Title: Two immortals walk into a bar... by Eledhwen
Pairing: Captain Jack Harkness/Captain Jack Sparrow
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen
Length: 1,243 words
Author Website: Dreamy Aspirations
Why this must be read:
Of all of the many and varied stories with this particular crossover pairing (because, really, how could you not want to read/write it?), this one is my favorite. Just a short little piece that's really more character study and atmospheric rather than plotty.

Fandom: FIREFLY/PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Gen
Length: 7,727 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pandarus
Author Website: just her lj
Why this must be read: This is what the pilot episode of Firefly would have looked like in the PotC 'verse, with just a bit of Tam Lin thrown in for extra flavoring. What's amazing is how seamless this crossover is, and how completely FayJay makes it all work. The voices are perfectly in-character, yet shifted just enough to be appropriate through the lens of PotC. All the landmarks of canon are still there, but FayJay reinterprets them brilliantly to fit with PotC (and Tam Lin) canon as well. To top all that off, this is a wonderfully inventive tale with sparkling dialogue, sharp characterizations, and a shiny plot.

I've fallen behind in my recs, but I'm making an attempt to catch up! There should be two more by the end of the weekend.

Fandom: ANGEL/PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Illyria/Captain Jack Sparrow
Length: 1000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] voleuse
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] moodfic
Why this must be read: Both characters are rather strange. Illyria is a long-forgotten god-king in a slender human vessel. Captain Jack Sparrow is a half-crazed, often drunk pirate. Together they... get along rather well, actually. I love Jack's acceptance of the fact that Illyria is divine and his off-centre flattery that would actually amuse a being such as herself. Despite the community name, this didn't hurt my brain as much as I thought it would. (As a note, the author rated it R, but it's pretty tame.)

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Title: My Friendliest and its sequel Rubicon
Length: 50,000 words, combined.
Pairing: Beckett/OFC
Author: GreenWood Elf
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] celticbard76
Why this must be read: Beckett's personal life is explored through a series of letters between himself and his wife, Anne. The author has a good grip on the epistolary style of writing, and has clearly researched the genre well. This research has also bled into the prose, which is replete with rich details of eighteenth century life. The suspense of the work is quietly directed and is handled with a delicate, subtle richness.

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Title:A Pirate's Life For Me
Pairing: None. Jack, Gibbs
Length: about 2,000 words
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mamazano
Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] mamazano has a wonderful handle on Gibb's speech, a feat not easily achieved. The banter between him and Jack is spot on, and the subject of sea and women and how the two don't easily mix is as close to a canon offscreen moment between the two as one could hope for. The author has a highly poetic style, and this translates well in PoTC fanfiction.

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack the Monkey.
Length: about 3,000 words
Author: Dr. Sugar
Why this must be read:

A Jack the Monkey centered fic that not only explains his origins, but also has his POV. Lovely little story with thoughtful descriptions and a logical explanation of Jack's closeness to Barbossa. It's interesting to see how his thieving ways were present very early on in his life :P.

A very cute story, and well worth a read:

Why this must be read:

This is a beautifully written piece with a 'future' Jack meeting someone one wouldn't expect. While there have been many of this genre written badly over the decades, this_weirdness has the innate skill to turn that expectation on its head and create a story that is both literary and thought-provoking.

Why this must be read:

These stories concentrate on Jack post-Fountain Of Youth and follows him on an uneven path through subsequent history. "Greetings, passengers of the Pirates of the Caribbean crack van. As has been expressed earlier, please refrain from rolling down your windows to feed Jack Sparrow peanuts. As you have witnessed, the monkey has much faster reflexes, and is getting a little on the tubby side thanks to treats from visitors.

If you look to your right, you will witness the rare form of The Flying Dutchman sailing fairly closely alongside us. Considering how we've had some issues with the brakes on the crack van as of late, we suggest you say a few prayers in the religious context of your choice and review the pictures of your friends and family within your wallets. With mortality permitting, there will be a rest stop at a local canteen within the hour."

Fandom: Pirates Of The Caribbean
Pairing: none. Characters are Will, Bootstrap, Norrington, crew of the Dutchman
Length: Novella (complete)
Author: Rokhal
Author Website: Author's page at fanfiction.net
Why this must be read: There are very few stories that make any real attempt to describe Captain Turner's 'life' on The Flying Dutchman, and Rokhal does it with not only highly original flair and wit but with realistic imagery and chilling understanding. The characters of the crew are well integrated into the story, as is Will's relationship as it both grows and distances from them. The plot is shaky and confusing at times, but this can be forgiven thanks to the rich details of sea life and the added components of fantasy as Will travels to the upside down world of Undersea. The author's notes at the end of the chapters are especially fun, giving the story a lighter tone than its subject may suggest.

