into Arthur's character.

Why this must be read: I've been a fan of this author's work since long before this name and this fandom, and I know whenever I see her name attached to something I'm going to get a well-written story. I'm also a sucker for a sweet hurt/comfort piece and this just happens to contain one of the best lines I think I've ever read in a H/C story:

“Did you just try to kiss my subdural hematoma better?”

Eames as a self-appointed Florence Nightingale is funny, slightly absurd, caring while trying to pretend not to. It's just so Arthur and Eames.

Why this must be read: I've read lots of fic inspired by strange things, but I think this was the first (possibly only) one I've read that's based on a commercial. The commercial itself is funny, but the story is ten times funnier. Seriously. This is the kind of story where you make those ridiculous snorting laughs and the ones where you just gasp stupidly for air while barking like a seal.

The premise is simple. Arthur works (with Ariadne and Yusuf) for a company that will (for a fee) handle your messy break-up for you. It's made Arthur pretty much give up on the concept of love and romance, but he happens to live next door to Eames, who slowly works away at Arthur's reluctance to believe in good things. You can read this fic because it's funny, or you can read it because it's also a great story and a delightfully innocent romance that's still believable.

( The slogan on the scooter is supposed to say 'No Sad, Big Smile Break-Up Service', but for the past few months it's just been 'Nads', minus all the spaces and missing letters. )

Why this must be read: In my humble opinion, Arthur and Eames are best when they're being awesome and badass. In this story, they're all that, plus they still manage to be delightfully silly and romantic. But don't think this is a bit of fluff ... it has light moments, laugh out loud ones, a bit of tension, a job, a smidge of hurt/comfort, some Doctor Who, and all the terror that comes with realizing you're invested in someone else. It's a lovely story that has something for every mood.

Why this must be read: For some reason, I always think of this as the story where Arthur is "almost kidnapped." The "almost kidnapping" plays a central role in the story, and like any good author, svilleficrecs teases the reader along with hints and small portions of truth. What happens in the wake of the kidnapping-that-wasn't pushes Arthur and Eames to deal with who they are to one another. In a larger sense, the story is about Arthur and Eames, Dom and Mal. It's about the people they used to be, and the people they are now. It's also about how they see themselves and each other, and how that vision isn't always accurate.

Much of the story is Arthur and Eames talking to one another, bantering, sharing details and correcting assumptions. It's one of those stories where maybe not a lot happens in some ways, but the things they talk about are fundamental to understanding the characters. You could think of this as an extended character study, and I like how there's flirting and friendship, but also the ability to call one another on bullshit, as well as some genuine moments of learning about themselves and each other.

Plus, don't you really want to know what happened between Arthur and Eames on the night Arthur can't remember? The truth might surprise you.

Why this must be read: Trojie writes amazingly good, amazingly hot fic, and even if certain things aren't your kinks, you should read this anyway. You don't usually read cross-dressing fic? This has Eames in a kilt, and it's freakin' hot, trust me. You don't usually read bondage, even light bondage? This has Eames' hands loosely wrapped with Arthur's tie, and it's all about trust. It's metaphorical bondage! Not fond of one of them seducing someone else for work? It happens off-screen, it's necessary to the plot, and seriously, this is all about the difference between what you do because you have to and what you do because you need or want to.

What I love most about this story, I think, is the level of trust between the two characters. Arthur asks for help, Eames goes. Arthur tells Eames he can go home, and Eames follows him anyway. Arthur needs ... and Eames lets him. It's not about feelings and it's not just about sex, it's all about trusting someone with everything that you are, and that makes this an amazing story.
