Why this is a must read: Simply put- it's incredibly hot. Yeow.

Excerpt:
My stomach flutters and I know now that I want more than this. I want to be naked. I want him naked and straining above me. I want him sliding against me in the most intimate of ways. I reach down and grab his wrist, gently pulling his hands away from me. Turning in his embrace, I stare into a pair of dark blue eyes gone almost black from desire. I lift the hand that held me so tightly, so perfectly and kiss his fingers. He makes his first sound, a low rumble that starts in his chest, then comes tumbling out past his lips. I slip his finger into my mouth, swirling my tongue over it before nibbling, taking it farther in. I slide it in and out of my mouth in the most perverse of ways before taking the next finger in with it. He's not having any of it.

Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Zeke Anderson/Rusty Wallace
Length: 5144 words
Author on LJ: No LJ
Author Website: Notes From the Underground
Why this is a must read:
Morgan has written a rare pairing in Sgt Zeke Anderson and Capt Rusty Wallace. She shows a side of Zeke we rarely see: vulnerable, shaken to the core by the loss of an infant in his care. Wallace tries to reach out to Zeke with limited success. A moving exploration of the relationship between a commander and his sergeant, who’ve moved beyond professional respect to friendship and more.

Excerpt:
Rusty crouched beside his sergeant and surveyed the damage. Physically there wasn’t much to see. He was cleaned up. The bullet graze on his arm wasn’t much more than a scratch, they’d closed it with a few stitches. The leg wound was hidden under clean fatigues. It was only a flesh wound, he’d been told.

That would all be encouraging, except for the sight of Zeke’s face. It was chilling. Like waking up and finding himself on the dark side of the moon. Somewhere cold and barren and most frightening of all…

Alone.

If Zeke checked out, Rusty would be alone.

Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Lt Myron Goldman/Sgt Zeke Anderson
Length: 20411 words
Author on LJ: No LJ
Author Website: Notes From the Underground
Why this is a must read:
This story is a long, satisfying read, following a seven-episode arc throughout the latter half of second season and the beginning of third season with an epilog set after the war. Kallie does a wonderful job of interweaving missing scenes and canon scenes, all emphasizing the subtext so obvious to all slashers. Particularly enjoyable is how she contrasts the vapid relationship between Lt Goldman and self-absorbed wire service reporter Alex Devlin with the deep friendship/love he shares with Sgt Anderson.

Excerpt:
"Those your guys?" Alex asks, as choppers filled with my ex-platoon touch down on the landing pad.

"Not anymore." A lump immediately settles in my throat as soon as the flippant words are out of my mouth. Zeke. Zeke was 'my guy.' Not any more.

I still check the choppers when 'my guys' return from a mission. I can't help myself and I can't turn it on and off like Alex does. Besides, I need to know Zeke's okay.

I'm grateful when Alex touches my shoulder in a rare show of support. She's happy. She survived her story and is leaving for Paris tomorrow morning. She's upbeat and ready for a new adventure. I can't help wondering if she'll be faithful.

28th-Aug-2009 10:22 pm Don't Judge a Book by its Cover by Creed Cascade (PG)
Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Myron Goldman/Zeke Anderson
Length: 4560 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] creedcascade
Author Website: Notes From the Underground
Why this is a must read:
Creed has always done a particularly good job of writing Snarky!Myron, and this story is no exception. Set in the aftermath of the war, it shows the complex relationship between Zeke and Myron, how well they both fit together and how much they need each other. Particularly telling (and amusing) is a scene showing the two men shopping for groceries. This story is a very enjoyable, long-overdue sequel to “Mrs. Anderson.”

Excerpt:
Myron picked a cart with a wonky front wheel but was too damn stubborn to admit he had grabbed a defective cart, so pretended there was nothing wrong with it. Every time the cart wandered off to the side, Myron pulled it back with a glower. Zeke thought it was endearing that Myron had a habit of glaring at inanimate objects, as if his scowl would scare them into submission and working properly.

