This is my last rec as crack_van driver, and now I know that the van is hanging up its wheels and retiring for good I wish I could rec a fic that holds all of due South. But then I couldn't think of one, because I suppose the whole point of fanfic is that everyone picks up different details, and that even though we keep telling the same stories with the same characters, they aren't really the same at all. There isn't just one post CoTW story to tell; there isn't just one version of RayK and Fraser; it isn't necessarily RayK and Fraser at all - shout out to the rest of the due South fleet of ships! I am sorry I haven't managed to rec a RayV story, or a Ray/Ray story, or a Fraser/Inspector Thatcher story.

So I don't think I have one perfect story with everything in it to end with, and probably a story like that doesn't exist and wouldn't make any sense if it did. Every iteration is different and the fandom hasn't run out of stories yet. I'm very sad to see the end of crack_van, but the due South fandom is still here and still creating and I'm sure we'll go on reccing fic somewhere else for many years to come. Fandom moves to different places but it keeps on going.

On which note, here's my rec:

Fandom: due South
Characters: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 2,640 words
Author website: http://www.trickster.org/res/
Author on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Resonant
Why this must be read:

Well. Let's be honest - because Fraser getting tied up presses ALL my buttons. Those of you who know me from Tumblr will be rolling your eyes about now, muttering "she just COULDN'T leave it alone, could she?" because this is maybe a Thing I talk about from time to time a lot. Since there is no one story that has everything great about due South in it, I'm reccing this one because it's a fandom classic and because I still don't understand why submissive!Fraser is such a fascinating thing to me. And believe me, I've thought about it A LOT. I think this fic picks up a lot of why I find the character so interesting: at first glance he's hyper masculine - tall and good looking and physically strong and capable and independent and he throws knives and has a wolf - he's a wilderness survivor and a lone wolf and all those things that scream RUGGED and MANLY. And then, there's how he behaves. He's polite, and restrained and modest and passive aggressive and he has good old-fashioned posture and he doesn't swear and he's uncomfortable with sexual attention and he doesn't flirt or drink and he dips his head and hides behind his hat and somebody else is always driving and has to take him home, and think they need to look after him when actually they probably don't, and he spends a whole episode very convincingly and respectfully in drag and at the beginning of this fic he's cooking and it's called Homemaking - do you see where I'm going with this? Fraser sometimes behaves like a big strong man and sometimes he behaves like a lady (and by that I mean, how we typically see "big strong man" and "lady" presented on screen, not necessarily how the majority of men and women actually DO behave) and all of that adds up to me finding him taking a sexually submissive role within the parameters of a relationship of equals totally fascinating. And let's not examine any more closely than that why this is a Thing I like, in case we don't like the answer.

Characters: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, past Benton Fraser/Ray Vecchio
Length: 1,444 words
Author on LJ: http://hth-the-first.livejournal.com/
Author on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Hth
Why this must be read:

This is everything I look for in fanfic. A detail that takes you right to the heart of a character (two characters, in fact) and builds a whole life of loneliness around a throwaway detail because it's just that well-observed and psychologically convincing. And a bit of a knife in the heart at the same time - I wouldn't call this angst, exactly, but it's not happy, either. I need another word for loneliness so as not to repeat myself, but since there isn't one I'll just say that this bleeds loneliness. From RayK, ("Ray can't tell if the wildness in his voice is anger or sadness or -- or whatever you call that, that thing that you feel when your wife leaves you and you're completely alone and blaming yourself"), from Fraser, just - this picks a thread that illuminates everything important about Fraser and RayK. Need; jealousy; vulnerability; wanting to know somebody and for them to know you. Every word is poignant and perfect and I am once again piling up the adjectives so you should just read the fic and then I'll stop.

27th-Nov-2013 02:44 pm Five Confessions, by Kindkit (explicit)
Fandom: due South
Characters: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 4,570 words
Author on LJ: http://kindkit.livejournal.com/
Author on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/users/kindkit
Why this must be read:

I love post CoTW fic. I love first time post CoTW fic, I love established relationship post CoTW fic, I love are we actually in a relationship if we are in different countries? post CoTW fic. And while due South is my happy place, I especially love fic that acknowledges that even though they obviously, indisputably, luminously love each other these two people might find it difficult to be in a relationship, even more so if they are doing it long-distance. There are practical obstacles and emotional obstacles for them to cope with, and these are different from the sort of challenges they were so good at facing as cop partners.

So I love this fic because it looks at all that, and steers them through to a convincing happy ending. Warning: it's an infidelity fic, and I know not everybody wants to read that. But this one deals with real, messy, human emotions. Ray is lonely and he makes a mistake and he suffers for it, and this story is how he deals with that and how he tries to make it right. It's nuanced and realistic, and even though we can't (and aren't supposed to) condone what he did, we can understand and empathise with how it came to happen, and the choices he makes later to try to not hurt Fraser.

So yes there's some angst here, but it finishes in a happy place. That's what I love best - fic that acknowledges real world problems, and then solves them convincingly, so that I can whole-heartedly believe that Ray and Fraser are real and they sledded off into that sunrise and lived happily ever after. (I told you, it's a coping strategy, ok?)

