29th-Nov-2013 08:40 pm The Coffee Bandits of Greater Manhattan by daroos (Teen)
Whoops! After a bit too long away (thanks to holidays and a really shitty memory), I am back with another rec! And will be doing my best to make up for lost time today and tomorrow.

Fandom: MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
Pairing: Clint & Natasha, Clint/Coulson
Length: 40k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daroos
Author Website: [archiveofourown.org profile] daroos
Why this must be read: If you've been following my recs this month, you will have noticed that I like coffee shop/restaurant AUs. I have absolutely no shame about this, because I think that the best ones take the essence of the characters, distill them down to the best bits, and then make them better. (And then add food porn.)

This fic is one of the absolute BEST aus for that. It's mostly about Clint, and Clint & Natasha, and how they run their unlicensed coffee truck in New York while building a small family, and then fighting (and later definitely not fighting *wink*) "the man" in the form of NYC Dept of Health inspector Phil Coulson. Basically, it's team!fic with food and coffee and a liiiittle bit of a mystery in the form of some comic!Hawkeye nods. (Bro.)

They had been at it for eight months, through the smothering heat of summer and the deep snows of winter. It was their first spring, each day dawning with more promise and beauty than the last, and Clint was excited to roll out their mixed hot/cold menu for the thirsting crowds. They had been so busy (and so successful) that the little matter of a food truck permit and food safety inspections had never been given their proper weight. They hadn’t been in operation three months, zipping around the city and dispensing caffeine to the ravening masses, when an unassuming man in a suit had sidled up to them in the financial district asking about their letter grade.

Clint had gotten out of the truck to talk with the stuffed suit while Natasha surreptitiously closed up shop. In a coordinated move which couldn’t have been better if they’d practiced, Natasha backed down Stone Street three blocks going the wrong direction at almost forty and zipped out of sight while Clint had made a break for it through a fake Irish pub and into the mid-day crowds of tourists around Wall Street. Since then they had been wanted by the city food inspectors - caffeinated fugitives from the law.

16th-Nov-2013 11:33 pm Welcome to Night Vale/Marvel Cinematic Universe, by sabinelagrande (PG)
Title: The Job Fair
Pairing: Clint “Hawkeye” Barton/Agent Phil Coulson, Cecil/Carlos
Length: 5,337 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Dreamwidth blog; works on AO3
Notes: Set after Thor and before The Avengers. Spoilers for “The Whispering Forest,” “Eternal Scouts,” and “One Year Later.”
Why this must be read:

Whoops! Sorry I’m late with my crossover recs. Hopefully I can compensate for my tardiness with quality and quantity.

First up is one of the fics responsible for sucking me into the Night Vale fandom. Like Clint, I didn’t know what I was getting into when he and Agent Coulson paid an unplanned visit to the latter’s hometown, a friendly desert community...

It was, indeed, a sewing room, not that Clint had much expertise with sewing rooms. The walls clearly hadn't been redecorated, though. A big Captain America poster hung beside the outside window, partially obscured now by the dressmaker's dummy. There were photos on the wall, and Phil's mother stepped over, beckoning Clint over and pointing to them.

"This is Phil when he first started Boy Scouts," she said, pointing to a picture of a serious-looking young boy who couldn't be anybody else. "Here's Phil and his junior prom date- shame about the dance, but they were good enough to take back his tux even with the scorch marks. Here he is with his cousin Emily- oh, and this one is from when Phil was in the Boys Brigade of the Sheriff's Secret Police," Mrs. Coulson said, brimming with pride. "Doesn't he look so precious in his little cape and his balaclava?"

"Mom," Phil muttered, embarrassed.

It was at that very moment that Clint realized that none of this was a joke. This was not Phil's tour de force performance; this was not the best-executed prank in the history of all time. This was simply where Phil came from, and it was terrifying.

Sabine does a fantastic job of integrating Night Vale with the Marvel ’verse, keeping everyone in character while giving enough background (including details borrowed from the comics) and local color that even someone unfamiliar with either canon can relate to the characters, marvel at the setting, and enjoy the story.

Why this must be read: So, apparently, in addition to alternate universes, I'll also be inundating you with food porn this month. I would apologize, except I'm not sorry, not even a little.

