Pairing: James T. Kirk/Spock
Length: 13,709 words
Author on LJ: [ profile] rhaegal
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:
Admiral James T. Kirk is desperately in love with Spock, and has been for many years. This story is set after the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, so we have a Spock newly in touch with his emotions after trying to purge them for so long through the Kolinahr and a Kirk who has been burned too often by his own feelings and who is unwilling to pick up on Spock's signals that he's finally ready for a real relationship with his friend.

I like this story a lot because the characterizations feel very real and in-line with the way the actors portrayed them in a way that fanfic often doesn't. Spock must slowly woo a reluctant Kirk. And they actually (GASP) talk about their relationship! Lovely.

Pairing: Spock/Leonard McCoy, Spock/Alternate Leonard McCoy, Alternate Spock/Alternate Nyota Uhura
Length: 20,355 words
Author on LJ: (unknown)
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:
Because this fic gets that the universes are DIFFERENT. Just because the original Spock never had a romantic relationship with Nyota doesn't mean that the alternate relationship is doomed to failure. And just because Spock loved his own Leonard McCoy doesn't make it true in this bold new universe. Except perhaps it does...

I like that this story focused a lot on Spock and his reaction to seeing the Vulcan of the universe he finds himself destroyed, his relationship to Sarek, and his ambivalence towards the alternates of his best friends, Jim Kirk and Leonard McCoy. I also like the focus on McCoy, too. Good reading, this!

Pairing: Spock/Jim Kirk
Length: 11,318 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: on AO3
Why this must be read:
I am a sucker for fusions with the concept of daemons from His Dark Materials. In this universe, humans have daemons while Vulcans have katras. However, Spock, as a Human/Vulcan hybrid, has neither... and is thus without a soul, making his life. Well. Unpleasant. Jim Kirk, on the other hand, has the distinction of being born with TWO daemons. I think you can see where the author is going with this, but it is very well written and the premise is interesting and original. The bits about Tarsus were especially interesting to read.

Summary: 14 year old Jimmy Kirk must fight against the forces of Kodos the Executioner!

Why this must be read: This fic is 100% my headcannon for the events on Tarsus IV, which is brought up in the TOS episode The Conscience of the King. It's an action story, an adventure, a teen-aged romance, and a great sci-fi story for anyone reading, regardless of previous TOS cannon knowledge. It explains a lot about the Jim Kirk we meet later on in his life, and I highly recommend it to anyone, regardless of their taste in Star Trek.

Why this must be read:

With my now-known love of presumed-dead fics, what do you think one featuring actual death does to me? Yes, it gets my hurt/comfort bell ringing. This is not, however, a typical “deathfic,” at least not the way I define it, because, well, the dead person is brought back to life for starters, and the story goes on to not only fix that, but fix a few other things in Star Trek canon that were in need of it!

Long rec is long… )

Why this must be read:

The characterization. For having amazingly in character voices that it feels like an extension of TOS.

The fic deals with the aftermath of the TOS episode "Plato's Stepchildren". It's an excellent, introspective and perhaps a bit haunting character study and a first time story from Kirk's POV. Like the author, I also remember being unsettled when I watched this episode and the implications of what happened in the episode forms the crux of this story. The author captures Kirk's voice showing both his emotional intelligence as well as his all too human flaws. And Spock is characterized perfectly as are the other characters (Bones, Uhura, Chapel and even Alexander). I loved the fact that Kirk knew he was being selfish, of Spock's shame and anger at having his control taken, the way the repercussions were dealt with, the tender breaking down of barriers between Kirk and Spock, and the nuanced details. Well-written, well-paced and definitely worth checking out. Highly rec'd!

Pairing: Scotty/Uhura, Spock
Length: 1555
Author on LJ: [ profile] thistlerose
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

One of the things that I love about Star Trek is that while we do get to see the characters at their prime going on deep space missions and being heroic and diplomatic across the galaxy, we also get to see some of the characters' waning years as well. The notable example being Ambassador Spock.  This piece takes place after Bones' funeral where Scotty, who was stuck 75 years in a transporter buffer, runs into Spock.  It's bittersweet and heartbreaking and [ profile] thistlerose does a wonderful job of capturing Scotty's and Spock's voices. The grief is palpable and Scotty's love for Uhura shines through.  The sublte details about the scenary, Scotty's inner thoughts and observations of Spock are all a lovely touch.  The fic is somewhat episode related so having knowledge of the TNG episode "Relics" is great but not required.

