Out for Number One by Apathy (PG-13)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: References to Braca/Grayza and Braca/OFC
Author on LJ:
apathocles Fic Journal:
lemon_curry
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:
I freely admit, I have a weakness for the "Five things that never happened to..." genre. Apathy has distinguished herself as one of the masters of this genre for Farscape, along with Astrogirl and Cofax. In fact she's already been rec'd here for her Five Things that Never Happened to Chiana, Shades Of Grey. Here she tackles a slightly more difficult subject matter: everybody's favorite quintessential Peacekeeper Miklo Braca.
Braca is deucedly difficult to write, especially Five Things, because so very little is known about his history. He has a very distinct and consistent personality and motivations, but we're given only hints and teases of how he got that way. Thus instead of the usual Five Things trope of going through his history point by point and choosing turning points that could have gone differently, Apathy presents a set of extraordinary situations and puts Braca in them, just being Braca. The result is five vignettes that ring frighteningly true - things Braca never did, but very easily could have, each highlighting a facet of his personality.
Go, read, and reward loyal service and ruthless cunning with a nice review.

The Emperor comes to a standstill, and takes full advantage of the opportunity to lean in close, his repulsive Scarran features adding to Braca's discomfort.
"I'm still not sure whether I should believe you."
Calm. Of course Staleek's testing him. He would be doing the same thing.
"I have told you everything, and I have told it truthfully. Whether you choose to believe it or not is entirely up to you."
Staleek takes a step backwards, and examines the data chip in his hand.
"My techs have verified your claims about what this contains. I merely wish to be certain that you are giving us absolutely everything you have." The Emperor bares his teeth, and it is not an attractive sight.
"You have my word."
"For what that's worth."
