Why this must be read: It's got nominations for awards!

But seriously, RAC's fics are always excellent, and many of them have already been recced here. I was surprised to find this one wasn't! I'm not usually a fan of crossovers, especially ones where I don't already know the characters; but RAC has balanced the fandoms perfectly, and by the end of the story Jim and Artie had become people I wanted to know better. But Napoleon and Illya are by no means neglected, and have some wonderfully sweet hurt/comfort scenes. Most of all, I enjoy watching the two sets of partners having to deal with the same tensions between them...

Why this must be read:

A lot of research goes into WWW fic--- probably more the shows writers did--- and this is a fine example of working historical detail within a case fic. Plenty of angst here in this classic zine story as well.

Jim decided he would simply be professional, treat this like any other assignment.

Sometimes a man just wants to go to a brothel. Just not the brothel his partner wants to go to...

Artemus ditched Jim at the whorehouse.

Ah, I've been a bad driver, and real life caused me to run into ditches several times this month. So here are my remaining WWW recs for this month... right under the wire!

 Fandom: Wild Wild West
Pairing: Jim/Artie
Length:6,000

Why this must be read:

Through out the run of WWW, Jim West would exercise all around the train. Push-ups. Chin-ups. All this usually shirtless.

How does Artie deal with all this? Well, apparently by inventing the Ab Crunch!

Seventy-five, seventy-six, seventy-seven…

4th-May-2008 01:31 pm A Room for the Night by Taliesin (NC-17)
 Fandom: THE WILD WILD WEST
Pairing: Jim/Artie
Length: approx 20,000 words
Rating: N17

Author Website: The Depot

Why this must be read:

My first slash rec is by Taliesin, a long-time WWW and Man From UNCLE writer. Her UNCLE/WWW crossover was in fact previously recced here on [community profile] crack_van. She's also the publisher of the main zine in the fandom Gentlemen Never Tell, which will publishing it's 10th issue later this spring.

This is a first time story, a first meeting story (something the canon doesn't provide) and a spin on the old fanfic cliche of "sharing a bed".
Also a good example of the historical accuracy the fan writers strive for (that the shows writers often didn't!) --- Taliesin has clearly done research on frontier hotels!

"Artie, how many times have I told you not to go messing around with your experiments in hotels?"

Why this must be read:

A fine Gen story that's a good introduction into the Jim and Artie dynamic: Jim does something noble and gets into trouble, Arte rescues his sorry ass, snarking all the while. Also features Disguised!Artie, my favorite Artemus.

One note---these stories are in PDF files.

2nd-May-2008 05:39 am The Wild Wild West--- TOS
Action! Adventure! Men in tight pants! Shiny shiny trains! Soulful B&W AND Glorious Color! Campy subtext! Mind-bending anachronisms! Proto-steam punk gadgets! Evil genius dwarfs! Secret Service Agents sitting entirely too close together on the settee!

Howdy! I'm  [profile] vertigomac, and I'll be riding the Crack_Train for the fandom The Wild Wild West this month.

15th-Mar-2006 11:54 pm Man From U.N.C.L.E./The Wild Wild West (R)
Title: The Wild Wild U.N.C.L.E. by Taliesin

Pairing: Solo/Kuryakin & West/Gordon
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Taliesin's Reach

Why this must be read:

Napoleon and Illya have suddenly found themselves prisoners in the Wild West due to Dr. Loveless and his time machine. There is a third man also in Loveless's tender care, named James West, and his partner Artemus Gordon has come to rescue him.  The two sets of agents join forces to capture Loveless and also get the U.N.C.L.E. agents back to their time and place.

Artie and Illya bond together in the train's laboratory, which causes an odd reaction in Jim that he doesn't understand.  These strange feelings get stronger when Jim and Artie accidentally catch sight of Illya and Napoleon kissing.  Jim is shocked, but Artie starts to wonder if there is really anything wrong with being in love with another man.

Taliesin neatly wraps the mission and its planning around a story of two sets of men learning to work with each other and with their own feelings.

Author on LJ: none
Author Website: http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/home.htm
Why this must be read: It says a lot about how much I enjoy Rac's writing that I'm reccing a story that includes WWW. I remember enjoying the show when it aired years ago but the slash pairing has never done anything for me. Yet, while it's Napoleon and Illya I read the story for, I was able to somehow get just as involved with what Jim and Artie were going through. Almost a hundred years separate their worlds, yet both pair of men must face the same problems a relationship like theirs engender.

But that's only half the story; there's still the Affair itself. And it works, the entire scenario as to how the men happen to meet and join forces. Both shows tended toward the fantastic, so it wouldn't have been much of a stretch on either show for their protagonists to end up in exactly the situation they do here. It's like an episode I missed and am only now reading about. A long and truly enjoyable story.
