Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Pairing: Steed/Emma
Length: 1,008 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] blinkiesays
Author Website: her fic journal, [livejournal.com profile] iheartentropy
Why this must be read:

Because it's simply charming, with wonderfully absurd scenarios and spot-on characterization. This story fills us in on what happens between an adventure's end and a silly tag, an ingenious concept pulled off delightfully well. leah k captures the style of the show absolutely superbly, and the pairing is beautifully understated, just as it should be. This is my last rec of the month, and I can't think of a better note on which to end.

27th-Dec-2009 10:52 am The Zed Files by BitShifter (PG-13)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Pairing: Steed/Emma if you squint
Length: 20,277 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: her FF.net profile
Why this must be read:

The blatant X-Files influence is used to excellent effect. This story perfectly captures the style of the atmospheric, sci-fi Season 4 episodes (which are among the series' best), and the plot is perfectly crazy with hints of darkness beneath the surface, making for a highly entertaining read. The ending in particular is absolutely brilliant. Steed and Emma are amazingly well-written; their banter flows perfectly throughout this seven-part epic, not a single line out of place. This story is part of a lengthy series, but it can be read without prior knowledge of the other stories, and in any case it deserves to be read, first or last. BitShifter seems to have begun writing Avengers fics in 2005 and become insanely prolific since, and I am crossing my fingers that she sticks around, because I've been lurking about for years, and it's been a long time since the fandom has been blessed with any regular writers half this good. My figurative hat is permanently off to her.

24th-Dec-2009 07:47 pm Advent Tarot II -- The High Priestess by InaMac (PG-13)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Character: Emma
Length: 264 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inamac
Author Website: her IJ
Why this must be read:

Since we're on about Emma and kinks, here's an extra treat in the form of a hilarious little ficlet. Remember 'A Touch of Brimstone,' a.k.a. the episode with the very kinky Queen of Sin costume that was actually banned in the US? Well, InaMac does, and this ficlet is from the point of view of the lucky bureaucrat handling Emma's resulting expenses claim. I'm not going to include an excerpt because the fic is so short, but seriously, is that concept not enticing enough?

Vidder: kellygarrett312
Musical artist: the Kinks
Character: Emma (some Steed/Emma)
Vidder on LJ: unknown
Vidder's website: her YouTube page
Why this vid kicks ass:

I hope no one minds me doing this a day early, given that tomorrow is Christmas and I won't have time, and seriously, this vid needs to be shared. There is a reason Emma is considered one of the sexiest TV heroines ever, and it has never been put better than this. kellygarrett312 sets a delightful mix of fight scenes, ship tease and general gorgeousness to the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," which both for the lyrics and swinging '60s' rock 'n' roll vibe is a perfect choice. Even if you're not familiar with The Avengers, this vid is a must-see. Watch Emma kick ass and look amazing doing it. Your eyes will pop along with Steed's.

22nd-Dec-2009 04:43 pm The Avengers Forever by Caroline Miniscule (PG-13)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Pairings and Characters: Steed/Emma, background Gambit/Purdey, Cathy, Tara
Length: 17,806 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: The Thunder Child: SF & Fantasy Webzine
Why this must be read:

This is an Avengers story set in the present day (well, probably a few years ago now, but this decade at least), and it works, and that's a huge achievement by itself, because The Avengers lived by ridiculous '60s' illogic that simply doesn't translate. However, here Caroline Miniscule manages to imagine plausible futures for everyone, and she gets the tone exactly right: the villains are quite odd, just as all Avengers villains should be, and the plot has the feel of an episode but is just enough darker to be believable in our time. All of the Avengers are very much in character, and if this is indeed their last adventure, it is a wonderful way to go out.

Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Pairing and Characters: Cathy/Emma, Steed
Length: 4,403 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aerye
Author Website: aerye
Why this must be read:

Re: the pairing -- yes, you read that right, and as if it weren't reason enough, this is a seriously entertaining, wonderful story that reads just like an episode, with all the classic Avengers quirkiness. Steed has been kidnapped, and it's up to Cathy and Emma to rescue him. It is really very sad indeed that these two awesome ladies in leather share no scenes in canon. They make an excellent team here, though I suppose that's to be expected, as they are Cathy Gale and Emma Peel, after all. aerye has both women's voices down pat, and their interactions are excellent.