Moving down the first aisle, Zeke started to go over the list in his head of what they needed. Myron was a creature of habit and liked to have the same things in the house, even though if left to his own devices, he would wait to the last minute and go to the convenience store to buy stale donuts at two in the morning with a package of smokes. If there was fresh food in the house, Myron would eat it, but it had to be convenient. Which meant Zeke usually bullied Myron into going with him just to get Myron out of the house.

They were in the aisle with breakfast cereal. Zeke put a container of oatmeal into the cart because after a lifetime in institutions, he was conditioned to start his day with a bowl of sticky porridge. He grabbed a box of Lucky Charms, knowing that Myron never ate it as it was intended, but instead would wander around the house with the box in one hand, picking out all the mini marshmallows as he plotted how to destroy the latest manuscript he was officially editing, but unofficially disembowelling.

Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Lt Myron Goldman/Lt Johnny McKay
Length: 684 Words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dixie_chickenne
Author Website: Notes From the Underground
Why this is a must read: Although it is pretty much accepted that Myron and Zeke are the OTP, the second favorite would go to Myron and Johnny McKay. Johnny is completely different in every way from Zeke. Myron and Johnny together? It's like one is holding the gas can, the other a lit match; they are all spark and flame. This is a cute little PWP by Dixie that does a nice job of catching that with just enough snark between them to make it that much more fun.

Excerpt:
Johnny sat down on the edge of the cot and Myron heaved an exasperated sigh as he turned his face further into his pillow. Right now, all he wanted was sleep, he really wasn't in the mood to listen to whatever could be troubling McKay. He stiffened when he felt Johnny's cool, slick hands on his shoulders.

"Relax," Johnny said, his voice just above a whisper.

"It's just a reaction to having your hands so close to my neck," Myron replied tiredly.

26th-Aug-2009 06:21 pm Another Day by Meryn (PG)
Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Lt Myron Goldman, Sgt Zeke Anderson
Length: 1416 words
Author on LJ: No LJ
Author Website: Notes From the Underground
Why this is a must read:

Meryn writes a story that explores the enormous changes that Lt Goldman has undergone from the time he arrived in Vietnam as a 21-year-old green, by-the-book lieutenant to a scant 18 months later, now a well-seasoned leader of a special forces unit. Yes, he’s emotionally fragile and battered, but in the field he’s an utterly capable soldier. Meryn shows Goldman’s thoughts following a mission that forced him to make some hard choices as he struggled to keep a balance between protecting his men and holding on to his humanity. Sgt Anderson shows up just in time to provide some much needed pragmatic advice and support, always the rock upon which Goldman can ground himself.

Excerpt:
I know I was a monster; in that moment, lying low in the bush with sure death passing by mere inches from our heads, I could've done it. I could've smothered the life out of an infant.

What does that say about me? Make me? I mean beyond those crucial few moments. Can a man be a monster for just a little while, and be a human being the rest of the time?
Whatever it takes to protect your men.

Maybe that's what they mean by 'burden of command.'

Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Myron Goldman/Zeke Anderson
Length: 2148 words
Author on LJ [livejournal.com profile] henrycat
Author Website: Notes From the Underground
Why this is a must read: Based on a missing scene from The Road to Long Binh, Zeke is treated to a Myron very few if any ever get to see. Written in Zeke's voice, Mel captures exactly his tone as Zeke realizes that at least for now- thanks to a lot of alcohol- he has the vulnerable Myron, the one that hides his pain and grief from everyone, the young man behind the officer that never wanted to be in the Army in the first place. Zeke isn't sure who he'll have in the morning, but he's thankful for what Myron will give him for this one evening.

Excerpt
"Zeke?" I hear the hesitation in his voice and I turn to meet his gaze. Big mistake. Oh man, we never shoulda got this drunk. Now, now I've got the Myron no one gets to see- stripped to his soul with nothing to hide behind. Those dark eyes plead with me. "Zeke, where're you going?"

"Just gonna sleep on the floor, L-T. Don't wanna disturb you." If I don't get off this bed, I can't be responsible for what happens.

