Why this must be read:

So, I'm a case!fic lover. Any fandom, any type of crime, any time period: if there's a whodunnit to be found, I'll do my best to ferret it out. The Mentalist fandom tends to lean more toward relationship fics, but--as you would hope in a show about an investigative unit--there are case stories as well.

This is one of my favorite case!fics in the fandom: After the death of her grandmother's husband, Lisbon goes to stay with her to pay her respects. Jane, ever nosy, follows and insists that everything is not as it seems, all the while charming the pants off Lisbon's family.

Lisbon's grandmother is an EXCELLENT OC that I would love to see more of. The case and the method of solving it wouldn't at all be out of place on an episode, the entire team is well-represented, and there's just enough Jane/Cho to keep a slasher like me happy. Totally a worthwhile read (and, as it happens, the author is writing a fairly epic Jane/Cho series, so if you enjoy Rouge, I highly recommend checking it out).

Why this must be read:

I don't usually go out of my way to seek out crack fics, but the author's summary caught me because I realized, as I read it, that I could SO ENTIRELY RELATE LIKE WHOA:

"At some point I realized that all my favorite shows had the same main character: someone supernaturally brilliant and tortured who could analyze anybody in a second, have the complete scoop on them and see them coming from a mile away and hence never be taken off guard or bested. I wondered what this said about me. I also wondered what it would be like to stick them all in the same room..."

All four fandoms are given equal weight, so if you're aware of at least two of them, I highly recommend checking this hilarious little concept out.

Pairing: Jane/Lisbon implications
Length: 12,882
Author on LJ: Not sure they have one
Author Website: On AO3
Why this must be read:

For those of you who read sixthlight's AMAZING steampunk (that's right: steampunk) Mentalist AU, "What You See Is What You Get," I am absolutely ecstatic to report that there is now a sequel!

And for those of you who haven't read "What You See" (which was recced here last year), I highly recommend both stories: the world building is incredibly fun, entertaining, and comes crosswise to the characters we're familiar with with just enough IC-ness to engage in some truly excellent character study. Along with electrick lights, magic, and the possibility of demons. Honestly, it's amazing. Go leave heaps and heaps of feedback to encourage the author to continue the series. We'll all benefit.

(I do recommend that those who haven't read "What You See" start there first: otherwise you'll miss some of the references in "Body Language." Both are absolutely worth the time.)

This fic is short, lyrical, poetic, a bit dark, more than a bit sad, and very, very lovely: Patrick Jane's secret daydream juxtaposed with the violent promise of his present collision course with Red John. HIGHLY recommended.

Why this must be read:

I actually missed this story when it was first posted and just found it recently, to my UTTER AND COMPLETE DELIGHT. It's extremely in-character, makes you want to huggle basically everyone on the team, and has excellent dialogue along with enough poignant angst to make it reach inside and grab you a little bit. In a good way.

It's actually an amnesia!fic, which I'm usually not a fan of, but this story is absolutely superb, so if--like me--you're wary of fics of that particular trope, I still highly recommend giving it a try. You won't be sorry.

Why this must be read:

Jane and Lisbon dissect each other over an unplanned Christmas dinner. AKA another Jane/Lisbon character study! This time with non-graphic sex, a bit of canonical darkness, some snappy dialogue, and Christmas (it's snowing where I am...couldn't help myself, despite being a couple months late). Very well written, and leaves you aching for the both of them.

Hi, all! I'm [livejournal.com profile] sprl1199 back for my second turn at the Mentalist van. This month, I'll be focusing on reccing as many pairings and genres as possible, with special focus on those stories that have come out over the last year. Thanks for trusting me to drive!

Fandom: THE MENTALIST
Pairing: Lisbon/Jane friendship
Length: 10,300
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lady_of_scarlet
Author Website: LJ Masterlist
Why this must be read:

Written for the [livejournal.com profile] mentalist_bb challenge, this fic does a phenomenal job delving into the Lisbon/Jane relationship from Jane's point of view. It's dark, painful in places, but it feels very, very true to both characters. And, for those of you who would rather not read an angst-fest, it also has--as the author says--"strategically placed fluff."

As expected, this fic contains major character death (uh, 4 out of 5 times), but it's breathtaking and sweet. Definitely not to be missed.

This is my final rec! As I said at the beginning of the month, the Mentalist has a small (but proud!) fandom given the number of viewers it consistently gets. It is my fervent hope that more and more fans will get sucked in come join us and help the fan community grow. We've had three great seasons so far, and I'm counting on several more to come.

