Why this must be read:
Because being part of the Rebel Alliance is a high-pressure situation, and living under the threat of death leads to drinking, singing and sex.
Set between ANH and ESB this fic gives a great depiction of Leia, with a spot-on voice. She's a diplomat and a leader of the Rebellion, but she's also a young woman who wants to take an evening out to relax. This shows an evening of bonding over drinks with one of the more street-level members of the Alliance - pilot, Wedge Antilles, who has more than a little in common with another charming Corellian pilot.
"Where are you from?"
"Corellia."
Of course.
"Tell me," she said conversationally, "are all Corellians completely exasperating and suicidally heroic?"
He blinked. "Uh-"
"I ask because the Rebel Alliance is lousy with you: gamblers, pirates, smugglers, all-around scoundrels. There seems to be some sort of pattern."
"My parents ran a refueling station."
"Oh." So. Not a pattern, then.