"Please...don't go, Zeke. Please stay." I can hear the barest edge of panic in his voice. He's been left behind so many times, he's afraid I'll do it to him now. He looks so lost and desperate that I can't just leave. I'll stay until he falls asleep. I can control myself that long. I hope.

Characters: Lt Myron Goldman/Sgt Zeke Anderson/Lt Johnny McKay
Length 3204 words

Why this is a must read: This story features the one true threesome in Tour of Duty. Sendal beautifully contrasts what goes on between these three men in the privacy of a room hidden from judgemental eyes and the necessary restraint they have to show in their professional relationships as officers and NCO. That restraint is sorely tested when Anderson is badly injured while on a mission. Sendal also neatly turns the tables by having the young officers seduce the older, otherwise more experienced NCO who hadn’t yet dared to act on his attraction to other men.

Why this is a must read: Major Brat got permission to write in Meryn's "Anytime, Anywhere" series and came up with Zeke and Myron at the movies. Like Meryn's stories in this series, this one is funny, sexy and hot all at the same time.

Excerpt:
He inclined his head towards Zeke, noticing that Zeke leaned in as well. "Besides that, Sergeant, it's going to take a lot more than that to get in my pants."

Zeke's eyes widened in surprise. "Feelin' a little adventurous tonight…sir?" The last word was whispered and drawn out. "Beginning to wonder about you, boy. Seems you got some kinks I ain't found yet."

Myron pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it up. After taking a long drag and exhaling slowly, he let the smoke curl lazily into the air. "S'only kinky the first time around."

Why this is a must read: Sassy has a wonderful take on the infamous shower scene where Myron is smoking, while taking a shower. Yeah, you read that right- you have to see it to believe it. :)

Excerpt
"I think you need some sleep, Goldman." McKay looked uncertainly at him, trying to place the look on his face. He was unreadable, but something had clearly changed. Goldman's cigarette hung loosely from his mouth, though he continued to smoke it. He was no longer drying himself off, the towel in his hands apparently forgotten. He just stood there a moment, dark eyes boring into McKay, making him feel nervous and expectant at the same time.

McKay caught a slight shift in those eyes and before he had time to even consider its meaning, Goldman flung the towel over the wall and tossed his cigarette into the water swirling at their feet.

Excerpt: "Lookin' thoughtful, LT," Zeke said after a few minutes. "Wanna tell me what got ya inta trouble?"

"No," groaned Myron. "I got drunk. I got in a fight. End of story."

"Nothin' is ever that simple with you," Zeke replied and shifted on the bed, moving closer to Myron. A comfortable silence hung in the air between them. Like everything else in their lives, they knew exactly what the other person needed.

Why this is a must read: Based on the slashiest episode (The Road to Long Binh) of Tour of Duty, this is a fun look at the relationship of Zeke and Myron. And although it's fun, Meryn is also careful to remind everyone how dangerous it is for these two men to be in a relationship in Vietnam.

Excerpt: Myron had responded to that second kiss; it'd become desperate and deep, as if each man tried his damnedest to live a lifetime in the moments they had left. Such a simple beginning, before their miracle came through and the NVA pulled back for reasons they'd never know.

They'd both been visibly stunned on the chopper ride back to base. Zeke sat there facing the L-T, though neither of them made eye contact, not with each other or anyone else.

Fandom:
TOUR OF DUTY
Pairing: Myron Goldman/Doc Hockenbury
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] dawnchsr
Author website: Notes From the Underground

Why this must be read:

What is nice about many Tour of Duty authors is that even though they have a favourite pairing they write stories featuring different pairings. This story features another "rare pairing". Myron and Doc suffer internally a lot through the series as characters and this story explores how maybe they could find some solace from the heartache with each other.

Fandom: TOUR OF DUTY
Pairing: Zeke Anderson/Aubrey Decker
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author website: Notes From the Underground

Why this must be read:

And now one of the "rare pairings"...

