2nd-Jun-2009 08:10 pm The Cigarettes by cosmic (PG)
I'm [livejournal.com profile] bessemerprocess and I'll be driving this month's Fake News RPF van right smack into Real News RPF. Yes, that's right, this month will be full of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert doing crazy things with (and to) Anderson Cooper, Keith Olbermann, and Rachel Maddow (and a few others as well).

Fandom: FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Gen
Length: oneshot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cosmic
Author Website: cosmic's fic tag
Why this must be read: This was my introduction to the PRT (Pundit Round Table), and it's quick snapshot of a group of friends who obviously care for each other sucked me into the fandom. Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Keith Olbermann welcome Anderson Cooper back home after the shooting of Planet In Peril.

Jon doesn't smoke the cigarettes Anderson gave him in that interview... )

31st-May-2009 03:44 pm "Let the Eagle Stray" by roadstergal (PG)
Fandom: FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Jon Stewart/"Stephen Colbert"
Length: 5,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] roadstergal
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

When Tad the building manager finds an oddly intelligent-looking dog, he doesn't really think much of it. Then his boss starts acting weird, and Mr. Stewart isn't quite acting normal, either ...

Let the Eagle Stray is one of the first fics I read in this fandom. It's light-hearted and cracky, and I think everyone should read it.

Vidder: Shishu1025
Musical artist: They Might Be Giants
Pairing: None
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shishu1025
Vidder's website: None/unknown
Why this vid kicks ass:

This is a vid about Tad, The Colbert Report's put-upon building manager. "Stephen" has got to be a terror to work for, and basically I don't think Tad gets enough love in this fandom. Enjoy!

24th-May-2009 01:07 pm "Coming Out" by roadstergal (PG-13)
Fandom: FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Sort of Jon Stewart/"Stephen Colbert"
Length: 912 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] roadstergal
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

It's National Coming Out Day and "Stephen", militantly in denial of his own orientation, is badgering (heterosexual) Jon to finally come out of the closet. This is a great example of "Stephen"!logic - i.e. pure crack!

18th-May-2009 12:31 pm "How Stephen Colbert Proved Jon Stewart Is a Lady" by sarken (PG-13)
Fandom: FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Jon Stewart/"Stephen Colbert"
Length: 5,100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sarken
Author Website: Manhattantrash, fic tag
Why this must be read:

Not only is How Stephen Colbert ... very well-written, funny, and just a little bit touching - it's incorporation of "Stephen" into the Pundit Round Table is broundbreaking within the Fake News fandom. That alone makes it worthy of reccing here at the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, but I chose it because the story makes me smile. "Stephen" is totally heterosexual, right? So if he's straight, any person he's attracted to must be a woman ... including Jon Stewart. Cue hilarity!

15th-May-2009 06:16 pm Fake News/Doctor Who (PG-13)
Title: Truthiness and Relative Dimensions in Space
Pairing: Overall Jon Stewart/"Stephen Colbert", various others
Length: approx. total 70,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah
Author Website: fic journal [livejournal.com profile] reseda_ptah; erinptah.com.
Why this must be read:

T.A.R.D.I.S. is actually a series of stories chronicling "Stephen Colbert"'s two stints as the Doctor's companion; once with the tenth Doctor and Jack when he was a teenager, and once with the fourth Doctor and Sarah-Jane Smith when he is an adult. It's a bit of an epic, and with a variety of surprise cameos and stealth crossovers, it's helluva fun to read.

Pairing: Jon Stewart/George Clooney, Jon Stewart/"Stephen Colbert"
Length: 3,467 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sarcasticsra
Author Website: fic journal [livejournal.com profile] scripted_sra
Why this must be read:

When George and Jon are outed by the tabloids, "Stephen" starts doing whatever he can to save Jon's soul, much to Jon's aggravation.

As serious as that summary may sound, this story is actually funny and endearing, and is a great example of how "Stephen"'s repression can play out in fic.

Fandom: FAKE NEWS
Pairing: God!Jon Stewart/Satan!"Stephen Colbert"
Length: 2500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] raaaaain
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

When [livejournal.com profile] fakenews_fanfic held a remix challenge last year, [livejournal.com profile] raaaaain decided to mix two stories together and ended up with Deus/satan (PG). It was recieved so well that [livejournal.com profile] raaaaain whipped up this sexy sequel, adding in a little D/s, a fair bit of blasphemy, and (coolest of all) The Wørd as Jesus. The Wørd as Jesus, you guys. It's witty and clever (and hot), so go have some fun and read it!

