Why this must be read: It's difficult to give the reason why this story should be read without giving away too much. Suffice to say it's the only story I've read where I understand Bodie's choices...all of them. Who he loves, what he'll do for love and for his love are exquisitely shown with small gestures and an economy of words.

Honestly, I can't wrap my mind around even the possibility of a Bodie/Cowley pairing. So the story doesn't work for me on that level.

But I think this is a very astute observation as to why the Lads make such a great team:
...Bodie, now was the youth he had been; Doyle was the prototype of the man Cowley had become.

Thing is, I'm never sure whether to believe Bodie at the end.

Normally, I can't either. In fact, I won't read a Pros story with any pairing other than B/D. But since Bodie and Cowley never are together I can live with it, plus at least here I could understand why Bodie wished to be with Cowley. It was almost as if it was what he was giving, rather than what he would get, that was the attraction.

Yes, as if together they make a whole...which tends to play up the idea that Cowley isn't, that he's lost something along the way.

Oh, I believe him. For one, because I believe Cowley is correct in his assumption as to what Doyle's response would be to playing second fiddle. Plus, I never got the feeling from the rest of the story that Bodie was being anything but truthful, and only told Cowley that after Cowley implied that he was on the rebound with Doyle.

It never occurred to me to doubt Bodie's sincerity, mainly because he is showing through all his little actions how much he loves Ray. The insistence that the bullet wound be looked after, the whispered words, the tender care he takes of Ray in keeping him warm and comfortable despite the risk of being discovered. I can easily believe that Ray was his first choice and that he only turned to Cowley because he needed someone to love.

It was almost as if it was what he was giving, rather than what he would get, that was the attraction.

One of the best stories ever written for PROS. Says so much in a few words.
Absolutely wonderful.

I believe Bodie told the truth too. Cowley was the one who wouldn't accept what he was being given, but then Cowley can't understand not being in control of a situation--even love.

It's certainly one of my favorites! One I reread often.
