Why this must be read: Because PopSlash is all about the illusions of celebrity, the power of transformation, and the specter of brotherhood lurking in the background. Plus, it's funny.

Popslash, as a genre tends to come in one of three flavors. N’Sync, the Backstreet Boys, and of course, everyone else who has ever had the fortune or misfortune to make an appearance on TRL. I am going to try to rec a few of each. My goal for the rec’s this month, is to focus on thematic stories. This week, it’s personal transformation.

And to start it off, Helenish's The Same Inside. In which Chris Kirkpatrick wakes up one day a woman. One of the boys turning into a woman is a fairly common AU scenario. Due South may want to be the fandom of magical realism, but I think that PopSlash owns the title. Odd and magical things happen to them, and are dealt with. After all, is waking up a woman any stranger than the discovery that one's choreographer is the Devil, or that your face is on the cover of a magazine, or that you are a shorthand for the decline of western civilization? Not so much.

This one, in which Chris Kirkpatrick turns into a girl, happens to be my personal favorite of them all. It's sweet, it's funny, and it's got some terrific dialogue.

An excerpt:

They had several more uncomfortable interviews, until Justin finally got sick of it, and during the next interview, talked about spiritual journeys and started to cry a little, and gave Chris an extremely platonic hug. Then JC said something about brothers needing sisters, which didn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense, but they didn't worry about it, what with a single crystal tear tracing artfully down Justin's cheek. Theresa sent him a fruit basket.

Everyone liked Chris after that.

"You're cute, but not threateningly cute," Theresa said. "Girls have started to fantasize that they're you."

"Creepy," Justin said.

"Let's not get into it," Theresa said. "Everyone still wants to fuck the rest of you, and the people who wanted to fuck you before, Chris, seem to have shifted their allegiance. So, we're good. stable."

"How do you find this shit out?" Joey asked.

"Not everyone wants to fuck us," JC said. "I mean, some people do like the music."

"sure," Theresa said.

For those who are new to the fandom, or who managed to survive the millennium hiding under a rug when the massive multimedia marketing campaign that was N'Sync, pictures of Chris Kirkpatrick are easy to find. They may even be on a lip gloss, a pillowcase, or even a Best Buy ad.

Ever since the band broke up for ever and ever. amen. went on hiatus, each of the guys has worked on their own separate solo projects. In Chris's case those included the following

Chip

He played teen singing sensation Chip Skylark on the Fairly Oddparents.

And of course:
Two

Enjoying himself drinking, golfing, and generally leading a private life. He’s also popped up in a Good Charlotte music video, and in the background of parties.

I'm in love with the whole JC & The Pussycats concept, and the stories. I had a terrible time choosing just one.

Me, too! I also love the ones where one of the guys turns into a baby, or a puppy. It's so ludicrous, but I love it anyway.

I love the "turns in to a girl/boy" storylines! Loved them for years. Haven't read them in years. Thanks for bringing me back to a type of storytelling that just happens. Like the weather or growning hair on your chest. Sometimes you just wake up a girl and have to deal with it.

You don't read enough modern literature about just dealing with the crap life develops.