This story takes the reader back (pre-series) to when Zeke was a young man starting out in the army. It is very interesting to see this younger take on a character we know from the show as a seasoned "Lifer". This fic shows how Zeke's early relationship with his own Sarg helped shape him into the character we know. In a way, the relationship here echoes the relationship Zeke later develops with Myron. Decker is a character seen during a ToD episode and Zeke clearly has a deep friendship with him. I like this explanation of the roots of that friendship and history.

Musical Artist: Evanescence
Pairing: Myron Goldman/Zeke Anderson
Vidder on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] vidsalot
Vidder's Website:
Tour of Duty Vids.com

Why this vid kicks ass:

Admittedly, one of the most over vidded songs out there, yet in this case, it's stunningly appropriate for Lt Myron Goldman. He comes to Vietnam, very young, angry, hurt and running from a legacy that he can't elude. He shoulders a lot as platoon leader and there is no doubt that with each man he loses to the VC, it tears into him that much more. The one woman he wanted to marry walks away from him, the other is killed by a bicycle bomb right in front of him. And he finds out his father, a legendary WWII General is dying of cancer within a few months.

No one will dispute that he is becoming an alcoholic, it's the one thing he leans on to get through the hell that is the war. But through all of it, no matter how bad it gets, he has Zeke Anderson, his sergeant. It's clear he's not sure what to do about Zeke but the chemistry is amazing and undeniable.

Kallie manages to showcase the mess that is Myron Goldman and what got him there. And how he keeps coming back to Zeke who is always there through all of it.

Fact: They shared a room.
Fact: They shower next to one another (with Myron smoking the whole time).
Fact. Johnny reads porn and sits around in underwear while talking to Myron.
Fact. Johnny baits Myron (see previous fact). Myron is irked (e.g. puts a bullet hole line in floor).

Fanon Slash Fact: They make a great pairing to write hot PWPs about with all the UST and intensity.

And that is why this story is hot. PWP hotness. That is enough reason to read it, eh?

Why this must be read:

Characters A and B are in love, but get in a fight. Character A gets amnesia and doesn't remember he loves Character B. Character B angst-fest. Character A gets his memory back, more angst, renewed love. Happily Ever After.

Sound familiar? It's a fandom classic and we keep coming back to classics because we enjoy reading them. I enjoyed this story for that reason. I enjoy seeing how writers take the classic formula and apply them to different fandoms, making it work for those characters.

Tour of Duty is a small fandom, but does have the classics we enjoy, such as this one by Dani. It's a post-war fic. It also features Myron in another Tour of Duty canon fact for many: Myron as an English Professor/Academic (yummy).

This story explores their experience, hi-lighting the true horror of the situation and how truly desperate situations can reveal our true feelings. Author website: Notes From the Underground

Why this must be read: A few years ago several Tour of Duty writers got together and put together a very nice zine. This story is from that zine. What I like about this story is that it is post war and it explores seeing Myron and Zeke's relationship from another character's point of view (Roger Horn). What happens when the people you remembered from the war are different? Or, rather, shall we say you perceive them as different? Another reason I like this story is I (and many ToD fans) have a soft spot for the quirky character of Roger Horn, who was injured and sent home. Did I mention Roger had a harmonica? A harmonica he can't play well at all? Oh yeah, without squinting too much it's pretty easy to imagine that Roger had a thing for his LT (Myron). I love the conversation between Zeke and Roger in this story as two men who can appreciate Myron Goldman in all his snarky goodness. Oh, yes, and hotness abounds.

Why this must be read: Many Tour of Duty stories operate in a wonderful reality I like to call "suspended disbelief". There has been sex in, on, and around jeeps, sandbagged bunkers, hootches, and many more unrealistic, but oh so fun locations. This story is a must read because it is an exploration of a realistic "what if"... what if they got caught. What would happen? This is the military before "don't ask, don't tell" after all. Why this must be read:

You will find a variety of fiction in the Tour of Duty fandom. Everything from humourous (even though we have been told war isn't funny), friendship, hot-dirty-nastyness, and thought provoking. Yes, you will also find dark fic.

