Hey there! I'm driving the Alias van for Small Fandom Month. It hasn't been recced here since 2005, but there are some stories written after that, as well as old ones not recced here. Getting a bit of a late start, so the first entry is Crossover Day!

Title: Mission Accomplished
Pairing: Sark/Shannon Rutherford (but it's mainly gen)
Length: 6,430 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] perdiccas
Author Website: On AOOO
Why this must be read: This is a fantastic double-to-triple cross ensemble story that uses the in media res structure of Alias (and Lost, actually) to tell a fun caper. At a fancy European ski resort, spoiled, sultry Shannon is Sark's mark when he's assigned to acquire a Rambaldi artifact in her possession. The entire Alias cast is perfectly in character, the plot twists are delightful, and Shannon is irrisistible. By the end, you wish she'd joined the CIA (or one of Sark's groups) instead of going to Australia.

This takes place before any Lost canon, so you don't need to know a single thing about that show to understand this.

26th-Feb-2011 10:11 pm Chain Reaction by elliotsmelliot (PG)
Fandom: LOST
Characters: Penny, Daniel
Length: 3,100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] elliotsmelliot
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

In my opinion, Penny Widmore was woefully underutilized, mostly in her role as a Widmore. She had the potential to play a large role in the fate of the island and all of the castaways that was never fully developed. [livejournal.com profile] elliotsmelliot seems to recognize what an intriguing character Penny was/could have been, and writes her well; her Daniel is also spot-on. Simply, as close to perfect as I consider LOST to be, there were many missed opportunities, and elliotsmelliot writes of one of these opportunities in a completely believable and intriguing manner that may just find a way into your personal canon as it has mine.

Pairing: Jack/Juliet
Length: ~1,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] squeakyboots
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

Of all the Jack/Juliet fic that came out of season 6's alt-universe, this one is my favorite. It's tightly-written and endearing, ends on a hopeful/thoughtful note, and actually makes mine (and a lot of others') least favorite character, Jack, intriguing and ultimately, likeable.

Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Juliet; Julian/Clementine
Length: 1,212 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] key_sama
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Be sure to read both fics because they are both wonderful one-shots dealing with ouiji boards and creepy real-world to island communications. Do you really need to know anything else to be convinced? I love the clever remix of a better known fic by a familiar author. This remix is just as good as the original, with the same creepy mood to it, but also a cute touch of humor-I love [livejournal.com profile] key_sama's sassy Clementine.

Character: Ben
Length: ~1000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] augrah

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] augrah writes Ben's story in the vein of "See Spot Run." The result is charming and funny, full of spot-on observations of Ben's (and others') story. This is overall a completely unique and delightful read.

15th-Feb-2011 01:42 am LOST/True Blood (PG-13)
Title: Home Is Where the Weird Is
Characters/Pairings: Miles Straume, James “Sawyer” Ford, Richard Alpert; True Blood ensemble, Jessica/Hoyt, one-sided Lafayette/Richard, mention of Richard/Jacob, hints of Sawyer/Tara
Length: 8,100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aurilly
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

I'll admit I'm not generally a fan of crossovers; there is too much exposition just to make the merging of two fandoms work and to fill in the background, often resulting in clunky stories. On the other hand, [livejournal.com profile] aurilly merges LOST and True Blood seemingly effortlessly and nearly seamlessly. She strikes a delicate balance and writes just enough to leave you satisfied yet wanting more. Each of the many characters from both fandoms are written true and with quirky humor. This story is a gem for fans of both television shows.

10th-Feb-2011 06:51 am No One Belongs Here More Than You by tia8206 (t)
Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Juliet; Sawyer/Juliet
Length: 237,673 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tia_no_one
Author Website: tia8206 on ff.net
Why this must be read:

Another post-incident fic in which Juliet survives the bomb blast only to be transported back to the 1920's. This story feels like it could be a near-effortless addition to the LOST canon or a brilliant spin-off; tia weaves in flashbacks and her own spin on island mysteries in a manner completely true to our favorite series. She introduces interesting, three-dimensional new characters and includes many old favorites, but ultimately, this is Juliet (and James') story. But you don't need to be a fan of this pairing to enjoy this story, because it truly is a riveting read regardless.