Pairing: Gen
Length: ~18,000
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: UKJess's Omnium-Gatherum
Why this must be read:

For her Kirk voice.  He is an extension of who he is in The Original Series.  Very few people are able to navigate between the various contradictions that is Captain James T. Kirk, and UKJess really captures his voice.  She manages to discuss and highlight his insecurity, arrogance, bravado, and even his empathy and intelligence all within this story.  It simply is an amazing character study.  The reactions of the various members of his crew as well such as Bones, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, etc also feel very in character.  I almost felt as if I was watching a TOS episode.  I also really liked how the tension was built up and finally how the resolution came about in the end.  Almost as if something was broken and put back together but yet was not quite the same.  Just lovely!

The basic summary of the story is Kirk, Bones, Spock and some members of his crew get taken hostage by a enemy empathic species.  And Kirk starts to break apart in front of his crew.  How the crew deals and reacts is the basis of the story.

Hi [ profile] crack_van! Sorry I'm a bit late! I'm [ profile] unbidden_truth and I'll be steering the Trek van for the month. I read mostly TOS and Reboot fics (gen or otherwise) so expect a variety of stories. The first fic I want to rec is an amazing short Pike/Number One story from the old TOS kink thread.

Why this must be read:

Short, intense, and set in Mirror!verse, this little fic packs a punch. It's about Pike and Number One and what they were...what they could have been shown through the lens of the Mirror!verse we saw in TOS but tempered with feelings of sorrow, loyalty, and love. Note that Mirror!verse warnings apply, so tread carefully.

Why this must be read:

A transporter accident (it’s always a transporter accident) switches original series McCoy with reboot movie McCoy with all the differences in appearance that implies to us.  Kirk and Spock insist the new McCoy is an impostor and don’t trust him until Spock Prime backs up his story.  Despite being set in the reboot verse the story is mostly about the relationship between Spock and McCoy in the original series/time line.

Why this must be read:

Requiem for Methuselah is not one of my favorite TOS episodes, mostly because Kirk's responses just don't make all that much sense to me.

This story does rely on a Kirk/Spock interpretation of canon, but using that interpretation, it makes the episode make so much more sense to me. The story does go AU in the middle, but the first part -- ever since I read this story, the first part has become part of my personal headcanon, it just makes so much sense to me.

But even without that, it's a good story, and Abraxis stays true to the episode's themes throughout. McCoy in the episode talks about the things that love will drive a man to do, and we see that throughout this fic -- and it doesn't even have to be romantic love, because the love between best friends McCoy and Kirk is just as palpable.

This story is very much about the agonies and the ecstasies of love, and feels so true to character for Kirk, Spock, and McCoy that I honestly do believe some of this is what was going on behind the scenes in TOS.

Pairing: Sarek/Amanda
Length: 10,800

Why this must be read:

There are a lot of fics that gloss over what goes on with T'Pring in Amok Time. Specifically, they gloss over that she was only allowed to divorce Spock by challenge, and that T'Pau asked her if she was prepared to become the property of the victor. Many fanfic writers like to explain those statements away, and say they're not really what's going on.

This story is not about T'Pring, but it is about a society where those really are T'Pring's options. The idea of women being the property of their husbands, and unable to request divorce for themselves -- these are concepts that modern women tend to reject. Many writers have difficulty imagining a society as advanced as the Vulcans having such, to us, outdated principles.

One of the great things about this story, though, is that Amanda struggles with it just as much. I struggled with those ideas in Amok Time as well, and then I read this fic and my view was transformed. Amanda's struggles were my struggles, and then I saw how she came to the conclusion she did, and understood how she made it.

This fic takes difficult, challenging concepts, and makes them make sense for the people they involve. It also shows how pon farr really can shape an entire society.

Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Length: 26k
Author on LJ: [ profile] aldora89
Author Website: Master list on LJ
Why this must be read:

Trelane of The Squire of Gothos fame is a character a lot of people skip over, or dismiss as one of the several near-omnipotents that Kirk deals with. [ profile] aldora89 brings him back in a tale that is equal parts funny, sweet, dramatic, smart, hot, and loving. The entire crew is marvelously in character -- I love Uhura's part in this, and Sulu is great as well.

Where the fic shines, though, is with Kirk and Spock, who feel so utterly like the Kirk and Spock I saw on screen. Spock, in particular, is a treat with his unashamed snark in interacting with Trelane. And I always get a kick out of Trelane, who gets some of the best lines, and who has a tiny twist at the end that's a reward for fans of the Star Trek series beyond TOS.

This fic combines combines plot, character, and sex for a story that's just utterly fun.

Title: “On the Edge of Forever” by DawnC and “A Matter of Time” by JudyL (sequel)
Pairing: none
Length: “Edge”: Novel length, “Matter”: 8K
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: DawnC’s Blair Angst Fiction Page and DawnC at Brothers In Arms
Author Website: JudyL at AO3 and Judy’s home page

Why this must be read: I like both of these shows, and the authors manage to do justice to the characters of both fandoms.

