Being There by Sunhawk (R)

Hi! My name's Megan, and I'll be your Gundam Wing small fandom reccer this month. The previous fandom summary by [livejournal.com profile] ari_ is here.

Fandom: GUNDAM WING
Pairing: Duo/Heero (2+1)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sunhawk16
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Because it's Sunhawk!

However... most jobs did require a whole lot of crap we didn't know a thing about. Balance a checkbook? What the hell is a checkbook? Driver's license? What do I need a license for; I'm a fucking Gundam pilot. We had done things for so long for the results, damn the laws and the rules and polite society, that we didn't know how to deal with all the red tape and paperwork and... the damn tedium. All of it complicated by our notoriety and the stigma attached to our names. Complicated by the fact that a car backfiring in the street would send us diving for cover. Yeah sure; shall I calculate the necessary amount of explosives to remove table number four from the dining room without scorching the floor, and would you like fries with that?

Sunhawk does her stories in first person POV, which if you've been around any fandom, you know that it can be tricky. However, her language is so perfect for the pilots, especially Duo, who Being There is seen from. It's snarky, interesting, and you never get the feeling that it's written by some hyper fan girl. Many people actually think that she's a guy at first, that's how good her POVs are.

Gushing aside, if you're one of those people who don't watch anime because they're cartoons... this story might change your mind, just a little. In this story, they're people, not two-dimensional characters. It shows Heero and Duo struggling to fit in with "polite society" after the series, when for most of their lives they've been above and beyond the rules.

If you liked this story, then I recommend you read her other stories. She tends to write in very long, involved arcs that I don't think will ever be completely finished. I highly recommend the Ion Arc.

I really, really love that fic, too. Great rec, but you forgot to mention the angst! The glorious, glorious angst...
