Title: Be My Voice In This World

Summary: In which Sir John of Fief Watson (aka Mad John) becomes Sir John of newly-created kind-of-a-Fief Baker Street and meets the demigod of insanity via divine intervention-slash-matchmakerness. Together they fight crime, and people explode!
Why this must be read: I love all the Tortall Series by Tamora Pierce but I don’t go out of my way to find fic set in or about her books. But when I do come across such fics that are crossed over with another of my fandoms it may make me squee a little, possibly, maybe. But this author takes some of the elements that make up the Tortall world and imagines a bit more and carves out their own part in it. It is fantastical and wonderful. I feel like you don’t have to know anything about the books (although they are wonderful!) to understand and enjoy the story. Try it, you won't regret it!

Author Website: Mab's fic on AO3
Why this must be read:

Full disclosure: I won this fic as part of the [ profile] help_haiti auction. But it scratches a curiosity itch I've had ever since seeing the 2009 Guy Ritchie movie (and getting back into the ACD canon): is Sherlock Holmes a Sentinel?

Certainly a case can be made for such in almost any incarnation, including canon. And Mab does a great job exploring this in this vignette of what might have happened had Blair Sandburg and Sherlock Holmes crossed paths during the Great Hiatus.

The Blair and Jim in the story come from another fantastic AU story by Mab, Strewn Towards A Heaven, which tells the story of Jim Ellison the Pinkerton agent and how he meets up with Blair Sandburg during the Johnstown, PA flood. You don't need to have read "Strewn" to enjoy "Notes", but it's so good that you should read it anyway.

Summary: On the second Thursday of March John Watson tumbled out of his bedroom window, and into the third Thursday of March.

Why this must be read: For the authors’ ‘casefic in reverse which is really a magical realism character study or is it actually a romance?’ approach. The whimsical idea done well makes an enjoyable read for John fans, because it's always fun when John knows something Sherlock doesn't, even if he is putting a calm mask on total confusion.

Why this must be read: Author shows just how well you can mix an original style and case into a fast paced short fic: the mystery of a playwright fearing assassination is deduced and resolved without Sherlock leaving the consulting room.  Best parts are how Sherlocks' observations are incorporated into the storytelling, plus the subtle laughs at pretentious artists.

Summary: "So," said John, feeling out of his depth once again. "An owl." It was the same mild, politely curious tone of voice with which he had previously found himself uttering such things as: "So – three bags of frozen AB negative," and "So – a selection of human ears."

"Goodness, John, with deductive prowess like that you'll soon be putting me in the shade," Sherlock said tartly. "Can't sneak anything past you, can we?"

Why this must be read: A really lovely example of  'getting to know the eccentric Holmes family' fics.  There's well executed characterization all around, with practical John caught between Luna’s baffling attempts at Muggle diplomacy, and Sherlock’s usual  avoidance and melodrama when faced with family. Relationship wise it's slightly romantic, with an original back story that helps explain Mycroft's overprotective big brother streak too. Just a great use of imagery and dialogue, makes the crossover seem natural even as John struggles with the bizzare.

Summary: Mixed up luggage and an undeclared exotic pet present a mystery even Douglas can't solve. Enter Sherlock Holmes.”

Why this must be read: A great example of a popular crossover. This crossover combo is popular thanks to a certain actor playing the leads in both series, although the characters are polar opposites in charisma, intellect and self- esteem. This fic exploits that contrast for comedy casefic value: Sherlock is on the case of an undeclared passenger on MJN Air, will this solve or worsen Cptn. Crieffs troubles?  Helps if you’ve heard the Cabin Pressure shows, to appreciate just how well the authors write in the audio drama screenplay format, capturing each characters voice and social quirks perfectly.  Holmes fans unfamiliar with the Cabin Pressure series can still enjoy it though, as casefic with a novel format and plot detours [especially if you have a peek at the CP fandom overview first!].  The deft use of banter is the best part of this fic imo, teasing out relationship dynamics between the two worlds in a way that highlights why each is so likable.