Length: 1,785 words

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] ozmissage goes a long way towards explaining and elaborating upon James' actions and motivation on the island during the sixth season. She provides insight into my favorite character that many of us fans felt was lacking during the final season of LOST. And simply, she writes one of the best Sawyer "voices" I've read.

Characters/Pairings: Miles; Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Jack; Sawyer/Juliet, Jack/Kate
Length: 4,059 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] valhalla37
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

Oodles of fic was written about what could have happened/what ultimately happened after 'The Incident.' This is one of the most unique takes on the fallout, and [livejournal.com profile] valhalla37's world is fully-formed, well thought out, replete with awesome details, and features a spot-on Miles voice. This dark horror piece ends on a hopeful note, and will stick with you long after you're done reading.

Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Desmond/Sayid
Length: 1137
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] angeldylan628
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] soapboxblues
Why this must be read: Desmond and Sayid are such a dream team, and this fic gives one of the most sensitive treatments of their dynamic (which you can read as friendship or more, as you choose) I've ever come across. There's such a sense of hope that Desmond gives to depressed Ocean 6 era Sayid.

Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Miles/Richard, Sawyer
Length: 3600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ozmissage
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read: This pairing is one of the best things to come out of the finale, and nobody writes them better than ozmissage. There's a perfect blend of angst, dry humour, and genuine feelings, the weirdness of Lost, and everyday life. Check out all of her Miles/Richard fic, but this one is the longest and the juiciest, with these two endearing misfits helping one another find their places back in the real world and falling for one another along the way.

Why this must be read: This fic nails everything that made this pairing so compelling in season one---the language issues, his uncontrollable need to help her---but also extends it into a season 4 AU that works beautifully. It's aching and raw and perfectly them.

Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Frank, Miles; Kate, Richard, Eloise, Sawyer, Claire
Length: 4300
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] valhalla37
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: Because Frank is great and every story should be from his POV. This is a beautiful story about what happens after they leave the island. They all have their secret pain, but the fact that Frank's the POV character take what would otherwise be a bit depressing and turns it into an engaging tale about people trying to figure out what to do next and how to move on with thier lives. The best parts are how he and Miles try to make things right with Dan's and Charlotte's parents.

Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Richard/Jacob
Length: 2000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] angeldylan628
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read: This is a heart-breakingly poignant imagining of what Jacob and Richard's relationship was like through the years, mostly from Jacob's point of view. It also explains why Jacob never told Richard anything of use. There's so much guilt and angst here, and so much caring. This story provides closure for them by having Hurley play medium. The writing is just amazing and tender and beautiful.

Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Kate/Sayid
Length: ~2000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aboutbunnies
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: This is a different take on the sideways that treats this world as a straight-up AU that doesn't have to end. Instead of going off with strangers, Kate and Sayid take their lives into their own hands, and go on the run together after Desmond releases them from prison. It's a great road trip story with perfect characterization that gets back to that great camaraderie/could-have-been-more dynamic they had in season one that brought out the best in both of them.

Hi! I'm aurilly, and I'll be reccing Lost again this December. Now that the series is over, I'll be reccing be a lot of post-finale fic, with lots of different pairings but also a lot of gen.

Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Kate/Sawyer/Claire
Length: 6100
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zelda_zee
Author Website:
Why this must be read: This is a poignant story of how the three remaining original characters try to deal with everything after they return to the real world. It's really hard to make me get into OT3 relationships, but this one works better than any other I've read, where all three of them need this for very different reasons. The Kate in this story is one of the best version of Kate I've ever read, and the treatment of crazy Claire's rehabilitation is very sensitively and believably done.

Fandoms: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Walt and Shannon
Length: 1260 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fic_flail
Why this must be read: This is a really unique look at something that totally might have been canon. Walt was a great observer at the camp, and his crush on Shannon in this fic is adorable and completely believable. Toestastegood has really nailed the little-boy POV voice, with the random things about romance that a little boy might and might not have gleaned from television or watching adults interact.

