Chess for Losers by Sunshiner (PG-13)

Why this must be read:

Sunshiner is one of those authors who might not have quantity, but she sure has quality. This piece is one of her finest. One of the most underused Bad Guys in all of scifi are the point in this fic. That's right, the Nebari. The fic takes place sometime later and John has been beaten down by the life he's led. He's tired and worn out but can't see doing anything else. There is war, there is love, there is fighting and there is the end that will make you go back and re-read the whole thing. The betaing of this story produced one of my favorite quotes: "That story was smarter than me." It's a tangled fic of ideas and thoughts, yet, once you get it, it all makes sense. I've read this many times and I still find something new.

When no one was looking, his hands shook. The tremor became more pronounced when he was tired or stressed, vibrating so hard he could feel it all the way down to his feet. Harvey could control it, though. He could keep the weakness invisible and fine-tune motor functions, sliding along nerve impulses and synapses, exerting neural willpower over tendons and muscles. Harvey eased the aches and pains of a body overly used and too often abused.

The neural clone could only do so much, though. John realized long ago he needed to stop running with the big dogs and spend more time on the porch, not sloshing through filthy sewer systems or scaling untrustworthy staircases in buildings that should have fallen down cycles ago.

But then he'd miss the glamour. The basketball shoe endorsements.

Go read and don't forget to feed the author.