Why this must be read:
In a world dominated by an alien monarchy, criminals Sherlock Holmes and John Watson work to take down the royal establishment while detective James Moriarty and his associate Sebastian Moran try to track them down. Also featuring by Irene Adler and Roderick Maclean, who did in fact exist. AU based on Neil Gaiman's phenomenal short story "A Study in Emerald."

And I wanted to close out the month like I started- with a Study In Emerald-verse rec. While the consulting detective and his soldier look for clues to identify and stop the revolutionists, Sherry Vernet and The Limping Doctor (Holmes and Watson) raise hell and strike blows against the creeping horror that is the monarchy. Victorian era morality may apply.

15th-Jun-2013 11:13 am Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock BBC) / Pushing Daisies (PG-13)
Title: The Case of the Rolling Wheel and the Long Road by fresne
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Charlotte Charles/Ned
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
Ch1: The facts were these, when Sherlock Holmes was thirty years, four months, twenty-nine days, five hours and thirty-six minutes old, he fell over a waterfall. However, despite his considerable experience in the matter, he found that sometimes death has a grace period.
Ch2: In which there is some explanation as to what happens when the Blackbird sang - no noses removed
Ch3: Some notes
Ch4: In which there are further explanations as to why the denizens of the Pie Hole are in England. Plus adventure. Plus singing.

Victorian-era Holmes becomes modern day BBC-era Sherlock through Pushing Daisies magic. And history keeps repeating itself around Sherlock Holmes and he keeps finding replacements for the characters in his life. Partly, the cyclical nature of Sherlock finding his archetypes seems to be simply because the positions need to be be filled. (With various incarnations of Moriartys and Watsons- possibly from different Sherlock Holmes adaptions). Then, come to the modern day, and the bakers and detectives from the Pie Hole (along with their narrator) come to work with Sherlock for a case.

Why this must be read:
It was understood that regardless of what case Lestrade brought us in the meantime, when She sent her envoy, it would be my friend's new focus.

He slept feverishly that night, and I did not sleep at all. There were half thoughts, fringe memories of that flat mirrored lake and the slick of incomprehensible eldritch limbs against my skin. I gave up on sleep, made tea in the kitchen and doctored it with laudanum, serving the both of us. It made for a lazy morning the next day, and my back was quite poorly as I slept on the floor of his room.

So I wanted to start off this month by reccing an entire Sherlock Holmes universe a fic for of one of my favourite Sherlock Homes fic/short stories ever- Neil Gaiman’s A Study In Emerald which is Victorian era Homes set in a world where Lovecraft’s ancient Gods have returned to reclaim rule over the world. The short story is insane and brilliant and gives a slithery, creepy twist on the first Sherlock Holmes story, and creates an amazing Victorian period London universe to explore. Plus, the character twists in the story are brilliant.

What I am reccing is fic for that short story. (Definitely read it first if you haven’t!) I may be biased because this was one of the many amazing gifts I got for Yuletide last year, but it is fantastically written and works in the universe perfectly. Done in a gorgeous styled first person (imitating canon and Gaiman’s story), the consulting detective’s soldier recounts a horrifying case seeped in the eldritch taint of the Old Ones. Featuring some familiar faces and plenty of tentacles.

It is BAMF Doctor John rebuilding his life after the fall. He pretty much adopts an entire community. Why this must be read: Because this is one of the best Doctor Who crossovers with any version of Sherlock Holmes canon I have ever read. It takes the crossover premise and goes so far beyond it. It is like a season of Doctor Who with Holmes and Watson as companinons and it is incredible. Of course the Doctor and Holmes would hit it off, and of course Holmes would take his beloved Watson with him to the ends of the universe. The various interactions between Holmes, Watson, and the Doctor are rich, engaging, and beautiful. This is an epic adventure full of plot twists, humor, and romance.