Excerpt:
When he asked Shannon why she was folding clothes, she said she was 'anal'. Walt didn't quite understand what she meant by that; he knew it had something to do with your ass, because the guys back at school would always laugh and make jokes about it, and because Bobby Ferguson had once drawn over the word 'annual' and the teacher had yelled at him for about eight hours straight; it had been pretty cool – and he didn't get what that had to do with folding clothes, so he'd just fallen quiet and nodded.

Fandoms: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Ensemble
Length: 6938 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hitlikehammers
Why this must be read: Because it's absolutely the best reset fic out there. Everyone is in it, and she manages the insane task of writing a story that sounds chipper and sweet throughout, but is actually one of the darkest things I've ever read in this fandom. Everything that's "nice" is actually tragic, you're informed in roundabout ways of people's demises, the happy relationship that springs up is actually the most wrong thing possible, etc. There aren't words for how brilliant this is. Just read it.

Excerpt:
“Hey,” the man says, and his is the kind of voice that your best friend in high school had - that casual, rough sort of sound that blends into the background and makes your chest feel buoyant.

Kate never had a best friend in high school.

24th-Dec-2009 11:17 am There's Always a Duckie by ozmissage (PG13)
Fandoms: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Miles/Juliet (one-sided)
Length: 1340 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ozmissage
Why this must be read: Miles is such a fun, snarky, real character, and ozmissage writes some of the best Miles characterization out there. His hopeless crush on Juliet during the early days of the Left-Behinders time in Dharmaville is so believable and this story would be a little bit sad if it weren't for the fantastically entertaining and sarcastic POV voice. Juliet is also incredible in this, showing that playful, joking side of herself we got to see every so often. If you want a laugh and a smile, this is the fic to do it.

Excerpt:
Miles Straume does not fall in love. He has sex, he has lots of sex in fact. And sometimes he has sex with the same girl more than once. But he doesn’t have relationships. He doesn’t buy flowers or write fucking love poems and he sure as hell wouldn’t stand outside of any chick’s window holding a boom box over his head blasting a crappy pop ballad. Mostly, because who the hell would want a chick who was that into Peter Gabriel anyway?

: 2700 words

Why this must be read: After the season five finale presented the possibility of a ‘reset’ in which the plane never crashed, a bunch of great fics have been written with this premise. This is one of my favorites. Each character is handled delicately and realistically. Most people find ways to meet in the real world that mirror the interactions that helped them bond on the island, but there are also sad dead ends for other characters, and moments of unrealized promise for yet others. My favorite bits include the Miles+Hurley friendship and Juliet and Sun still meeting.

Excerpt: “I’ve had my eye on you for quite some time, John. Do you mind if I call you, John?”

John shakes his head slowly and eyes the man’s satchel, suddenly wondering if it contains objects for a test. “Have we met before?”

"Many times, John. Many times.”

Fandoms: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Jacob and ensemble
Length: 2520 words
Author on LJ: tellshannon815
Why this must be read: Because Jacob is awesome, and just because some of the Losties died before the end of season 5 doesn't mean that they didn't deserve a Jacob visit, too. This story does a fantastic job of imagining which moments Jacob would have chosen in the characters' lives and what he would have said had he visited some of our dearly departed characters. And just as he did in the visits we saw in teh season 5 finale, he subtly guides the characters towards their destinies on the island.

Excerpt:
"Well, if the boat's going to upset you that much," Jacob said, "maybe you should let it go, give it to somebody who's gonna use it."

15th-Dec-2009 02:02 pm A Touch of Infinity by janie_tangerine (R)
Fandoms: LOST/HEROES
Characters/Pairing: AdamMonroe, Richard Alpert, Jacob; Richard/Adam
Length: 10,100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] janie_tangerine
Author Website: Masterlists
Why this must be read: Only with Lost and Heroes can you have a 19th century shipwreck adventure fic that is neither AU nor crack! This absolutely BRILLIANT fic places Adam Monroe on the Black Rock, along with Richard, and together, they reach the island and meet Jacob. You don't need to know anything about Heroes except that Adam was born in about 1650, is something of a mercenary, and that his superpower is cellular regeneration---meaning he heals from any wound, never ages, and will never die. Janie does an amazing job of theorizing what is going on in the Lost mythology (it makes sense!), and it's a blast watching Adam and Richard slowly piece it together and also experience some of those key season 1 WTF moments (like meeting the monster and seeing a polar bear, etc.). In addition to keeping the action and mystery going, the relationships she builds between the three main characters are distinct and beautiful. And then, just for an extra stroke of brilliance, she finds a way to make Jacob responsible for the motivations behind Adam's canon storyline that takes place a century later.

