All the Places by Ambress (PG 13)

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Unfolding Like a Flower ... Stories by Ambress

Why this must be read:

Ambress is a great storyteller. That's really it, in a nutshell. She writes eloquent, descriptive prose with great characterizations of Mulder and Scully, and to that mix she adds a dash of style that is totally her own.

This small jewel of a story begins in the immediate aftermath of Biogenesis, when Mulder, who has been overwhelmed by his sudden capacity to read minds, is still locked up in a padded cell. The simple storyline is this: Scully comes to get him out and he can internally hear and feel every bit of it. However, any summary of mine will only reduce what is an excellent story, so just go ahead and read it, because if I try to excerpt it? I'll just end up copying and pasting the entire thing.

But ... did I mention that it's funny as well as poignant? Here's Mulder, ruminating on the loss of hearing Scully's every thought:

He wanted that feeling back. He wanted more
Scully within him, expanding like a starry night. Now
he knew how junkies felt. One hit and he was a slave.
He was jonesing uncontrollably for the narcotic--
Scullycet, Scullyvan--whatever you wanted to call it.
The shit was chronic. He needed it like he needed salt
in his food. Without it, everything was tasteless.