Thank you so much to everyone who made my first time behind the wheel so lovely! I love this community, and I love the Mentalist, and I am completely honored to have had the opportunity to share some of my favorite stories, authors, and vids with you.

Why this must be read:

This is, without a doubt, one of my very favorite fics in this fandom (which is why I chose it as my final rec). It intelligently and beautifully fills in what happened after the season 2 finale, "Red Sky in the Morning." There's some amazing insight into Jane's character, some very, very sweet Jane/Lisbon interactions, and a bittersweet ending that finishes it off perfectly.

Length: 763 words

Why this must be read:  Continuing the theme of, umm, darkness and badness:

Delirium is an excellently creepy, crawly fic that delves into the mind (and pov) of Red John and his thoughts on Jane. Nothing physical or graphic actually occurs in the fic, however the author warns for implications of non-consensual sex, so read with caution if you find the concept triggering.

Why this must be read:

This one has teeth, people. Big, sharp teeth which are all the more impressive given that the entire fic is less than 700 words. It's hard-hitting, terribly plausible, and my favorite example of Dark!Jane by far.

Warning: Written in response to a kink meme prompt requesting dub-con and hate!sex, this snippet definitely has concepts which may be triggering.

I adore fics that utilize sparse prose and perfect, pithy dialog to carry along a story. This is one such fic.

So read it for the clear mastery of witty banter and in-character interactions. Or read it because it's totally funny and sweet. Or read it because you're a bit of a shipper and haven't seen this one yet. Whatever reason you end up going with, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Because I have decided that today shall be Mentalist het shippy-ness day. Just because.

First rec of two: a lovely, lovely treatment of Rigsby and Van Pelt before their canonical secret dating. This fic features excellent play in team dynamics, a tense/engrossing situation, and a sophisticated, realistic handling of the relationships in the CBI team.  It's extremely well crafted and a great read.

Why this must be read:

A slice of life at the Jane household before Red John enters their lives. It's completely sweet and very hot, and is heartbreaking simply because we all know where it's going to go.

[I'd also like to point out the awesome non-use of specific names. This fic was written before Jane's wife and daughter were ever named by the show (ya know, in season 3), and I have to applaud pensive1's approach to gracefully handling this missing information.]

Fandom: THE MENTALIST
Pairing: Patrick Jane/Angela Ruskin
Length: 3,678 words
Author on LJ: Not sure if she has one
Author Website: On FFnet
Why this must be read:

The first of two fics I'm rec'ing today that concern themselves with a major Mentalist character we never get a chance to meet in the show: Angela Jane (nee Ruskin) is killed five years before the events of the pilot episode, but it's obvious in every episode that follows that her life (and by association, her death) profoundly affected Jane.

Courting Fire takes place in the early carnival years, and the author does a fantastic job showing how those seeds of ambition that so influenced Adult!Jane may have first started in Teen!Jane.

Fandom: THE MENTALIST
Pairing: Gen, crossover with Raines
Length: 1655 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ruuger
Author Website: On AO3
Why this must be read:

This fic is a heartbreaking little slice of a crossover: Detective Raines (from the 2007 TV show "Raines" with Jeff Goldblum) is dispatched to the Jane family house immediately following the discovery of Red John's victims. It's poignant without being over-the-top, and the author did an unbelievable job weaving a character from an entirely different show into a pivotal scene from the Mentalist and making it work. It works really, really well.

(For those of you not familiar with Raines, all you really need to know is that Raines is a detective who solves crimes by talking with hallucinations of the murder victims...he has some issues.)

Fandom: THE MENTALIST

Length: 17k
Author on LJ: I don't know of one
Author Website: On AO3
Why this must be read: One word: steampunk.

Sixthlight has done an amazing job in this fic building an alternate universe that is completely engrossing and fascinating and intriguing and all sorts of other good adjectives. AND, if that wasn't enough, the author included a superb mystery and stayed true to the characters we know and love while fitting them perfectly into a steampunk/fantasy 'verse.

It's honestly one of the best Mentalist fics out there, and I highly encourage everyone (familiar with the show or not) to give it a read.

Fandom: THE MENTALIST
Pairing: Red John/Jane non-con
Length: 10k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] grenegome
Author Website: on LJ
Why this must be read:

Firstly, please be warned that this is a non-con story: it primarily deals with the aftermath of non-con and also includes a bit of non-con of its own. That being said, while I don't typically enjoy non-con stories, this one is just amazing. The author completely nails Jane's personality, and the team!love and reactions detailed in the story are beautiful. I think what I like best is that Jane, while clearly affected by the event, is never a victim in this story.