Excerpt:
When he wakes up, Adam is lying on a beach, the waves still touching his feet. The sun creeps through his eyelids, forcing them open; Adam blinks and takes a look around. The sand is almost white and soft under his fingertips, and in front of him there’s a luxurious, green jungle. When he turns to his left he sees Alpert, covered in sand and still passed out but breathing more or less steadily, and Adam figures it’s ok, all things considered.

Then he starts noticing that something is very, very strange. And not the usual kind of strange.

Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Kate and Sayid
Length: 1793 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] toestastegood
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] fic_flail
Why this must be read: I think this is one of the best duos on the whole show and they bring out the best in each other---they are fierce and free of the drama that comes from their other romantic entanglements. This story, which takes place during the time when everyone was suspicious of Juliet's intrusion in their camp, shows that really well; they're such good partners and confidantes. The story sticks to canon (meaning, it doesn't put them together or anything) but just like on the show, you come away with the feeling of an opportunity lost, because this pairing would have been amazing. Toestastegood has done a perfect characterization of both of them.

Excerpt:
"I'm not trying to 'deal' with anything."

Sayid reasons, after she's left, that that is precisely her problem.

Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Ensemble
Length: 3644 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] devdev1

Why this must be read: In a fascinating variation of ‘reset’ fic, this story is a chilling look at what might have happened had the survivors been rescued a few days after the crash, but sworn to silence about what had happened. Some characters find happy endings, but others find even more tragic ones than the ones they faced on the show. A few of the same pairings emerge, fleetingly, others never had a chance to happen, but some new ones do, too. The writing is gorgeous and she manages to capture each character’s set of issues perfectly.

Excerpt:
“We weren’t supposed to leave.”

Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairing: Sawyer/Sayid
Length: 14,129 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zelda_zee
Author Website: Masterlist
Why this must be read: Here’s this month’s porn rec, and I picked the most EPIC one that I have bookmarked---look at that wordcount! [livejournal.com profile] zelda_zee is this fandom’s go-to porn writer, but what makes her writing so great is her fabulous imagery, her perfect characterization, and the realism that she imbues into even the nuttiest plots. The sex here is jaw-droppingly hot… and just keeps going in a way that makes the reader feel just as deliciously out of control as Sayid. However, although this fic is technically just PWP---it’s about sex pollen, for heaven’s sake---she’s so good that it ends up being quite a lovely comment on Sawyer and Sayid’s relationship, and the ending is fantastic.

Excerpt:
Anyway, the guy was better company than pretty much anyone else back at the beach, so he guessed if he was going to be lost with someone he could do worse. Not a chatterbox, that was for sure. Only talked when he actually had something to say. Sawyer, who made it a practice to speak as often as possible but most particularly when he had nothing to say, appreciated that economy in others.

Why this must be read: Lost fic that theorizes is great, and this is one of the best "let's try to explain it"stories I've ever read. We know so little about Richard and Jacob's relationship that seems to have spanned at least a century. This beautifully written story provides a fascinating background that is completely believable---how Jacob made Richard immortal, what it was like for Richard to lead with Ben, how Jacob felt about Alex's storyline. But most importantly, it's great to watch how Richard grows along with his relationship with Jacob. The tone is also a perfect blend of creepy and beautiful... just like the island.

Characters: Desmond
Length: 3835 words

Author Website: Masterlist
Why this must be read: This gorgeously written and atmospheric fic details the last month or so of Desmond’s solitude in the hatch and his slow descent into the near-madness that we saw when the crash survivors first opened the hatch. It is a heartbreaking look at what it’s like to be at the end of one’s tether, all alone, losing one’s mind, and to make matters worse, a slave to a button that doesn’t allow you to sleep. The numbers are a big part of Lost mythology and this story almost makes them into a character.