It’s not easy to do a good crossover. Too often the author is more versed in one fandom to the detriment of the other. There’s also problems with the setup – how did the characters from one show end up in the city/state/universe of the other. When you throw a time span of centuries into the mix, you *really* have a challenge. DawnC does this very well while staying within canon for both shows.

On his way home from the university, Blair interrupts an apparent assault of a woman. He is then attacked and thus starts an odyssey that takes him, literally, across time and space. As Jim tries desperately to find him, he comes across a trio of men who have some answers. It seems that the baddies have gone back in time to significantly alter Earth’s history, and it will take the best of both fandoms to stop them.

DawnC tells a good interesting story, taking advantage of the natural banter and relationships among the various characters to keep you engaged. She’s not above poking a little fun at canon -- the ridiculously short skirts of the Enterprise females, Chekov’s cheesy accent and the Red Shirt trope – and we get to smirk along with her.

JudyL’s sequel brings the Enterprise gang back a few years later Cascade time, but Kirk and company are decades older. Once again, they have to foil a plot to change Earth history. Although this time Blair and Jim are not the target, someone close to them is.

Why this vid kicks ass:

One of the things that surprised me first time I watched the reboot of Star Trek was the deep heartache I felt for Spock Prime. Not only was he alone in the Prime universe (everyone I know, goes away in the end) but he failed in his mission and planets/countless lives were destroyed. (I will let you down, I will make you hurt.)

This vid also utilizes clips from TOS to great effect (I remember everything, what have I become? my sweetest friend) while tying back in with reboot Spock (and you could have it all, my empire of dirt.) This vid is simple - and I mean than in only the best possible way. It perfectly captures that heartache by letting the song and images - and not complicated/flashy editing - tell the story.

Why this must be read:

The majority of Garak/Bashir fics portray Garak as the dominant partner, while Bashir is cast as the inexperienced newcomer to hot man-on-man action. The First Time reverses these roles, and creates a very different yet utterly believable version of this pairing. Olivia Monteith also captures all of the overwhelming emotions and physical sensations of a 'first time', and balances them with gentle humour and witty dialogue. The result is a poignant and sexy tale of two very different cultures, species and men colliding behind closed doors.

Why this must be read:

Star Trek fandom existed for decades before the internet, and in fact the Star Trek fanzines shaped fannish internet culture from the very beginning. (Did you know the term "slash" comes from the old original-series fanzines?) Sadly, most of the wonderful stories of this era are no longer available, the fanzines they were collected in being long out of print and most having never made it online. I would be remiss if I didn't rec at least one of those gems that still survive.

After Image, first published in 1980 in Odyssey #4 is an episode tag for "Mirror, Mirror," the one where they get switched to an alternate universe where Spock has a beard and everyone's evil. They get home safely in the end and Enterprise goes on its way. Ingrid explores some of the lingering effects of their stay in the evil-twin universe.

Pairing: Spock, Uhura, Saavik
Length: 88.8k
Author on LJ: none known
Author Website: Wildcat's Trek Fic
Why this must be read:

Saavik doesn't get enough love. According to the book The Pandora Principle (and to the best of my knowledge not superseded by anything), Saavik was not only Spock's protege, she was an orphan that he took a few years off from his Starfleet career to raise until she was ready to be placed in a public school living with a normal family (although he still remained her guardian).

The idea of Spock trying to raise a young, rambunctious, girl by himself is pretty hilarious when you think about it. Wildcat thinks so too, and so does Uhura--which is why, in this story, Uhura joins Spock and Saavik on Dantria for a while to provide a woman's touch and a female role-model for young Saavik, as well as give Spock with some much-needed backup. This story has humor and wit, and genuine emotion. The characters are deftly handled and true to themselves. It is the first in a series, but can be read on its own; I would highly recommend the whole series. One of the later stories in the series, The Other Woman, was recced five years ago.

Why this must be read:

Okay, I admit it, I have a thing for Vulcans. I generally tend to go for aliens that are different enough (biologically and culturally) to be, well, alien, and yet still like us enough that we can understand and emphasize with them. Vulcans fit the bill to a T, and Saidicam29 does a good job of exploring this in a well-thought-out AU.

For Vulcans, family and lineage are all-important, and the basis for much of their culture. Star Trek tends to take it for granted that they are compatible (biologically and culturally) with humans, which is rather incredible if you think about it. (Green copper-based blood! Suppressing emotion!) Saidicam asks the question: what if it wasn't so easy? What if Sarek and Amanda, trying to live a traditional Vulcan life, couldn't have kids together? What if fundamental cultural differences led to fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of their relationship? What if they got divorced? Where do they go from there? Add in new relationships for both of them and the complications of an unexpected Pon Farr, and you've got the makings of a good, angsty story.
