Forgie a Hameless Loon by Julian Lee (PG-13 - adult themes, nothing graphic)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: Josh/ Sam
Author on LJ:
julianlee
Author Website: The Thwarted Invasion
Why this must be read:
First of all, don't ask me to explain the title. Julian gives a reference in the header the story. You should check it out.
So this is not the happiest story I've read. And I must admit to having an aversion to tearjerkers. That said, I like the very serious attempt to describe a relationship here and particularly what it means to be in that relationship. I like that the sadness is palpable but not cliched or emotionally overwrought. I liked being sad in this story. I like the feeling of knowing something beautiful had died but its beauty, while it existed, was worth bearing its demise.
Julian is perhaps better known for her comedy and her sharp, funny dialogue. This is also evident here but I like that she takes on a weightier subject this time with the same no-fuss style and still comes out with something quite simplistically wonderful.
Josh opened the door of his parents' house and stared at Sam. "What are you doing here?"
"Direct order from the Governor."
Josh scratched the back of his head. The circles under his eyes were wide and dark. "The campaign--"
"You want to take it up with Governor Bartlet?"
Josh's chest hitched. He grabbed Sam hard. "I am so glad you're here."
"I know." Sam stroked Josh's back. "I know."
The instant Adele saw Leo, she fell against him, sobbing. "He was better, Leo," she choked out. "He was better."
The funeral was sad, and strange. Sam and his father did not get along, but his father was still alive, and as much as Sam loved Josh, he simply couldn't understand what he was going through. So he offered himself as support for Adele, though her grief was alien to him, as well. He thought of having to go through that, with Josh, and he shuddered.