Why this must be read: Because it brings together the two great loves of Sherlock Holmes: John Watson and the violin in a scorching hot way. Why this must be read: Young Sherlock is mysteriously ill. Mycroft's concern for his young brother leads to horrifying suspicions. "Proxy" offers a very plausible history for Mycroft's constant, obsessive concern towards his younger brother even when they are adults. Why this must be read: Arthur Conan Doyle wrote some famous books about a genius detective before the fic begins. Sherlock is a chemistry grad student. His brother owns a bar. John just returned from Afghanistan to study medicine. John calls Sherlock Forrest. Sherlock calls John Appleseed. Sherlock and John are typical students - sarcastic, potty-mouthed, living hand to mouth, smoking weed, and drinking.

He's a little stressed out, but he's got his priorities straight. Original characters and London as a war zone, and John's accidentally inventing a super genius.

Wee Doctor takes a cracky premise and turns it into something truly beautiful. John is such a tremendous BAMF in this story. John doesn’t let being turned into an eight year old stop him helping people and taking care of Sherlock. I really love the way americanjedi writes Sherlock and John’s relationship. You really feel these two are family. The OCs are wonderfully drawn and I find the great Holmes brothers attempts to puzzle out the mystery of doctor, soldier, badass eight year old John delightful. Why this must be read: Written for a prompt on the Sherlock fic meme where John is Sherlock and Mycroft’s nanny. It’s also somehow warped into a massive retelling of Hound of the Baskervilles. I love this verse so much. I know the premise sounds cracky but the storytelling is amazing.  I am not really a John/Lestrade shipper but John and Lestrade are very cute here.

The real heart of this story is the relationship that develops between John and 5 year old Sherlock and 12 year old Mycroft.  Even if you don't like kidfic give this story a chance.  The kids in question are Sherlock and Mycroft after all and they are both perfectly themselves, just as kids. The 1st sequel is a day in the life of this odd, adorable little family just before Christmas. The other fic sequels are mostly John/Lestrade interludes.

The most unique parts of this epic verse are the two blog run by “John” Nothing Happens to Me and “Lestrade”Interesting murders not boring stuff. These blogs are fabulous and much better written than the blogs put out by the BBC.  They are interactive fan fic chronicling the lives of John, Lestrade, and the boys. They are so much fun to read.  The conversations in the comments are usually a blast.   I really can not recommend this verse highly enough.

Why this must be read:
This story is completely delightful! It's not really a crossover, per se, but a fusion of LotR and ACD. Frodo Baggins is our stand-in for Sherlock Holmes, smoking pipeweed and solving the mysteries that come his way in the Shire from his home base of 221B Bag End. Samwise Gamgee, a healer by trade, is his faithful companion in his adventures, and student detective. I am in awe of how well this author preserves the feel of both canons and combines them into this perfect fusion. All the Hobbits are completely Hobbitish, with lush descriptions and characterizations that fill my mind with images of Hobbiton, while at the same time ACD's characterization of Holmes sneaks through into Baggins's actions and Gamgee has absorbed Watson's voice.

This is a lovely little story which starts of a larger series of stories that are all fabulous. Go read and enjoy!

Why this must be read:

This gem is from the early days of the Sherlock BBC kink meme. The Kink Meme prompt was: Sherlock knows he's a difficult roommate; he also knows he's a difficult boyfriend and difficult boyfriends run a high risk of being dumped. He can't stop John from leaving him, but he can make it harder for other people to steal him away.
I'd like to see paranoid, panicky, possessive Sherlock doing his best to stamp a virtual MINE sign on John: hickeys, wearing John's jumpers, having him wear Sherlock's scarf, buying matching watches/rings/bracelets, significant touching...

Sherlock knows relationships end.  It's what they do.  He is determined that his and John's relationship won't.  Possessive Sherlock is one of my biggest kinks. On the Necessity of Endings is a lovely, slightly dark character study of him and his John obsession.  I adore Sherlock's checklist of the 5 main ways relationships end and the methodical and the just a bit not good way he deals with each of them. One of my all time favs.