This story is a non-powered-slash-modern bakery AU, and it's lovely. It's tagged "therapeutic breadmaking," and that's basically what it is. There are so many wonderful things about this story that I can't list them all (and wouldn't want to deprive you of the joys of finding them on your own), but suffice it to say, this is exactly how I picture Steve and Bucky if the war they'd fought was in Afghanistan instead of western Europe. In addition, there is a lovely teamfic feel and glorious little nods to canon, all written in Vic's always beautiful prose.

6th-Nov-2013 03:36 pm Feed the Body, Nourish the Soul by copperbadge & blackglass (Teen)
Hello friends! I'm Kari aka meinterrupted aka Shinykari, and I'm piloting the Helicarrier this month. It's going to be a big one for the Avengers fandom: Thor 2 releases in the US on 8 November, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD on ABC is going strong (and might possibly tie into Thor 2? Maybe?!?!), and the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer is still fresh in our minds (and broken, broken hearts).

As for me, I'm the captain of a veritable armada of ships, with a soft spot for Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Darcy Lewis, Clint Barton: Avenging Idiot, and teamfic. This month I'm planning on pointing out some of the amazing alternate universe and crossover fic in this fandom. With a cast as large and diverse as the MCU, AUs & crossovers come with the territory, and we've had some really, really great ones. So, without further adieu, I give you the first rec of many!

Fandom: MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
Pairing: Gen
Length: Podfic: 30-45min / Fic: 6500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] super_tricie341 / [personal profile] sam_storyteller
Author Website: [archiveofourown.org profile] blackglass / [personal profile] sam_storyteller
Why this must be read: If you've been in pretty much any fandom for any length of time, you've probably heard of Sam Storyteller aka copperbadge. His fic is popular for a reason: it's well-written; he has a gift for getting characters' voices down, even in an AU setting; and he's funny. All of these traits are in full force in Feed the Body, Nourish the Soul, which is equal parts bantery teamfic and food porn. The in-jokes and meta nods to canon are brilliant (Bruce? He's a sweet man. Except when he's cooking. You wouldn't like him when he's cooking.) without being too overwhelming.

What I really want to highlight, though, is blackglass's podfic of the story. The way she reads really brings the story to life in a way the words on a screen can't. Though she doesn't "do" the voices like some podficcers (which can get a little annoying to me, depending on the fandom and story), it's very clear who's speaking at all times. Plus, her voice is very pretty and soothing, which is always nice in podfic!

Well, it's that time again - the Helicarrier is coming in for a landing to refuel and have some maintenance and a crew change. I've had a blast reccing this month, and I hope y'all have found some great new stories to read. Happy Halloween!

Fandom: THE AVENGERS (MOVIEVERSE)
Pairing: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Length: 3,671
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81
Author Website: LJ or AO3
Why this must be read:

This story has so many things going for it I'm not sure where to begin. Anuna paints emotions with words in a way that gives the story a real presence. The story is set in her home country of Croatia, and she manages to highlight cities and landscapes to better illuminate where both characters are on their own inner landscape. Natasha's conscious choices about what to bring and where to go, the way that she methodically does everything she's learned from her own experience to try and help Clint through his ordeal with Loki is brilliant. She does the same thing with music and Natasha's experience of it. The character introspection is effortless but spot on, it's quiet, but the narrative voice is one of the best Natasha's I've run across.

31st-Oct-2013 12:05 am Small Acts (series) by Bob5, Workerbee73, Inkvoices, and SugarFey (Explicit)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS (MOVIEVERSE)
Pairing: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Length: 17,336
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bob5fic, [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73, [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices, [livejournal.com profile] sugarfey
Author Website: Bob5 (AO3), Workerbee73 (AO3), Inkvoices (AO3), and SugarFey (AO3)
Why this must be read:

We get very little in the way of backstory for the movieverse versions of Clint Barton and Natasha Romanov in canon. Their backgrounds are blank slates with shadows leftover from the comics canon to be used as rough sign posts, and many authors have written stories trying to fill that in, and subsequently, "how they met" stories are incredibly prolific in the Clint/Natasha category.

