Doubt and Awakening by Te (15+)

Greetings to all of you, puny earthlings.

My name is [livejournal.com profile] cccarioca and I shall be your driver for July for the DC Comics fandom. Well-met! If there are some among you who are still thinking "DC? Comics? What's that fandom again?", I shall sneer haughtily at you and then point you to [livejournal.com profile] ficbyzee's excellent fandom overview.

To my greatest despair, my illustrious predecessor also happened to have remarkable instinct for the good stuff, so if you haven't read what she recced, what are you waiting for? It's all certified Delicious Crack.

And now, I do believe I shall get started. For my first rec of the month, I bring you some fabulously creepy gen, because it so happens that for DC comics fans, unhealthy mentoring relationships is love.

Why this must be read: one of my favorite things about this fandom is how intense some of the characters are. Marvel has loads of angst, but none of the sheer intensity that can be found here. And the two characters in this fic especially are so fantastically intense.

It might seem strange to see a female martial artist named after a male hindu deity, but once you know Lady Shiva, you see just how much the name suits her. She truly is become death, shatterer of worlds. Lady Shiva is a bogeyman in the DC verse. She's a mere human that has metas running away screaming in terror, and with good reason. She's completely in love with death and it makes her practically unstoppable.

Tim Drake is at once the best and the worst of Batman's Robins, which comes from the fact that he's probably the only one among the various Robins with what it takes to some day become Batman, which doesn't say much about his mental health. And though he's hardly the most physically impressive, he is the first (and so far only) Robin that Shiva ever took an interest in. She was in fact interested enough in him to teach him and even try to seduce him away from Batman. They parted ways, but Shiva retains a marked fondness for him to this day and the staff Tim fights with was a gift from her.

I won't bother introducing Te, because at this point, pretty much everyone who's been in fandom for a little while instantly recognizes the name. You'll certainly see her recced often in this fandom. This fic stands out among her fics, because these are two of her favorite characters and it shows.

Here's a little sample to whet your appetite ...

He knows the precise amount of tension he would have to keep in his fingers, the exact angle of his elbow, and the rather surprising slack he'd need to have in his palm in order to stop the flow of blood to the brain of strong, healthy man with one...

You couldn't even call something like that a 'strike.' It's a touch, and...

And it's been days, now. Days of learning the way Shiva laughs when she knows he's only still on the ground because he's hoping to steal more time to recover -- regroup -- before rising again, and the way the skin beneath her eyes tightens when he pulls a blow she thinks he should've followed through on.

Please just put (15+) or equivalent in the subject line without extra words. There are limited character spaces available in the memories function. Thanks!