Plot somewhat recalls 'How to Succeed... at Murder' but is much smarter and crazier and in every way better. aerye also gives us fun secondary characters who add color to the story without overpowering it, just like the show at its best. This story must be read simply because it is one of a kind, but also because it is insanely well-done.

Title: The Four Heads Are Better Than Two Affair by wiccagirl24
Pairings: Emma/Illya Kuryakin, implied Steed/Emma and Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24
Author Website: her fic journal, [livejournal.com profile] wiccaficca
Why this must be read:

This story has been recced before by a Man From U.N.C.L.E. driver, but I don't know how well-known it is to Avengers fans, and if you do not know it, you really should. Unlike my other crossover rec, this is not crackfic, or at least it's not any crackier than either show's canon. These two similarly ridiculous '60s' spy series with similarly unflappable, witty-banter-exchanging protagonists were truly meant to be crossed over, and [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24 pulls it off with style, dead-on character voices and even a shred of plot. Although it's really Emma and Illya's story, as they free themselves from THRUSH imprisonment and discover an unlikely connection, my favorite part has got to be Steed dealing with suspicious Napoleon. Perfect Steed, and that is no mean feat. Seriously, though, the whole thing is wonderful.

Pairings: Steed/Jack Harkness, Cathy/Tenth Doctor, Tenth Doctor/Jack Harkness, implied Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rabbitfics
Author Website: her LJ (it's a fic journal)
Why this must be read:

I admit that this was written by my partner-in-crack and that, once the idea planted itself in her head, I did a lot of "YOU MUST WRITE THIS RIGHT NOW" capslocking...but that is only because I knew she would do it well, and oh did she ever. This fic is freaking hilarious and I have been royally selfish in not reccing it before. Not to mention it's one of very few stories that feature Cathy. I love my girl Cathy, and [livejournal.com profile] rabbitfics definitely does her justice here. Her "casually bisexual man of the world" Steed is wonderful as well. Have I mentioned that this thing is freaking hilarious?

Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Pairings: Steed/Emma, Steed/Tara
Length: 5,786 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thisiszircon
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Because it completely gets everything that is so beautiful and so tragic about the Steed/Emma relationship. For all their verbal sparring, many of Steed and Emma's most meaningful exchanges are nonverbal, and Zircon seizes on this and creates a story arc that is amazing and perfectly in character (and so damn sad, but that's canon). Her Tara is excellent too, and by the end of the fic, you will ache for all three of them. Steed/Tara doesn't usually work for me, but here, it makes perfect sense.

8th-Dec-2009 08:21 pm Mirrors in Belfast by John Steed Esq (R)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Character: Steed (some Steed/OFC)
Length: 15,835 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: his FF.net profile
Why this must be read:

At first, I wasn't sure about reccing this -- it's dark, dark, dark. This is an origin story of sorts for Steed, and at many points, you will not recognize him, not even as his less likeable earlier incarnation...and that is the whole point. This is one theory on how an ordinary spy could become the person that Steed is. Also, it's exceedingly well-written. Not for the faint of heart -- as the author warns in the summary, it's graphically violent -- but utterly fascinating.

3rd-Dec-2009 10:08 pm A Fine Bag of Rats by Mia McCroskey (NC-17)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Pairings: Steed/Emma, background OMC/OFC
Length: 11,051 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Mia's Mar Vista News
Why this must be read:

Because it shows us Steed and Emma among friends, which the show rarely thought to attempt. TV characters in those days weren't given nearly as much backstory as they are now, because there just wasn't any apparent need for it. Steed and Emma appear to do pretty much everything together, living in their own private world and only inviting the few old friends we did see in when the plot required it (the friends' odds of surviving the episode were not good).

