Title: Barrayarans and Time Travelers by Dira Sudis

Pairing: Aral Vorkosigan/Jack Harkness, canon pairings
Length: 29,914 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis

Why this must be read:
There are two stories in this series. The first takes place pre-Shards of Honor in the Vorkosigan universe, so no Cordelia and a different sort of Aral Vorkosigan, and post-"Children of Earth" in the Torchwood canon. It is utterly delightful! A one-night-stand with a mysterious stranger who keeps his heart in a little blue box and thus cannot die. Perfect!

The second story is no less perfect. The Doctor and Amy Pond come to Barrayar, and Aral Vorkosigan knows who they must be. This is set between Barrayar and The Warrior's Apprentice with a young Miles in the mix along with a perfect Cordelia, and around "Vincent and the Doctor" in the Doctor Who canon (meaning Amy has forgotten that Rory ever existed). All the characterizations are fabulous, even Piotr

Why this must be read:
This is absolutely one of my favorites in the fandom. It's such a refreshing break to read a series where everything is unrelentingly GOOD. This fandom, in particular, is known for a truly staggering amount of whump perpetrated on the characters, but in this series of stories, the author does the exact opposite and only good things happen.

The writing is superb, with nuanced characterizations and attention to details, including details of minor characters and original characters. The premise is suitably complex and fits into the broader details of LMB's universe like a hand in a glove. The first story starts out with a rogue Terran scientist with a universe-altering new technology coming to Miles, which sets off a chain of events that involves history, politics, and even a little revenge. Excellent, excellent story, I highly recommend it!

Why this must be read:
There is action and adventure (trigger warnings for violence, kidnapping, and torture) in this story, but it's really about the nuances of feeling between Miles and Gregor. The tone of this story is just right for this pairing in this universe, with a carefully developed non-linear storyline that builds up to a highly satisfying conclusion.

Miles is kidnapped. Poor kidnappers! But he's also interrogated under fast-penta and tells the truth about his feelings. It's all really terrible and then it's lovely.

OK, this story was post about 13 years ago, so it is obviously not current with the most recent books (it is completely AU for Captain Vorpatril's Alliance in particular), but it's such a rollicking good ride that you should read it anyway! The author truly gets the subtleties of Vorish politics and maneuvering and the complexities of the characters.

This is the story of how Ivan Vorpatril became the most hated man of his generation. And it's really not his fault, you see...

Why this must be read:

This story takes place when Miles was a child, after his grandfather Piotr has become reconciled to Miles.  When Count Piotr holds a meeting with some of his fellow counts to sway their votes on an upcoming bill, Miles slips in with the wine cart to listen in.  This is Piotr at his best: canny, political, using his brain instead of his prejudices.  In this story Miles and Piotr are perfectly written, and we can see why Miles loved him even if he is not perfectly comfortable around him.  And also where Miles learned a lot of his tricks of persuasion.

Warnings: Canonical attempted infanticide
Why this must be read:

Bothari brought Miles to them at lunchtime and reported that he had intercepted the General at the side of Miles's cradle.

This is another missing scene set after the end of Cordelia's Honor but before the epilogue.  On Barrayar, mutants are hated and feared, and it is the traditional duty of a mother to cut the throat of any infant born visibly deformed.  This barbaric process is one that our heroes fight against, within their culture and even within their own family.  Miles was born with twisted and brittle bones because of a poison gas attack on his mother Cordelia before he was born.  Miles' grandfather Count Piotr was shocked and horrified at the "degenerate" galactic woman who fought to keep her "mutie" son alive, and even more so that Aral (Miles' father) supported her.  Miles tells us once, years later, that Piotr tried to kill him as a small child, and only the intervention of Miles' bodyguard Sergeant Bothari saved his life.  Yet eventually Piotr gave up, and even later he was reconciled and formed a fairly good relationship with Miles.

This is the story of what stopped Piotr for good.  It wasn't just Bothari.

Length: 1598 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] jmtorres

Why this must be read:

Here is another awesome story about Kareen, set a few years after the first. This story answers the question "Why is Gregor named Gregor?" Vor names for boys follow a strict pattern: first son gets called by his two grandfathers' first names, second son gets called after his grandfathers' second names. (So the name Miles should have had was "Piotr Miles," but Piotr refused to allow his name to be used when he found out Miles would be born deformed.) So why is Gregor called Gregor, and not Ezar?

This story answers that question with a chilling look at what Kareen has gone through and what kind of a monster Serg is, and how ruthless Ezar is. It is compelling, and shows just how much guts Kareen's got to survive.

Why this must be read:

Princess Kareen is such a tragic figure.  She was abused by her husband Crown Prince Serg, sheltered by Emperor Ezar only because of her son Gregor, captured and used as a pawn by the pretender to the throne, and murdered when she tried to resist.  We know very little about her.  And yet, we do know that no matter what happened to her she was strong, and smart, and unbroken.  Who was she?  Why did she marry Serg?  Did she know what she was getting into?  [insanejournal.com profile] musigneus takes the first few meetings of Kareen and Serg and explores these questions.  I love the way this story fleshes out Kareen, and the shows us a slightly younger Serg who has not yet fallen as far as he soon will, and an Ezar who does not yet know (but perhaps suspects) what a monster his son is.

