Why this must be read:
I'm usually not one for kid-fics, but I love how this story takes us along for a look at Fraser and Kowalski's life years down the line and shows how they are dealing with all the trials that happen in life. They are back in Chicago for Ray's mother's funeral and for Ray's father however he needs them. Although this story deals with some heavy issues, Ray and Fraser are working together and even when they are arguing you can see the solid foundation of their relationship.
I really like how this story fleshes out the relationships within the Kowalski household and within the Fraser-Kowalski household and realistically shows the tensions and misunderstandings that happen in families. Sometimes jumping through windows and chasing down crooks seems easier than facing the extended family and coping with loss.
He had cried earlier, after dinner while the kids were watching one of the Harry Potter movies on HBO. Fraser had held onto him the whole time as Ray snotted all over Fraser’s shirt and said stupid things about how he’d die too if Fraser did. Then, sobbing and dripping snot, Ray had given Fraser quite possibly the worst blowjob ever. But Fraser had come and kissed him afterwards, cuddled on the bed with him. Sometimes Ray didn’t know what he did to deserve Fraser.
Ray knew he’d be doing a whole lot worse if Fraser wasn’t there with him.
About halfway through the episode, Ray was startled by Gabriel’s small hand on his arm. He looked down at the sleepy boy clutching a stuffed wolf in one arm.
“Hey, Gabe,” Ray said softly. “Need something, buddy?”
Gabriel shook his head and clambered onto Ray’s lap, all sleep-warm and pliant. Ray tucked Gabriel’s head under his chin and closed his arms around him, taking comfort in his silent presence.
“Daddy?” Gabriel’s voice was a sleepy whisper.
“Yeah?”
“Sad?”
Ray nodded and pressed his cheek to Gabriel’s hair. “I am, buddy. I miss Grandma.”

And thank you for the story. It's quickly became one of my favorites. I love Damien Kowalski here!

Thanks again. I am working on more from this universe, but so far it's slow-going.

Very affecting, and I like the realistic familial interaction.

(I was a little surprised that it hadn't been rec-ed yet even though it is fairly recent- it is just so good, I thought the people before me would have snatched it up.)
