Why this must be read: I'll cop to a tiny bias when it comes to AMJ's stories since she's one of my dearest friends. But I doubt, after having read this story, that anyone will fault me for having a high appreciation for her quality writing.

As [livejournal.com profile] hyperfocused said last month, the tendency of people writing Sports Night crossovers is to join characters from that show with those from The West Wing. If nothing else, the Sorkin style of each makes for a good match, generally speaking, and a plausible set-up like Anna-Maria's helps it work even better. What makes her story special, though, is how strong her grasp on the worlds of each series is and how finely wrought the combined world of "Echoes." The characters and scenes are vibrantly clear, and the way those scenes fit together mirrors the transitional pattern of both series.

There isn't a single misstep in terms of detail, style, or characterization -- which is really saying something, considering how large the combined cast is. "Echoes" is witty and smart. It's utterly believable and real. The central pairing works better than you might think, and there are a couple great nods to the similarities between the characters and between their relationships with each other. The story is long, but you won't notice; you'll be too involved. It's also very intricately woven, tightly packed, and powerfully engaging. I could keep blathering on, but really? I just think it's perfect. Go. Read. Adore.
