The John Locke School of Education by Hackthis (PG)
Fandom: Lost
Pairing: Boone/various
Author on LJ:
hackthis
Author Website: Dysfuntional
Why this must be read:
Everyone has an opinion on Locke. Some people think he's good, some people think he's evil, and some people think he's somewhere in the ambiguous gray ground in-between. Personally, I firmly and cheerfully believe he's evil (and will tell just about anyone who will listen to me why) and cringe every time he seems to bring another character into his little cult.
The only person who ever makes me doubt my position (or at least feel guilty about it) at the front of the 'Locke is evil' bandwagon is
hackthis. There is something about the way she writes Locke that makes me both respect him and sympathize with him. She gives him a quiet dignity and an aura of wisdom that makes me go "Oh! That's why people love him!" It's not that I'm convinced that he's not evil, it's just that after reading this, I really wish I could think he was good.
She also does a fabulous job of making Boone a complex character struggling to find himself instead of the little yippy puppy dog that I tend to see him as. I love the conversations between Locke and Boone in this story. They are in character and perfect. I love the vivid imagery that makes the island come alive. And I love the way she gets into Boone's head and shows the world from his perspective and most importantly shows Locke from his perspective. This is just a beautifully written story that gives great insight into two characters and the dynamic between them.
