09:46 am Ab Initio by carolinecrane (R)
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Sara/Warrick
Author LJ:[livejournal.com profile] carolinecrane
Author website: http://carolinecrane.net
Why this must be read:

So any one in the fandom when asked for Nick/Greg, you are pointed towards Caroline, and for very good reason. She is amazing and articulate and has a loooot of good stuff (*cough* check out the site *cough*). This, however, isn't Nick/Greg (see, I am being good with the whole only selecting one pairing thing... I am trying!!!) This is het, again, and my OneTrueHeteroPairing for CSI. Sara and Warrick have a great chemistry, and Caroline really pulled it off well in this peice. She really brought Warrick alive, which is difficult for most writer's to actually get, and she really brought out the pain that Sara must feel towards the complete and absolute abandonment on Grissom's part... it is just beautiful. I think a good 90% of people could relate to the pain. And hot, oh with the hot. So vivid and real that you feel like you are watching it, and so... guh. With the hot. I am off to go read it for myself again, but I leave you with a bit to get you started:

10:32 am Under the Influence, by Rachael Sabotini (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords
Author Website: Rachael Sabotini's House o'Fanfic
Why this must be read: I think this may have been the first slash story I ever read. It's short and yummy, and devastatingly funny.

Duncan had redecorated the loft in shades of teal and fuscia, accenting it with MacLeod plaid. The sooner someone dragged him back to his normal state of heterosexuality, the better for the world. Methos smiled; besides, it would be fun.

12:43 pm "Circumstances" by HeidiM (PG-13)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1978
Pairing: Starbuck/Apollo
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Apollolover
Why this must be read: By now, you may be starting to get the impression that BSG78 stories tend to be long. Very long. That's a pretty accurate impression, actually. HeidiM's work is no exception in this regard--she's probably best known for her long, dark, angsty stories. But that's not what I'm reccing today, because I thought it was time for a change of pace...

12:46 pm "From The Perspective of Meatloaf" by amphetamine_47 (G)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Billy Keikeya/Dee Dualla
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] amphetamine_47
Author Website: On Amphetamine
Why this must be read: There is no doubt that this story belongs in the crack!fic category, but all kudos to [livejournal.com profile] amphetamine_47, because she somehow manages to make it something more than that. Despite the crazy premise, "From The Perspective of Meatloaf" is a sweet, whimsical look at the awkward attraction between Billy and Dee.

01:13 pm Gods and Monsters by KodiakkeMax (R)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: n/a
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: The Max Factor
Why this must be read:

It's good. It's very good. This author has been recc'd on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van before, here, here, and here, so talking about the quality of the writing and deft use of plot and character would be a mute point. KodiakkeMax is one fine writer and this fandom was blessed by her presence.

I guess I could talk about the plot and it's reflections on current events, or about how this is one of those perfect examples of using the sci-fi genre to illuminate the nastier sides of humanity. I could talk about all of those things, but I won't. I will tell you that this fic, when I was finished reading it, made me go "Whoa." Every time I read this I have the same "Whoa." reaction, because I find something I hadn't noticed before.

Hi! It's me, FBF, back in the driver's seat. Sorry about the wait for this first recc. I promise I'll do better for the rest of the month.

03:41 pm The Small Rain by Nell Howell (PG)
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nellhowell
Author Website: http://nell.ckrweb.net/
Why this must be read: It's difficult to give the reason why this story should be read without giving away too much. Suffice to say it's the only story I've read where I understand Bodie's choices...all of them. Who he loves, what he'll do for love and for his love are exquisitely shown with small gestures and an economy of words.

04:23 pm Tea and Small Talk by Baylor (Rated G)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr
Author Website: A Short Cut to Mushrooms
Why this must be read: Baylor has been rec'd before for other fics, but she deserves to be mentioned again. Tea and Small Talk is a short, fluffy story set well before the events of Fellowship. The writing is excellent, the characterization is spot on, and her ability to paint a scene of everyday Hobbit life makes me laugh out loud one minute, and melt the next.

It's short, it's sweet.

06:00 pm Little Jewish Lawyers Have Big Ears by ficklemuse (PG)
Fandom: The OC
Pairing: Ryan/Seth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ficklemuse
Author Website: None listed
Why this must be read:

This is a short but wonderfully written little piece. I love it as a whole and then find myself falling for it again as I notice some of the smaller details.

It's great for it's perspective of Sandy as he stubbles on the kids having a fight. Cute and heartbreaking.

Sandy Cohen wasn't inherently an eavesdropper.

Not usually. But when confronted with the six most feared words in any father's vocabulary he didn't have a choice but listen.

"My parents don't need to know."

Little Jewish Lawyers Have Big Ears

A companion part is here and this time it is Caleb eavesdropping. Yeah, eeep.

07:25 pm this is our grace by dana (NC17)
Fandom: ANGEL THE SERIES
Pairing:  Angel/Gunn.  (No, I'm not kidding)
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] danawoods
Author Website: Broken Symmetry
Why this must be read:
Ok, this is probably the strangest pairing of all time, and if not, it's definitely up there.  However, Dana is my favorite Gunn writer in the Jossverse, because she knows her boy inside and out, and it's obvious in this fic.  Angel and Gunn are perfectly in character, and Dana's able to portray their regret, grief, and need for comfort in a way that seems completely organic.

08:30 pm Drawing by elke tanzer (PG-13)
Fandom: HORNBLOWER
And continuing on with another variation on the theme of drawing, I bring you the following appropriately titled fic:

Pairing: Horatio/Archie
Author on LJ: elke_tanzer
Author Website: Elke's Archive
Why this must be read: Communication isn’t always an easy thing, especially when the parties are both men, and even more so when one of those parties is reserved and self-contained. Archie, who often acts as Horatio’s voice finds a rather unconventional means to illustrate what Horatio keeps near to his heart. Literally. It’s a lovely little interlude, sweet and whimsical, but there’s an underlying tenderness that gives it an unexpected richness.

11:07 pm Sibylla te theleis by Hth (PG)
Fandom:DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Vecchio/Stella (Fraser/Kowalski implied)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first
Author Website: Hth
Why this must be read:

Hth is one of my favorite authors. I debated for a long time over which Hth story to rec. In the end it came down to this one, or the classic Ray/Ray series, “What It is I See in You” (which you can find on her website and should definitely read as it was one of the first Ray/Ray fics ever and is still one of the best- ahem). I chose this one, finally, because it’s one of the best DS fics I’ve seen recently, and definitely my favorite story to come out of [livejournal.com profile] ds_seekritsanta this year.

Sibylla ti theleis (the title’s from T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land”, with quotes from it framing the different sections) takes the lovably random RayV/Stella ending from CoTW (a Florida bowling alley? Are you serious?) and puts a twist on it that’s just ingenious. Part Ray Vecchio character sketch, part portrait of a marriage, part day-in-the-life story with an appearance by Fraser and Kowalski - all brilliant. Heartbreakingly, realistically, gorgeously brilliant. I am in awe of Hth’s brain.

I think we are in rats' alley/ Where the dead men lost their bones. )

And yeah, it’s not a slash fic. And yeah, worse than that, it’s a het fic. But if you let that deter you from reading it, you are missing out. I can’t put it any clearer.