Here, Bob5 and Workerbee73 begin there, and (with guest authors Inkvoices and SugarFey) craft a sweeping but intimate and darkly beautiful history between the two master assassins that is sparse, raw, and poetic by turns. It's not for the faint of heart - assassins after all are rarely nice or stable people. These are slightly darker versions of the characters than we see in the film; they're both rife with jagged edges and raw, easily opened wounds. Their relationship is equally dark and almost fragile, and based on subtle power exchange and at times an almost (if not outright) religious devotion.

One of the best parts of this particular series is how much meta and analysis is recorded alongside it - most of the series has a lot of commentary and conversation to be had in the comments. For that reason, if meta is a thing that interests you, I highly recommend reading the LiveJournal version of the story and check out the additional links in the master post.

And as always, if you like it, please take a moment to let the authors know. You'll absolutely make their day.

Chez_Amanda: AO3

Why this must be read:

Laid Bare was one of the very first Clint/Natasha fics that I ran across, and was part of what got me well and truly into 'shipping them, both romantically and as partners. It's straight-up pre-Avengers mission-fic, and delves into the two of them navigating not only their undercover assignment, but also their relationship. Even though they're already a couple here, the sexual tension between the two of them is scorching, and underlies some solid characterization and character development.

Why this must be read:

Darcy/Steve is a fairly popular 'ship, as is Steve/Bucky, but Darcy/Bucky is much rarer and well-executed examples of it like this one shouldn't be missed. I love a lot of things about this story, from Darcy's overall point of view to her friendship with JARVIS, but the real highlight is the warm, sexy, flirtatious relationship she has with Bucky as they conspire to try and seduce Steve.

21st-Oct-2013 11:08 pm Before the Storm, There is Peace by scifigrl47 (G)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS (MOVIEVERSE)
Pairing: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Length: 1099
Author on LJ: Unknown (there is a matching screen name, but nothing Avengers-related there or anything to connect them)
Author Website: Tumblr or AO3
Why this must be read:

This fic must be read because, well, it's scifigrl47, and I'm of the opinion all her fic is in the "must be read" pile. Most of it has been recced already, with good reason. She builds the best "team as family" world I've ever run into, has a deft hand with original characters (and bots!), and can bring the funny on the same page that she breaks your heart wide open.

I was thrilled to find out that this fic in particular hadn't been recced, since I wanted to highlight some of the best Clint/Natasha fic this month. "Before the Storm, There is Peace" captures (in just a relatively few words) some of the most quintessential elements that make Clint and Natasha's relationship so compelling - whether they're written as lovers, exes, "just partners", or soul mates (romantic or otherwise) Here they fill in each other's spaces and guard one anothers' backs. Here they bicker in the way that only those of long acquaintance do, are blindingly tender at one turn and then slip away from one another the next. In particular she's taking a look at them preparing for the Battle of New York (written before the movie aired, so there's a fair amount of guesstimation) but it could be before any moment of truth in any number of dangerous "we probably won't survive" sort of circumstances.

Length: 12,625

Why this must be read:

Because it's Peggy - after the war and still being awesome, and because it's full of little moments that give you the shivers and maybe some tears (good tears, nostalgic tears, not crushing ones). It's a simple little love story in not-so-simple surroundings, with equally simple moments that in turn are the ones that have the most profound impacts. The characters are spot-on here - their voices are right and you can see it play out in your mind. Copperbadge is one of those authors that makes you see, feel, and hear the story without hitting you over the head with it. And because it's the story of Peggy, and Gabe, and SHIELD as they are begun and as they grow.

Fandom: THE AVENGERS (MOVIEVERSE)
Pairing: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Length: 5407 and 6936 respectively
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] allisnow
Author Website: LJ or AO3
Why this must be read:

I read this fic early on in my forays into Avengers fandom, and it's always stuck with me. Clint and Natasha are both written very believably here - lost and emotionally raw following Loki's manipulations and the aftermath of the movie. Natasha knows something is wrong with Clint, though she doesn't guess what it is (at least not correctly) right away. Clint is fighting for his sanity, Natasha is fighting for their partnership, and [livejournal.com profile] allisnow weaves the stories through their two opposing points of view.