1st-May-2009 03:46 pm "Four Times Stephen Was Too Gay" by argyletheme (PG)
You may remember me from the last round of RPF - Fake News recs. This time around I'm reccing non-RPF Fake News, meaning that at least one character in these fics will be from the fictional Report 'verse where Stephen Colbert is a Republican blowhard, not a liberal-leaning comedian. Enjoy!

Fandom: FAKE NEWS
Pairing: "Stephen Colbert"/Tad the Building Manager
Length: 747 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] argyletheme
Author Website: Fic journal: [livejournal.com profile] colbernellodeux
Why this must be read:

In Four Times Stephen Was Too Gay, Bobby the Stage Manager becomes increasingly frustrated by his boss' unintentional homoerotic signals. As much as "Stephen" insists that he isn't gay, his actions are telling a whole different story and Bobby just doesn't know how to tell him. Funny and very fitting with the tone of the show, "Four Times Stephen Was Too Gay is a great example of fun, light-hearted character!fic.

30th-Nov-2008 07:08 pm "Take Me Away To Nowhere Plains" by canis_takahari and mackem (NC-17)
Here you go, my last rec of the month. I hope you enjoyed the ride as much as I did!

Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert
Length: 11,941 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] canis_takahari and [livejournal.com profile] mackem
Author Website: Their respective memories: canis_takahari's and mackem's.
Why this must be read:

When I'm in the mood for some fake news erotica, I look up one of the stories written by this pair. Although their work does not exclusively include kink, Take Me Away To Nowhere Plains is about a first-time D/s experience, and I haven't really been able to find another one-shot that can compare in that category. Enjoy!

28th-Nov-2008 05:33 pm VID REC: RPF - Fake News, "In The Beginning There Was The Word" by sailorptah
Vidder: [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah
Musical artist: David Phelps
Pairing: None
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah
Vidder's website: erinptah.com
Why this vid kicks ass:

Have you heard of Jonism? The official website is here, and once you've read that you'll have a better idea what [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah means when she describes this vid as, "... the illegitimate child of This Week In God and Even Stepvhen, raised from infancy in a convent of Jonist nuns."

This vid has mademe laugh every time I have watched it. It's just so well-executed! With the clever editing and the funny idea ... the part withthe Crisco cracks me up. She does warn for, um, blasphemy, however. So keep that in mind.

It is the FIFTH vid listed on this page.

Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: None
Length: 483 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cosmic
Author Website: Fic tag.
Why this must be read:

This is another piece of classic PRT fic. It's short and simple, but that's really part of the charm. In Tourniquet Play Jon, Stephen, Anderson, and Keith go out for lunch, but these guys can't just have a nice little meal together. Oh, no! Hilarity inevitably ensues. Not enough of an incentive? Well ... there's bondage, too. That good enough?

18th-Nov-2008 06:17 am "The First Time Rachel Maddow Slept With the PRT" by bessemerprocess (PG-15)
Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Mentions Keith Olbermann/Anderson Cooper
Length: 2483 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bessemerprocess
Author Website: Her fic tag.
Why this must be read:

The first weird thing this fandom did (well, the first one that's relevant to my explanation) was adopt Keith Olbermann and Anderson Cooper into what became known as the Pundit Round Table. There is no real reason why I should be reccing you Olbermann/Cooper fic during my Fake News month, and yet here they are.

The second weird thing this fandom did was to decide that, you know what? Rachel Maddow is awesome. She should be in the PRT too. The First Time ... is a great example of how fandom is incorporating a new 'character' into the fanon. And it's a great read, too.

Length: 3900 words

Why this must be read:

We Are Rome is a historical AU where Stephanus Colbertus is a Roman general and Jonathan is a slave. There is violence, sex, slavery (obviously), and a thought-out plot, combining together to create a thorough and enjoyable story. [livejournal.com profile] darkfaery1 is a self-described history geek, and her AUs are always a treat to read.