Length: 45k words

Why this must be read:

Aral is bisexual.  And although he is very thoroughly indoctrinated with Barrayaran sexual ideals about monogamy and heteronormativity, Cordelia is not.  It's not a betrayal if everyone is happy about it.  This series does a wonderful job of exploring what it might be like to be gay on Barrayar, particularly in the military.  It also does a wonderful job of exploring Aral and Cordelia's relationship, and taking an extremely minor character (Aral's aide, Lieutenant Jole) and fleshing him out to a wonderfully three-dimensional person.  It's engrossing and well-done (as if it could be anything else with Dira writing it).  And, of course, there are a lot of complications: it's not enough to say "hey, let's all get together!"  There is a lot of time spent feeling each other out and misunderstanding and negotiating what exactly is going on and what will happen, and making sure it's all safe, sane, and consensual.  It sounds dry when you put it like that, but oh, it's not.  It is so wonderfully angsty and hopeful and when they finally work through all the issues it makes you want to cheer.

Here's the bit from the first fic where Cordelia walks in on Aral and Jole working together and realizes that not only does Aral have a crush on Jole, Jole has a crush on Aral:

Why this must be read:

The Vorkosiverse tends to spawn long, plotty, good AUs, but most of them branch off in the latter part of the series.  This is one of the best, and it starts off before the series even starts.  Aral was married before Cordelia, as a young man, but the marriage was childless and she died young (either suicide or murder); in this AU, it wasn't.  Instead, Petya was born: heir to the Vorkosigans, related to the Vorrutyers, neglected by a father who was going through a really low point in his life and a pawn in the cesspool that was Vor politics before Serg died.  If you're worried about OC's, don't be; Petya is a marvelously drawn person, fully as three-dimensional as any of Lois' own characters.  I love Petya, and I love the perspective he gives on events we know of from canon.  In many ways, he is a truer Vor than Miles could ever be, with his Betan mother and his physical handicaps.

Why this must be read:

But if we can capture this one's true allegiance, it will be something like what I'd had in mind for Komarr in the first place. A generation late, true, and after a long and bloody detour, but--since you bring up these theological terms--a sort of redemption.
Brothers in Arms

Duv is such a fascinatingly complex character.  Child of one of the most committed Komarran terrorists, and terrorist himself in his child, he grew up to be a history professor and (as soon as they started letting Komarrans in) an officer in the Barrayaran military.  He joins knowing how hard it will be, that he will have to be twice as good as everyone else to get half the respect, because he believes that violence between conqueror and conquered is useless and in the end the only hope for peace is integration.  It can't have been an easy journey.  Here's one day along that journey: a confrontation with the past, the future he has chosen, and the meaning of honor.  It's a gripping and powerful story that shouldn't be missed.

The Vorkosiverse is blessed with wonderful AUs, people exploring "what if?" things had happened differently.  Some are short, some are very very long.  This is a long one, but also one of the more far-out in concept.  Miles from an apocalyptic future (now Jossed since Cryoburn came out) is accidentally sent back in time to Mirror Dance (in the omnibus Miles Errant), with an experimental ship, a dead pilot, Armsman Roic, and a three year old Princess.  He has to figure out how the heck to save the world from the great enemy he knows is coming, starting with fewer resources than he ever has before.  It's gripping, exciting, and wrenches events off course from canon in interesting ways.  And the second story, "We All Want To Change The World" is even better, as they deal with the consequences of the first story.

Why this must be read:

Dira Sudis is another of the great authors of the fandom; I'm always so happy to see her name pop up, because I'm sure to get a great fic to read, and this one did not disappoint.  This is a missing scene for the end of The Vor Game, but read it even if you haven't read the book--it stands on its own two feet.  Emperor Gregor was raised by Aral and Cordelia Vorkosigan after his parents and grandfather died while he was still young.  Aral was his regent, and they were very close, as were he and Cordelia.  But they never told him much about his father Prince Serg, and so when Gregor finds out the truth it's a huge shock that sets off a suicide attempt and the major plot of the second half of the book.  But as The Vor Game is told from Miles' POV, we never get to see what happens afterward, when Gregor and Aral and Cordelia are all on the same planet again and have time to talk.

Gregor is young, and unsure, and his world has just been shaken.  History makes a difference, and so does family, and trust, and love, and duty, and Dira shows us how much in a poignant three thousand words.

Why this must be read:

"Because Ekaterin is awesome" is true but probably not enough of a reason. [livejournal.com profile] sahiya is one of the best authors in fandom, and this fic is a prime example of the strengths of a Five Things fic. We don't meet Ekaterin in canon until she is thirty, with ten years of heartbreaking and soul-crushing marriage to an abusive man. That she has survived as well as she has, and learns to stop being afraid and claim her own strength and agency afterwards, show just what kind of strength she learned in those ten years, buried deep where her husband couldn't touch it. These five things explore what she might have been like, at twenty, without the pain and heartache, but also without the wisdom and maturity she learned with such cost. All of these ways are very plausible, and very true to the characters as we know them, and all of them tug on your heart, either wishing that things could have happened like that or glad that they didn't.