This fic is not a happy fic. It's an extreme and disturbing "what if". It reflects a dark headspace that the characters in Tour of Duty can be as a consequence of war and as part of their character development in the series. The brutality of war is not glossed over in the series, and not in the fanfic within the fandom. The character of Johnny McKay is usually portrayed as a fun loving, girl (or boy) chasing chopper jock. But in this fic you can see darker sides of him, and that is what Sassy was exploring here.

Why this must be read:

One of the reasons we love Myron is his sarcasm, temper, and famous (sexy) Goldman rants. He does shoot a dartboard in one episode (it's a long, very amusing story). One of the reasons I love Myron/Zeke is the verbal repartee. Zeke is an enabler and in canon, you can see him amping up Myron in many of Myron's snits. This story is a good example of how that verbal warfare between these soldiers and friends is a form of foreplay.

My name is Creed and I feel very privileged this month to be recommending Tour of Duty (ToD) stories to you.

Tour of Duty is a small fandom with a big heart. I have written and read in many slash fandoms, but I consider this fandom to be home. It has the some of the most talented and friendly authors I have met anywhere, many of which I am pleased to call personal friends. The quality of the fiction in this fandom blows me away, showcasing everything from the inhumanity of war, the personal relationships built during this difficult time, and the enduring power of love. Yes, that does sound clichéd, but it works and there is also an awesome sense of humour in this fandom (just ask anyone about the whole freakin’ platoon being gay…)

For a great introduction to Tour of Duty, please review the fandom overview.

Why this must be read:

The first story I would like to feature this month is written by the talented and ever humble DC. She is the only author who I make a point of reading her gen fic in any fandom. This story (so not get in its hotness) also features one of the rarer slash pairings Carl Brewster/anyone. DC fleshes out Brewster and drew me, and I hope you, into this story. For myself, I could not buy Brewster slashed with anyone until I read this story. It’s that good. Also, it features my personal ToD “one true pairing” of Zeke/Myron. Great angst.

This is the only completed cross-over written in the Tour of Duty fandom of which I’m aware.  Pairing characters from Tour of Duty with those from The A-Team is a natural, given that the A-Team first met one another during the Vietnam War.  Creed Cascade and MajorBrat nicely mesh four of the major characters in a lighthearted tale that begins when two young lieutenants (McKay and Peck), fancying themselves quite the conmen, get themselves into trouble.  Goldman and Murdock come to the rescue.  The authors do a fine job of bringing these disparate characters together in a very plausible way.  The pairs also generate a lot of sexual heat in an impromptu competition of sorts.

Why this is a must read:

One of my favorites, Creed created an A/U that I actually liked. She really thought outside the box when she came up with this universe where all the men are bonded in pairs. Her idea was based on a band of homosexual warriors similar to the "Sacred Band of Thebes." Sergeant Zeke Anderson has recently lost his bonded partner. He's hoping to rebond with Lieutenant John McKay, but all that gets turned upside down when Zeke sees Lieutenant Myron Goldman for the first time.

It's wonderfully different and engaging and you get sucked into the whole premise immediately whether you intend to or not. It's a science fiction story, yet still very much grounded in the feel of Vietnam. And although Creed has tossed the canon universe of the series out the window, the characters are still very recognizable and believable.

Zeke shook his head and blinked, still finding it hard to feel, let alone control his body. He shifted and focused his eyes, only mildly shocked to see a body curled around him. He reached a shaky hand over and tilted the head up that was nestled against his shoulder. It was the boy from the fight earlier. Zeke ran his hand over the boy's cheek, the contact sending waves of pleasure through the bond. This felt so right. "It's him, ain't it?" Zeke murmured quietly. "My brown eyed dream. Tell me what happened."

"No… I need you to tell me," Johnny insisted. "You're bonded again, aren't you?"

"Feels like it," Zeke said distractedly. He was still engrossed in exploring the face of his sleeping bed partner. He remembered this feeling of comfort with Rusty, thinking he'd never feel this way again.
