Jason and Me, by David Hines (R)

Why this must be read:
When Stephanie Brown first became Robin, there was a lot of meta both in canon and in the fandom about her similarities to Jason Todd, known to all as the Robin Who Died. This fic explores those similarities further, and explores Steph's character when she put on the suit. It gets inside Steph's head and the heads of everyone in the Batfamily, who see all the ways she is just like Jason, and the ways that could (and, ultimately, does) lead to her death. It's all about what it means to be Robin, the history, the pain and the love behind that one suit.
I hadn't even heard of Stephanie, or most of the Batfamily for that matter, when I first read this fic, but it made me fall in love with her. The ccomics dealing with Stephanie-as-Robin ended up being pretty awful, and every time I read this fic I wish that this were canon. It can also act as a handy introduction to all the members of the Batfamily, as Stephanie visits each one asking about Jason.
The best part is, I get to wear the suit.
The first time I put it on, I just stare at myself in the mirror. For an *hour.* I still can't believe it. Dick made it famous. Tim made it his own. And now it's mine.
Jason died in it, but that's got nothing to do with me.

Aside from the fact that the story is impressively insightful about two fantastic characters who got unfairly fucked over by the Powers That Be at DC, this story shows one of the DC fandom's greatest strength: as slashy and purely demented as it gets, we also have some truly awesome gen.
*coughs and mumbles*

See, yeah--I was bitching at

how I was torn between reccing really awesome gen next, or really awesome porn, because our fandom just has so much of each. What a quandary!
*laughs* Rec both?