Greetings! My name is [livejournal.com profile] pink_bagels and I am your Pirates of the Caribbean driver for the month of June. Please place your tray tables in the upright, locked position, and ensure your seatbelts are correctly fastened. Emergency exits are at the top left hand side of your screen for Mac users, and the upper right hand corner for those on PCs. We are currently driving on laminate flooring at an altitude approximatly the height of a desk chair. Weather conditions are mixed, with warm sunshine eclipsed at intervals by the grey cover of violent ocean tempests. If you currently look out the left side passenger window, you will gain a glimpse of the pirate Jack Sparrow doing something naughty with a monkey and a banana and generally irritating both. On the right hand side, several flagships of the 18th century can be seen in the distance, accompanied by a large squid-like creature who goes by the name of Davy Jones. Since his proximity is close to the potc crack van, the afternoon lunch selection of calamari will not be served out of respect for our subjects.

We are proud to have you on board the Pirates of the Caribbean crack van, and we hope you enjoy your stay.

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack/OFC
Length: VERY long...Ongoing
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] compassrose7577
Author Website: http://compassrose7577.livejournal.com/16521.html#cutid1
Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] compassrose7577 has an incredible handle on not only Jack's character, but also how he relates to his crew. Her settings are richly conveyed, her fight scenes excellently portrayed, and all on the backdrop of a pirate ship which is not only Jack's one true love, but also the home of his extended pirate family. Getting to know these side characters so intimately and how they relate to Jack is a wonderful expansion on his character. Yes, this story has an original character, but she is also well developed, and the suspenseful UST between her and Jack is played out to an almost tortuous degree. In my opinion, this shows a great deal of restraint on the part of the author, and by the time we do get our resolution, it's a sigh of relief for all involved :P.

This compelling story takes us places within Jack's past that had only been hinted at and not explored in the films, all on a rich backdrop of silly aunts, noble pirate friends and swashbuckling fight scenes. For anyone who is a fan of crisp dialogue and a tale that whisks one away onto the open sea, this has clearly been written for *you*.

Another version of Jack Sparrow's childhood, this time set in Ireland: "Young John Teague of Dublin indulges in some gratuitous Latin with a little blasphemy on the side." Why this must be read...

I have rec'ed [livejournal.com profile] p0wdermonkey's work before, she's one of my favorite writers, having a firm grasp on the combination of adventure, humor, fantasy, angst, and down-to-earth nautical saltiness that makes up the best PotC fanfic. Once again, she's topped herself with her recent offering, Tall Ship Tales, a series that gives us her take on Jack's backstory. The "prequels" involve Jack's conception and birth, and the five main tales, Jack's life from his pov, are absolute hilarious (and sometimes horrifying) perfection! Don't miss...

Length: 13 Chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] salr323

Why this must be read...

Posted a chapter a day as a holiday gift to all of us last year, this is one of the best Jack/Elizabeth stories ever, with a lot of post-At World's End angst, a bit of comedy, fabulous romance, heart-stopping adventure, spot-on characterizations, excellent period detail, writing of the highest caliber, AND it's a road-trip story, which is one of my favorite things in life. Will/Elizabeth is treated with respect as well, and Will has a memorable turn in his capacity as Captain of the Flying Dutchman.

Summary: Shipwreck Cove has been attacked, and Pirate King Elizabeth has been taken to England and thrown in prison. As usual, it's Jack to the rescue.

30th-Apr-2008 10:59 pm Men Must Work snippet and series by Commodorified and Diane (PG through Mature)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: James Norrington/Jack Sparrow, Will Turner/Elizabeth Swann, Theo Groves/Andrew Gillette
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] commodorified and [livejournal.com profile] gryphons_lair
Author Website: The Scriptorium
Why this must be read:

Men Must Work is the title of a short snippet and a series of longer stories, all of which revolve around the economic and vocational underpinnings of several PotC characters.

The snippet by [livejournal.com profile] commodorified provides a stark, heartrending glimpse of Jack and James stealing bits of time together despite the danger of their respective positions. The maturity and pathos of their devotion displays a beautiful depth, poised on the knife edge of tragedy.