"An Arrow, Discarded" is a chilling look at what Loki put in Clint's head, images and desires that he can't escape as easily as he did the overt control Loki had over him, because once things are thought and felt, they can't ever entirely be undone. Natasha, meanwhile (in "Out is Through") is struggling to deal with an experience that was truly hers - not something that happened to a persona or a cover she could easily discard or file away in the recesses of her mind. At the same time that she's trying to regain her footing, she can tell that Clint is slipping away from her and sabotaging their partnership, but she doesn't know why. (Or how to fix it.)

The language is beautiful and emotionally descriptive, those emotions are raw and intense, and the connection between the two of them is deep but fragile, and she shows how they rebuild both themselves and each other through that connection.

Please read and heed the author's warnings - there's some pretty heavy stuff here. To those, I would also add that she includes some very vivid (and accurate) depictions of anxiety and panic attacks.

Length: 16,699
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rainbowrites
Author Website: LJ or AO3
Why this must be read:

There are quite a few Avengers/His Dark Materials fusions, but few have done such a unique and fantastic job of matching up the Avengers with Daemons as [livejournal.com profile] rainbowrites does here. The depictions of Natasha's experiences with her Daemon are chilling, while Clint and Loquis just make sense. The story goes farther than just experimenting with Daemons though and stretches from the nightmares of the Red Room to the joyful absurdity of pranks in the Tower with equal skill. I particularly love the handle she has on Steve, both how he acts and how other people react to him. The story is peppered through with brief little insights that blow each of the characters wide open and expose who they are inside just as surely as their Daemons do. It's hysterical and heartbreaking and heartwarming and hot, which is always (to me) the mark of an incredibly good fic.

Pairing: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov/Steve Rogers, Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Length: 5130
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bebunny
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

This fic is both a very hot and a little bit sweet (not cloyingly so) look at the ever-popular theme of Steve trying to adjust to life (and intimacy) in the 21st century. I love it because it highlights the established relationship between Clint and Natasha and how well they're in sync with one another, and deals with Steve's uncertainties about sex in the modern world rather than just painting him as prudish and disapproving. The movie-verse Steve Rogers is still young, still awkward around women in regards to dating, and now has to deal with being a world-wide celebrity and superhero on top of that. As [livejournal.com profile] bebunny says in the fic "performance anxiety doesn't begin to cover it". On the flipside, Clint and Natasha are shown as down to earth and forthright about their sexuality, and perfectly willing to share that with Steve in order to help him out.

It's the first part of a longer series that continues to show how their relationship develops and grows, and all the stories in it are worth a read.

$10 Says You're Wrong
Author's Summary: When Tony plays a prank on Steve it's only meant to get a rise out of him, however it only serves to throw into light just how out of place Steve feels. Natasha is the one to see it for what it really is, but is there anything she and Clint can do to help?

Why this must be read:

It's a sign of a really good writer and a good story, when they can get you to enjoy and rave to all your friends about a scenario or pairing that generally doesn't appeal to you - and [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch's fic has done that to me twice now. In this instance, I didn't have to be sold on the idea of Clint/Natasha, but the body swap trope isn't usually one of my go-tos. Many body swap fics end up going for the quick laugh over characterization, but not this one. It's not dark or angsty, but it's thoughtful at times and does have some depth and subtlety to the characters that's fantastic. [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch has a wonderful knack for witty dialogue and she also incorporates all sorts of little details about what it might be like to switch bodies that really make the story stand out.

It is Clint/Natasha, but their relationship is already established long before any body-swapping occurs, and the sexual component is just one part of the chord of notes that makes up that relationship. Yes, they have the obligatory "how the other half lives" experience of changing with someone of the opposite sex, but they also have new realizations about one another's experiences and views as working partners and friends. All-in-all, it's a solid, really enjoyable story that shouldn't be missed.

Why this must be read:

I'm going to dive straight in with one of my favorite authors, [livejournal.com profile] icarus_chained. It was extremely difficult to pick one fic to highlight (and if you like this one, you definitely want to check out the rest of her fic, trust me) -- but I finally settled on "Howl" because it not only features my favorite character, but because it showcases all the reasons why I like her writing so much. She excels at drawing comparisons between characters that aren't immediately evident (but seem incredibly true and obvious once revealed), and her work is often fluid and almost poetic.