Fandom: due South
Characters: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: Medium (no wordcount given)
Author on LJ: http://kaneko.livejournal.com/
Author on AO3:http://archiveofourown.org/users/Kaneko
Why this must be read:

Because it's so subtle and low-key and yet you know all along what Fraser's feeling, why he doesn't go to that store, why he wants a car, why he has a drink. I hope it doesn't sound like faint praise to say it's a beautiful example of show, don't tell - we see what Fraser does, and it's so well observed we don't need to be told why he's doing it. There's a background hum of lonely longing to this fic that fits exactly with the way we see Fraser gazing at Ray, and it gets perfectly resolved in a way we regrettably don't (quite) see in canon.

Plus, immaculately in-character drunk!Fraser! I've really got a terrible weakness for Fraser with his defences down. Of course there are plenty of traumatic life events that can deliver, but what I like best is the mundane, everyday things that might get him to drop his guard and that this fic does so well.

21st-Nov-2013 10:43 pm This is a story that I tell myself, by Spuffyduds (explicit)
Fandom: due South
Characters: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 3,147 words
Author on LJ: http://spuffyduds.livejournal.com/
Author on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/users/spuffyduds
Why this must be read: Because you will never read more perfect angst than this.

It was hard to choose which [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds story to rec, but as I personally am incapable of writing anything other than schmaltzy happy endings (look, it's a coping mechanism, ok? I told you this already) I especially admire writers who can lay on the angst this effectively. And plausibly - if it isn't at least a little bit plausible, it doesn't stay with you, but this one? Whoa, is it ever plausible. Horribly, canon-perfectly plausible. I choose not to believe it because then I might cry - Ray and Fraser sled off into that sunrise and live happily ever after GODDAMMIT la la la I can't hear you if you try to tell me otherwise. But it's so heartbreakingly poignant and in character, and perfectly, brilliantly, insightfully, word-perfectly written (you will not find a heinous string of adjectives like THAT in this fic, that's for damn sure) that I had to share it here. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, OK? DON'T COME CRYING TO ME ABOUT HOW SAD THIS FIC IS.

(oh and I'm only allowed to rec one story but really you should read everything by Spuffyduds. Probably you have done already, but why don't you go and read it again, just to be on the safe side? I mean be honest, were you REALLY going to get anything done this evening anyway if you're here on LJ checking on the crack_van recs? Of course you weren't. And that's what I'm here for, to help you waste time in the best possible way!)

Why this must be read:

Because it's the perfect blend of angst and realistic happy ending, set post CoTW and including RayV and Stella's wedding, where there is poor communication and pining and making each other unhappy and not talking about it. Because sometimes RayK an Fraser manage to talk about things in canon, but then there is everything that goes unsaid that you just know could screw things up when you have to make big decisions about which country to live in and making a commitment to someone and just HOW DO YOU HUMAN. And, appropriately enough for a story about not talking about things, the writing is beautifully subtle and understated and lets you see all this without telling you everything.

Oh and it contains this line: "Scotch, neat, in as big a glass as you can give me without me looking like the jilted ex-husband." which is surely worth the admission price on its own?

14th-Nov-2013 12:44 am Come with me, by Zabira (teen)
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Victoria Metcalfe
Length: 10,524 words
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/users/zabira
Why this must be read:

Because it is such an insightful look Victoria, and her feelings for Fraser and how the circumstances of their lives meant nothing good could ever come of that meeting at Fortitude Pass. Victoria's Secret gave us his perspective but very little of hers, and this fills in some gaps about her life in a way I find totally convincing. Here they are two people who do love each other, but by the time they meet it's already too late for a happy ending. A police officer and an armed robber? How was that EVER going to end well? So they have this intense connection, and all they can do with it is hurt each other. She's the villain of the episodes (albeit a nuanced one) but here we get a glimpse of Fraser maybe not being his best self with a vulnerable woman - he's so blown away by his reaction to her that he loses sight of where the balance of power lies between them. It reminds me of that thing Paul Haggis said, that they didn't consummate their relationship at Fortitude Pass: "No, I've always believed that their connection was much deeper than that. Which made Fraser's betrayal that much worse -- resulting in his fear of women. He couldn't face what he did, and that shame manifested itself as fear -- which we all took to be comic -- but was, in truth, paralyzing." (It is the subject of another, quite different post, how that also reads as queer, and we needn't all ascribe to Paul Haggis's view, but it casts plenty of scenes in quite a different light, doesn't it?)

I love this glimpse of a darker side of Fraser
through Victoria's eyes. It doesn't change who he fundamentally is, but he CAN make mistakes like anybody else and this fic makes me sympathise with Victoria and love him more both at the same time.

Why this must be read:

Because it's some of the best porn with feelings you're likely to come across (ha ha do you see what I did there? God I'm hilarious) even if you sail the internet for the rest of your life. Which is a thing I totally recommend, but just in case RL gets in the way, start with this fic. It's got that perfect blend of hotness and underlying love, the emotional vulnerability that goes with really letting go with someone and that is so perfectly Ray and Fraser. You know that joke where a PWP is an "erotic character study"? This fic absolutely and unironically deserves that title, because this isn't just sex for the sake of sex (not that that would be a bad thing), it's sex as a way of connecting with one other person and trusting them completely.