11th-Nov-2008 09:19 pm "The Thing With Feathers" by sailorptah (PG-13)
Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: "Stephen"/"Jon", eventually (heed the quotation marks)
Length: 28,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah
Author Website: erinptah.com, or her fic journal: [livejournal.com profile] reseda_ptah
Why this must be read:

I'm going to be completely up front and admit that [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah is one of my favourite people in this fandom. She is both a writer and an artist, and her meta is epic. However, [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah almost never dabbles in RPF. Her passion is "Stephen", the fictional persona Stephen Colbert portrays on The Colbert Report. Because of this, most of her fic is based in the show's fictional universe and doesn't technically qualify as RPF. That is why I am so happy to have The Thing With Feathers to rec this month.

In The Thing With Feathers Stephen Colbert wakes up and finds himself in a world where his character is a real flesh-and-blood person, with a whole bunch of problems. Meanwhile, "Stephen" is in the real world and things start to go badly immediately. Hence starts 17 chapters of awesomness. Enjoy! (Also, surprise ending is surprising - seriously.)

Why this must be read:

Well, to be honest, if you read fake news RPF you need to read [livejournal.com profile] smilesawakeyou. Her stories are known for their touch of crack, and To Serve Your Country is no exception. Jon makes the mistake of making an offer he never thought would be accepted ... until it is, to hilarious effect. This story will make you laugh, and maybe creep you out a bit. Enjoy!

8th-Nov-2008 12:37 pm "Glitter" by mrschucknoblet (PG)
Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: John Oliver/Demetri Martin
Length: 837 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mrschucknoblet
Author Website: Unknown. There are two fics archived at her journal and another at fakenews_fanfic.
Why this must be read:

I wanted to rec you guys something a little different this month and avoid focussing too much on all the Jon/Stephen goodies that inundate the fandom. It's not that I don't like Jon/Stephen or any of the other common pairings you find in fake news RPF (I do!), but I thought you might like a taste of the unusual. You don't mind, do you?

Glitter is a short and really adorable fic about Demetri mooning over everyone's favourite foreign correspondent, John Oliver. It's sweet and endearing, and that line about glitter will stick in my mind forever.

5th-Nov-2008 07:03 pm "Best Sport Ever" by nakannalee (NC-17)
Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Jon Stewart/Denis Leary
Length: 4000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nakannalee
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] nakannalee_fics
Why this must be read:

Best Sport Ever takes place during Jon's stand-up days, while he and Denis are touring together and before they made it big. We love looking back at the boys' pasts in this fandom, and this one is a good example of that. Plus, Jon/Denis fic is A) hot, and B) unfortunately rare. I thought you should get a taste.

Not only is this pairing terribly unrepresented, but the smut in this story is fantastic. There's a touch of non-con, but it is short lived. The rest is just unadulterated hotness. And there are wiffle balls (... and dildos).

3rd-Nov-2008 06:03 am "Improv 101" by stellar_dust (PG)
Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert 'close friendship' ;-)
Length: 2700
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust
Author Website: katycat.net
Why this must be read:

As you may or may not be aware, there was a writer's strike not too long ago. This meant that television shows were not being written, and some of the first ones directly effected were the late night programs. Oddly enough, this actually inspired an influx of stories in the fake news fandom as viewers of the shows started speculating on how the strike was effecting our favourite faux pundits ... and so you get lovely stories like [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust's Improv 101.

I chose this one in particular not just for the 'blatant fanservice' [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust warns for, not just because she is a lovely writer with too few stories in this fandom, but because of the creative medium she used. Have you ever read a link!fic? Well, get to it, then.

Hello! I'll be your driver this month for the second ever round of RPF - Fake News! If you haven't had the opportunity yet, please check out the wonderful fandom overview provided by [livejournal.com profile] sailtonorway.

Fandom: RPF - FAKE NEWS
Pairing: None explicitly, but expect a little UST.
Length: 2800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scrunchy
Author Website: Fake News: [livejournal.com profile] camera3; others can be found at her journal.
Why this must be read:

Quite simply, this is a prime example of PRT fic. If you aren't familiar with the genre, that stands for Pundit Round Table. The PRT includes Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann, and Anderson Cooper. They hang out, they snark at each other, they banter, and occasionally Keith and Anderson provide the reader with a little sexual tension to get them excited. [livejournal.com profile] scrunchy provides all this and more in This ... Is BNN, showing that she is one of the essential writers in this fandom.

Why this must be read:

This is my last rec of the month, and I'm reccing what is my favorite story in the Fake News RPF fandom ever. It's Stephen, Paul and Amy, the evolution of their relationships with each other and the little bits of history we get from interviews which Kyra turns into something natural and gorgeous.