"Howl" is a point-of-view peice of Natasha Romanov immediately following the Battle of New York, as she is still caught up in that experience. Natasha as a character is all about debts, and red, power, and freedom, all of which are felt here. She resonates with each and every other Avenger in a unique and powerful way, and I'm a complete goner for stories that expound on that. "Howl" feels like all those possibilities in microcosm - it's short, but powerful. It has a mythic quality to it that I love and it's easy to let the language sweep you up and away into the kind of dizzying adrenaline rush that comes from the heat of battle. Particularly a battle with people who come together to make a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.

Why this must be read:
I picked this story, with a favorite pairing, in honor of the upcoming premiere of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tomorrow(!!). This is a spin on the "dosed with a truth drug/spell/etc." plot. In this story, Agent Coulson (along with many other agents, gets exposed to an experimental substance that removes emotional inhibitions. He goes to Clint for a safe refuge, and the (non-melodramatically handled) hurt/comfort abounds, for those who like that. I don't usually, and this was just right.

Fandom: Avengers Movieverse
Pairing: Loki Laufeyson/Tony Stark (sort-of maybe) friendship
Length: 14,260 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] asidian
Author Website: Author Page on AO3/Manga published by Tokyopop: Mark of the Succubus
Why this must be read:
This gen story is centered on Tony and Loki and the snark-filled path to their mutual, albeit tentative, respect for one another. It's complete, although I'd love to read more in this 'verse.

Why this must be read:
Tagged "Zombies" and "Crack Treated Seriously" (which seems not possible, but somehow works out), this story is one of my gen recs, and people who do not like zombies should still give it a read due to the amusingly wacky plot (and for reasons I won't give so as not to spoil the ending).

Another gen rec, this character study of a Steve trying to make a life in the 21st century is just like Steve, full of sweetness and courage.

Why this must be read:
As a general rule, Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics are not my thing, but this story handles the power dynamics matter-of-factly rather than fetishistically (not that I'm down on fetish, but this one isn't mine), and that works. Consensual, sane, and happy is happy is how it goes here--I especially like the lack of angst over Alpha/Beta/Omega biological imperatives.

Fandom: TEEN WOLF (TV) / THE AVENGERS (movieverse)
Pairing: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski (pre-slash), Clint Barton/Phil Coulson
Length: ~ 23698 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] morganoconner
Author Website: writing on AO3; Shadow Legacy
Why this must be read: I admire writers who can take two quite different canons, and blend them together in a way that makes perfect sense, the kind of sense that makes you go, "oh, of course, it's like that!" Canon-compliant with the Avengers and TW (to S2), Clint Barton is the Hale that got away. Convinced he contributed to the fire that killed the family, and that Laura and Derek were better off without him, Clint changed his name and went to work for SHIELD. Like Derek, Clint's got that tough guy/lone wolf thing working for him, and more than enough guilt to go around. I don't want to reveal too much of the story because it unfolds in a way that really makes you believe Clinton (Barton) Hale is Derek's older brother. There's plot, emotional turbulence, and sweet moments in between, all of it written in Morgan's easy-flowing style that demonstrates she gets these characters, all of them - 'cause even the Avengers make an appearance (much to fanboy Stiles' delight.)

'You're supposed to be dead,' Derek growls, not backing down despite Clint's show of submission.' )

Very true to movie canon Tony/Rhodey, this angsty gem made my heart hurt like a mofo. It's the best Rhodey characterization I've read, and I felt for both of them equally in this.

Length: 1814 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen

Why this must be read:
The Science Boyfriends are the sekrit pairing of my heart (but I do read most slash pairings in the Avengers universe and intend to mix it up this month with my recs). Therefore, I was predisposed to like this. Then I read it, and chortled with glee. Protective Hulk going postal on bad guys stupid enough to threaten Tony...that makes total sense, and Tony snidely provoking Reed Richards will never get old. Coulson is the martyr who deals with the repeated property damage and an irate Fury, and even Doom is disgusted with the craptastic judgment of his minions.