This fic is a sequel to a kink-meme fill that the author first posted anonymously. That one is a bit more heavy on the non-con than this follow-up (plus, it's from Red John's pov, which is entirely creepy all on its own), but if you don't find the subject triggering, it would be worth reading first. Aftermath occurs the day after.

Why this must be read: Because it's funny! Honestly, every time I read it, I giggle. At least. The author absolutely nailed Jane's voice, and I can *easily* see this scene happening in an episode (assuming, ya know, the producers at CBS were willing to go there).

A couple of notes: I don't know if the author de-anon'ed at any point to claim this fic, but if someone knows differently, please let me know so I can credit appropriately! Also, as this was a kink meme fill, no rating was given. I chose the rating "M" due to subject matter, but I'm probably being overly cautious.

Fandom: THE MENTALIST
Pairing: Jane/Lisbon
Length: 1544
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] not_as_we
Author Website: LJ masterlist here
Why this must be read:  Personally, I have a lot of trouble buying Jane/Lisbon as a ship in the current time frame. By which I mean, I think they'd make a completely indomitable couple in the future, but given Jane's emotional healing (or lack thereof) currently, it takes a lot to make me believe either one of them would choose to initiate something.

This fic makes me believe it. It's short, lyrical, and just as much a character study of Lisbon (and Jane/Lisbon) as it is a hot slice of het.

[Please note that the actual ficlet is untitled. I chose to refer to it as "Teresa Lisbon Over 21 Years" based on the author's summary and for ease of rec'ing.]

Why this must be read:

I adore all of jumpfall's Mentalist fics, and I particularly heart (*HEART*) this story: it's the very best of team dynamics and character study as the CBI crew works together to rescue Jane from an unexpected encounter with a mine shaft.  (No worries to those who aren't fans of H/C...injuries are minimal and there's very little angst beyond that which a Patrick Jane character study would necessarily contain).

Excerpt

"Do you remember what happened?" Lisbon asks.

"Since the only source of light is above me, I'm going to say - and this is purely speculation here - I've fallen," Jane replies cheerily.

Why this must be read: Because it's an epic case!fic. It's well-crafted (and long) with interesting OCs (*cough*long), in-character voices (quite long), and an interesting and compelling mystery throughout. And it's 40k. There are times when you just need something novel-length to escape into for a time. Red Lanterns more than fits the bill.

After a savage assault on a Sheriff's Department in a small, Northern California town leaves several victims dead, one deputy in surgery, another with retrograde amnesia, and an eight-year-old girl missing, the CBI is called in to investigate.  It's a race against time as the team works to uncover the motive for the attack and recover the injured deputy's memories, before the girl is lost forever.

Pairing: Shades of Jane/Lisbon, but primarily gen
Length: Approximately 3k

Why this must be read:

First off, mswyrr has an absolutely gorgeous, lyrical style. Reading her fics almost feels, to me, like reading poetry. Only without all those worries about stanzas and rhythm and such.

Secondly, she honestly just nails Lisbon's character. This fic takes place after the season 2 finale, and focuses on Lisbon focusing on Jane and his reaction to events. However, no real details of the finale are given, so those unfamiliar with the show and/or fearing spoilers should also feel free to read.

Thirdly, there's a purple blanket involved. A zebra print one.

Go check it out! And remember, comments = love.

Okay, let's get this party started! Personally, I am a fan of the small but tenacious slash community in The Mentalist, but this month you'll be seeing rec's of all sorts, so there should be something for everybody.

I'll do my best to rec something every day or two, so by the time May draws to a close, you'll all be sick of me there will be an excellent set of Mentalist recs in the Memories folder.

Fandom: THE MENTALIST
Pairing: Gen
Length: Approximately 3k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] greensilver
Author Website: Also on AO3
Why this must be read:

In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that this fic was written for me during Yuletide 2008. It was written at a time when the show was about halfway through its first season, and fic was sparse on the ground. However, even were it *not* originally written for me personally, I would still be listing it as my first rec, since it's fabulous and provides a good introduction to the titular character.

A snapshot of Jane's mental health immediately after his wife and child are killed running up until approximately 6 months into his assignment with Lisbon's team, there is a strong undercurrent of sadness and loss (as you would expect), but above all, this story is about Jane's strength as his life changes so completely.

It made me fall in love with the character of Patrick Jane all over again and started an affair with the Mentalist that will continue long after the show's conclusion. I hope it does the same for you!