In this story, Mia McCroskey takes a serious look at the consequences of this sort of lifestyle, buried within a fun story of a luxurious, prank-filled weekend getaway. Oh, and your heart will ache for Steed, who has just come back from an emotionally difficult mission and whose pain is made worse by the fact that he can't tell Emma about it. This story is unabashedly shippy (see the rating!), but what I like most about it is how it underscores that, above all, Steed and Emma are friends. I do personally ship them, but I don't need that to enjoy a story -- just the acknowledgement of how close their friendship undeniably is, and how much they both need each other.

1st-Dec-2009 06:13 pm Cryptic by Lydia (PG)
Fandom: THE AVENGERS
Characters: Steed, Emma
Length: 7,091 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lydiabell
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Because it could seriously be a lost episode. Steed and Emma are both wonderfully in character, and the zany plot is very much in keeping with the series, engaging OC mastermind and all. Also, it is one of the best Avengers gen fics I've read to date -- the fandom is heavily shippy, so good, IC, just-like-the-show gen fic is rare. The thing I like most about this story, though, is the plot's progression. The story opens with a routine kidnapping and ends with...well, I won't spoil, but suffice to say it's far from routine, and thus perfectly Avengers.

1st-Dec-2009 04:43 pm The Avengers: Fandom Overview

The Avengers was a classic British spy series that ran from 1961-1969. Over those years, it evolved a lot, starting out as gritty and realistic and ending up as the campiest thing that ever camped, a treasure trove of absurd plots, witty banter and delightful innuendo (the latter two often went hand-in-hand). The one constant was Patrick Macnee, as John Steed.

Title: The League Extraordinaire
Fandom: The Man From UNCLE, James Bond, the Avengers, Our Man Flint, The Girl from UNCLE, Get Smart, Mission: Impossible, Modesty Blaise, I Spy, Savage, The Prisoner, Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu and Matt Helm (yes, all of them, seriously! I'm not going to tag all the fandoms because they won't all fit.)
Pairing: Emma Peel/John Steed, but no more than what you see on the show
Length: epic
Author: DarkMark
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Dark Mark's Fanfiction.net Page
Why this must be read:

This is basically the crossover spy adventure of truly epic proportions. I'm a sucker for intertextual references, but this story is the icing on the cake. I didn't even realize that it was possible to write so many characters so well, but DarkMark catches each of their voices perfectly while plotting a complex adventure with an old school villain worthy of our heroes' time. If you like old school spy shows and an author who captures the zeitgeist of the 60's, you simply must read The League Extraordinaire.

15th-Mar-2008 12:55 am The Four Heads are Better Than Two Affair by wiccagirl24 (PG)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE, THE AVENGERS
Pairing: gen, with hints of Steed/Mrs. Peel, Illya/Mrs. Peel and Napoleon/Illya
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24
Author Website: archives of all her stories can be found at [livejournal.com profile] wiccaficca
Why this must be read:

Heck, I couldn't choose just one crossover to rec today. I've been surprised by the relative lack of inter-spy show crossovers for this fandom outside of a few involving the Impossible Mission Force and Hawaii Five-O. Surely there can only be so many megalomaniacs bent on world domination out there; you'd think that we'd see more agencies wanting to team up with an organization as international in scope as UNCLE. [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24 brings in Britain's top two "avengers of crimes extraordinary" working on the other end of a case that Illya and Napoleon have been pursuing; both pairs are remarkably similar in their knack for droll banter and understated tolerance for the absurd that just epitomizes cool. My favorite moments involve Illya and Emma Peel freeing themselves from yet another villain's dungeon - if Illya could ever meet his female match, Mrs. Peel would be the one. They share UST with their partners (oops, sorry, viewer projection here), an athletic bent and a true geek's passion for science. And I love how Napoleon and John Steed share their razor sharp professional assessments presented under a cloak of genial openess, their concern for their partners disguised as understated wit and that "fist in a black velvet glove" quality.

I'd trust either pair to save the world in style any day, but sometimes Four Heads are Better Than Two.