The Men Must Work series by [livejournal.com profile] gryphons_lair begins with several vignettes showcasing key moments in each character's career. In "Leverage" Jack works a bit of piratical mastery, demonstrating the knack for negotiation and twisty deal-making that made him famous and kept him safe. "Mastery" follows Will's apprenticeship to Lucas Brown and explains poignantly how the man who taught Will to fold metal with such skill could have become the drunkard in CotBP. Captain Norrington plays a delicate game with duty, morality, and naval regulations in "Chain of Command" as he strives to do the right thing within an institution that does not always adhere to his ethical standards.

The last five stories of the series chart a Jack/James arc, beginning with the very short "Of Rough Seas and Solid Earth" and "Opportunity," which both create a bridge bringing together all the characters previously referenced, then developing through two longer pieces and an epilogue. "Dreams and Desire" begins with both James and Jack haunted by desires they deem inappropriate for their station in life in the wake of CotBP. A chance meeting makes them viscerally reconsider the possibilities. "Dance With Me" deals with the possible social repercussions of introducing newly legitimized Privateer Captain Sparrow into Port Royal high society, as Jack and James destroy a wig and a husband-hunter's evening in their dance of subterfuge to find a balance between their desires and society's demands.

Vidder: Steph
Musical artist: Damien Rice
Pairing: James Norrington/Elizabeth Swann
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anothersoapbox
Vidder's website:
Why this vid kicks ass:

When I saw Damien Rice in concert he framed "Cheers, Darling" as an overly melodramatic retelling of this one time he tried to pick up a girl in a bar who turned out to already have a boyfriend. While James' unrequited passion in Pirates of the Caribbean received rather more epic treatment, the end of the first film leaves James in a rather maudlin, bitter place - his angst both absurdly extreme and desperately sincere. This vid aches in exactly the same self-deprecating, painfully ironic way as Norrington in Dead Man's Chest, and offers a bitting look at the evolution of his feelings for Elizabeth as she turns away from him again and again and again. The final montage of Elizabeth with what seems like everyone but James as he watches on, heartbroken, is particularly well executed. (Watch also for the clever use of the lines "Here's to you and your lover boy/lover man")

This vid contains a ton of effects: black and white, blanked out sections, cuts that dramatize musical tones, subtitles, inter-textual references, freeze frames, and even more! What does it all mean? Artistic genius or distracting pyrotechnics? I'm fonder of some of these techniques than others, but if nothing else they add another layer of meaning to ponder on top of some very solid storytelling and evocative emotional moments.

Arsenic always provides gorgeous prose, layered characterizations, and satisfying h/c, and her only Pirates of the Caribbean piece is no exception. Captain Jack takes on more than he bargained for in an effort to repay the leniency granted him at the end of CotBP. Freedom has many meanings, and it heals everyone differently. Going Price provides excellent treatment of secondary characters including Anamaria, a realistically complicated look at trauma recovery, and a long, slow slide into love and the possibility of a new life.

Why this must be read: For Crossover Day, here is a fic by Little Owl, whose work is by turns comical, steamy and angsty. All in this one fic, too. I really admire her smooth transitions in her long story, though 'Art' is a mid-length PWP that starts out with a literal bang: Padawan Kenobi crashes his speeder, a very special red Fer'ahri, into none other than Senator Palpatine's vehicle. Palpatine is quite amiable and, um, expansive about the incident and, well, this story was written in response to the prompt: 'Obi-Wan wakes up in bed with an amorous stranger ...' The pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean is the one you'd think most likely to be in this story, and a penitent Obi-Wan reciting his own numerous sins isn't to be missed.

Why this must be read: Yet another James-on-the-Dutchman fic. Everyone seemed to be composing some variation on this theme, post-At World's End. Again, [livejournal.com profile] penknife's prose rises above the rest, as she captures James's voice *perfectly*:

James looked up at Will. He looked older than the last time James had seen him, and considerably more imposing. Of course, on that occasion, Will had been in the process of being hit over the head with an oar after repeatedly falling down, which might not have shown off his best qualities.
. . .
"Beckett?"

"He's dead. Davy Jones is dead, too. I'm the captain of the Dutchman. Elizabeth is the pirate king. Jack is ... Jack."

"And I'm dead," James said. "Wonderful."
. . .
She had, indeed, been the reason he had gotten himself killed. That and a sense that there wasn't any other option that he would actually enjoy more.
