Why this must be read: UNCLE fans often say that Napoleon and Illya would do anything for each other. Well, this story is all about what Napoleon would do if he had to, to keep Illya safe, to keep him alive. And it's a story of betrayal and loyalty and what, in the final analysis, is the most important thing in both their lives.
Mark and April also play a part; I know some fans don't particularly care for these two but I do (as long as neither is a love interest.) There's a scene between Mark and Napoleon, more of a remembering, actually, that I find myself rereading all the time, so I can't imagine this story without him, at least.
Given the times, I can readily imagine the scenario of this story being played out. It's not how I'd want Napoleon and Illya's "final" affair to end but it would certainly be more than possible. And Elfin does a fantastic job of getting across both men's feelings to what has been done, not just to, but for them.