Excuse me I'm making myself emotional on the internet about great sex. Just count yourselves lucky I have not been drinking becausee this is when the TMI comes out and nobody wants that.

Why this must be read:

Let me tell you a cautionary tale about Spic and Span.

You know that awkward moment when you're half idly reading some fanfic on your phone, half paying attention to a conversation with your mother in law about the economic crisis in Spain (I have small children, and if nothing else I can multi-task in two languages like a BOSS), when suddenly the fic you are reading turns out to be scorchingly, brain-meltingly hot?

These are the circumstances under which I discovered this fic. Possibly I should have read the description first, which is "It involves a giant, sparkly blue dildo. And Fraser's ass." But I didn't. I just jumped right in there, and once I'd started I could hardly stop reading and wait for a more appropriate moment, could I? Instead I had to take my jumper off and give thanks for being a girl that there was no outward physical sign of what I'd just read.

So. Read wisely. I make these mistakes so you don't have to.

Mizface 's Ch-ch-changes is the MOST ADORABLE zombie story on the face of the internet. ADORABLE. Ray and Ray are zombie buddies and I want to hug them both. And Fraser, is, well, Fraser, and he and RayK do what they do best, which is be weird and fall in love with each other. JUST GO READ IT OKAY, IT WILL MAKE YOU SO HAPPY.

The author’s summary for this fic is, “Ray goes to Ange after Fraser's story telling doesn't save the day.” Something goes wrong during a case and Ray doesn’t know what to do. Why this vid kicks ass:

Scribe made this vid for this year's DS/C6D Big Bang, so it's brand new. It's an amazingly powerful look at Ray Vecchio in Las Vegas and the dark reality of being undercover as Langoustini; an unvarnished tale that makes me want to hug Ray so badly, especially with the nostalgic interjections of Fraser and Chicago. Be warned: the footage she uses is violent and graphic, but it successfully conveys how this violent life has become his norm. *hugs him some more*

If you need a hope chaser after watching this, make sure to read Sperrywink's complementary fic.

I admit the premise of this story was my idea, and when Luzula expressed an interest in it I badgeredencouraged her to write it. Many of us, I'm sure, are already fans of Luzula's writing, her beautiful descriptions of environs, and the lovely way she balances Fraser's surface reticence and his emotional intensity beneath.

Luzula has done a great job of merging the two canons, with Dief as a half Arctic dragon who was Bob Fraser's partner by choice. He teams up with Benton to find Bob's killers, and they are aided and hindered along the way by dragons and humans. It's filled with delightful characters and loads of heart, as the two of them find a way to work with each other.

Like some of you, I'm sure, I vaguely knew due South as a child and have since returned to it and fallen in love with it all over again. I've been reading fic for quite awhile but only recently became anything you would call "active" in the dS fandom (mainly on tumblr).

Why this must be read: This fic takes the magical realism of due South and runs with it, carefully twisting it into actual fantasy without ever abandoning the Chicago that due South is set in. It fits in wonderfully with the mythology of the show, dialing the fairytale elements of due South up to eleven and yet still somehow staying very true to the characters as they are. I wouldn't technically call this a crossover, but in some ways it feels as though it is one, because the OCs are so well crafted and their backstories are so well thought-out. KellieM has informed me that this is, in fact, a crossover. Sorry for the confusion!

To finish off my driving of the van, I present you with an achingly sweet snippet - The Love that Asks No Questions, The Love That Stands The Test. For 297 words it packs in a world of emotion. I'll say nothing more about it, since it speaks for itself.

Because it is so funny I laughed till my stomach hurt. Ray in a fetish shop saying, "I want to be pretty Fraser..." The OC's are all brilliant (especially the gang of two) and... just wonderful. That's even before you get to the sex. There is also a link to a podfic by Luzula, which is yet more awesomeness...

Author's Summary:
Fraser raised his eyebrows thoughtfully. "Lipstick colour names can be rather obscure. I assume it's a metaphor to describe something fragile and lovely but also dangerous and potentially capable of raining hot destruction upon an unsuspecting citizenry. On the other hand, it may refer to the fact that this particular coral shade is common to molten lava and geraniums. Don't lick it."

"It tastes like Jujubes," Ray reported.

"Nevertheless, resist the urge."

Why this must be read:
Yet more incredibly sweet F/V - anything by china_shop is worth reading and right now I am living with a small cat at the 'curiosity killed' stage. There is something adorable about Vecchio hunting for a kitten, with his wooly hat on, sniping at Fraser, while a world of UST is going on between him and Benny. And Dief, staying home to read Alexander Dumas... Funny, cute and feel good. Made me feel happy to read.

Why this must be read: Because it is sweet smush, and made me laugh. I'm trying to imagine the same story from Fraser's pov, and it makes me laugh even harder. There is a lot of good stuff on her site for the dedicated Vecchio-phile, and this is a nice taste.
