Why this must be read:

Did you know there was another Hockey AU (or more of an AR) out there? Another delightful and fun hockey AU? In this story only Ray Kowalski's life is different- it diverged during the infamous bank robbery incident when he was a kid and instead of being motivated to become a cop he is motivated to play hockey. And after a decade of playing he meets a certain Mountie through teammate Mark Smithbauer and the rest is history.

I like how this story takes the time to show what Ray has gone through before he meets Fraser and how that both prepares him but also scars him. Ray is still undone by love. I love Ray's rapid-fire thoughts, wise mouth, and fast fist because it rings true, only now his bad guys are on the other teams and all his poetry is hockey metaphors.

I read the paper while I waited -- not because I was a freak or anything, but because maybe I didn't want to think about my pants or the bank anymore. At least not until I gave my statement. I bypassed the regular news sections, and read the sports section -- every line, every word. That's when the second part of my epiphany hit:

I could be Stan Mikita.

5'9", 169 pounds, Czech-born center -- he could kick your ass. And he did, a lot of it, too, until his daughter asked why he always sat in a box by himself. Then it was all, he could kick your ass, he just wasn't gonna, because he was better than that. I could be Stan Mikita.

So when I got home, I changed my pants, picked up the phone, and asked my cousin if I could have his old hockey equipment
