Suspension by Mary (R)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Jason/Bruce
Author on LJ:
monkeycrackmary
Author Website: Ink Stigmata
Why this must be read:
We love Mary's obsession with dead Robins, oh yes we do. Because that obsession gives us wonderful stories like this one, among others. I had a really hard time choosing which of Mary's stories to rec, but I finally decided on this one, because this story sums up what I love about Jason, and what I love about Bruce/Jason, better than anything else I've read.
Canon never gave us very good material when it came to Jason. His time as Robin was rushed and not very well-written, and they killed him off before things could get interesting. I much prefer Mary's version of how things went and who Jason was. She fleshes out Jason, gives us all the details of who he is and who he is to Bruce. I love this Jason so much, and it feels so *right* that he is Robin, that he should fight next to Batman. The story is bittersweet if you know what's inevitably coming for the characters, but it still leaves me feeling happy every time I read it.
"It was reckless."
"You're nuts. It was nothing."
"You were foolhardy, and I expect better of you."
"Yeah, well, I guess that makes you the sucker, then," Jason snipes. He's getting better at this kind of argument. When he was a kid, his parents would scream and swear and slam doors at each other and then be fine within the half-hour. With Bruce, it's a simmer. A big pot full of all kinds of crap and the heat's always, always on.