Regret . . . And what if she and Miles had met at twenty, instead of she and Tien? It had been possible; she'd been a student at the Vorbarra District University, he'd been a newly minted officer in and out of the capital. If their paths had crossed, might she have won a less bitter life? - pp. 534, A Civil Campaign

3rd-Mar-2011 09:24 am Aral Vorkosigan's Dog by Philomytha
It is my honor to be reccing the Vorkosigan universe--the Vorkosiverse, if you will--as a Featured Small Fandom this month.  Since it's been a while since the Vorkosiverse was featured, a lot has changed.  The overview has been updated, but I thought I'd give a short summary, anyway.

The Vorkosigan chronicles are space opera—but space opera with a twist. Lois McMaster Bujold, the author, is quite adept at drawing from and blending a variety of genres: comedy, tragedy, romance, mystery, adventure, coming-of-age, military SF, you name it, you’ll find it somewhere in the series. Bujold is a woman of wit and intelligence, and a sharp knowledge of human nature; her works are character-centered, full of vibrant and real-seeming people and places. You can read her works as adventure novels, and enjoy them immensely; they function equally as well on the “literary” level, with deeply moving and relevant themes and some of the most beautiful prose I’ve ever seen. Also, her explorations of biotechnology and its implications are well-thought-out and get more relevant with time, not less, which is something few SF writers can say about their technology.  And if you've never read the books, you're in luck!  All the books but one are available for legal download for free.

There's been a lot of Vorkosiverse fanfic posted in the last few years, enough that I was very surprised to see it listed as eligible for Yuletide.  There is a thriving fandom in Russian, with some crossover; as I don't speak Russian, I won't be reccing anything from there.  There are at least one, sometimes two ficathons a year, plus a regular stream of other fic.  Unlike most fandoms, the Vorkosiverse doesn't have a gen/het divide.  Most fic is gen, or at least not focused on pairings.  LMB is known for creating fascinatingly intricate worlds and realistic characters; most of the fic explores that world and the characters in it.  Romance is a part of it; but usually in service to the characters and plot, rather than the other way around.

Illyan is assigned to watch Aral Vorkosigan during the Escobaran war. Soon he has to choose between his duty and his conscience, and the consequences rapidly get beyond him.

Philomytha is one of the great authors of the Vorkosiverse.  She writes new fic pretty regularly, and they're all great.  This story is Simon Illyan's point of view of Shards of Honor (found in the Cordelia's Honor omnibus).  Barrayar is an unstable pit of vipers, filled with ruthless men.  Young Simon is an officer in ImpSec, the military secret police, which is aligned with Emperor Ezar.  ImpSec is locked in bitter rivalry with the Ministry of Political Education, the civilian secret police, which is aligned with Crown Prince Serg.  Ezar can't live much longer; Serg, (a paranoid psychopath) wants a military victory to cover himself with glory.  Simon Illyan gets thrown into the middle, assigned as bodyguard/watchdog to Commodore Lord Aral Vorkosigan, one of the few men not afraid of either Serg or the Ministry of Political Education, as the invasion of Escobar begins.  So there he is, in the middle of a power struggle within an invasion, trying to do his duty and follow orders, to survive, and to find something of goodness and honor in that mess.  Like all Philomytha's stories, this is well written and gripping.

Pairing: Owen Harper/Bel Thorne
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] legionseagle
Author website: None I could find
Why this must be read:

Oh god, because the characterization is spot on and...[livejournal.com profile] legionseagle made me like Owen. I dislike Owen, yet in this story I sympathized with him and followed him avidly through 10 chapters. (They're not incredibly long chapters, so don't let that put you off reading.) The grasp of the Miles Vorkosigan universe and the Torchwood universe are fabulous, and this is a truly enjoyable story.

I think it explains Owen a bit without whitewashing the fact that he's a bastard at heart, and I do so love fic that explains something about the characters.

Why this must be read:
After a few dark or sad stories, I wanted to leave you with something happy-making. I've enjoyed introducing new fans to the fanfic available in this fandom, and I hope there will be new writers and more stories in the future.

I love the overly persistent (to the point of annoying) Miles in this story. It's so very canon. *g* There's some good character interaction, and this tale of the dinner party from hell is very amusing. I love Lady Alys and Simon Illyan here.

Fandom: VORKOSIGAN UNIVERSE
Pairing: Taura/Unnamed Man I Assume Is Roic (but also could be considered gen)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mamadeb
Author Websites: [livejournal.com profile] mamadebfic and Debra Fran Baker's Notebook

Why this must be read:

A bittersweet Taura story, set post-Winterfair Gifts, this made me sniffly. I've always wanted to know more about Taura, so I was pleased by the character's prominence in that novella. Here's a story if you want a little more.
