"You Can't Make Texas Bar Punch in New York," by Julian Lee (PG-13)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dana Whitaker/Natalie Hurley
Author on LJ: I don't know if she's even on LJ. If anyone knows her username, let me know and I'll add it here.
Author Website: The Thwarted Invasion: Julian Lee's Fanfiction with a Grudge
Why this must be read: Like I said in my previous rec, Natalie/Dana fics are pretty rare; this is another valuable find, although their relationship is only one tiny piece of the larger picture. "Texas Bar Punch" is engaging, as well as somehow both bittersweet and hopeful. It shows the reader how the lives of all the significant Sports Night players have evolved since the demise of the fictional series.
The dialogue is all in character. You'll get a multi-faceted look into all the characters both through that dialogue and through the unspoken narrative. For most of the story, things are kept purposefully light between Dana and Natalie as well as between the other characters; still, there's something much more interesting and deep beneath the surface, and glimpses of that really focus the story.
They all have issues with where they've gone and what they've become. "Texas Bar Punch" lets readers in on how the characters' relationships have shifted and the comparative value of change. It's about the end of the show they made together, but it's also about the beginnings of their new lives. Oh, and if you like this story, stick around; all of Julian's SN fics are worth your time.
