The Red Light Trilogy by Terri Beckett & Chris Power (R)

For my last rec of the month, I give you the treasured Red Light Trilogy.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch

Why this must be read: The trilogy, set after Sweet Revenge, that moves from gen to slash so very perfectly.

One More Mountain opens with Starsky and Hutch at a Greek wedding in New York for Hutch's buddy. The boys are drinking retsina and for those of you in the know,l you're aware that this will end in a very bad hangover. But, in the meantime, they're gonna have a little fun.

"Hey, Hutch!"

"Yeah."

"What the hell are we doin'?"

"It's called a zebekikos," Hutch said breathlessly, idiot-grin unfaltering.

"Yeah?" The Starsky exhibition of ethnic terpsichore paused in mid-sequence. "How 'bout that--? C'mon, boy, let's kick up a few more zebras, huh?"

Hutch has been dating a woman, Jaqi, who has a two year old daughter named Emma. It looks like he's headed for a good commitment, but remember this is Hutch, so don't count your weddings before they happen. To add to the problems, Nick calls them from LA and asks them to come home and help him. Nick has supposedly gone straight, working in Vegas, but trouble follows him wherever he goes. So, it's up to big brother and his partner to make Nick's troubles go away. Hutch is concerned about Starsky's health, so is Nick, but Me and Thee is determined to see this through so off to Vegas they go. The problem is, old habits die hard and that's the case once again. Lives are left in shambles, once again, in the path of Hurricane Nick.

As we open One More River, Hutch is in a bad mood again. Starsky had to move in with him since Starsky's place was trashed. Hutch's temporary partner is trying to not make the situation worse. They stop by Starsky's for lunch and the detective has turned into Michelangelo, painting his ceiling. It's definitely a rather interesting lunch. And the evening doesn't turn out much better. They're tense and at each other's throats. It's just the tension getting to them. They make up soon enough and have a grand birthday party for Starsky. And what's a good birthday without a threesome? Party time! And that's what gets them to open up to more than they admitted to before. But it's not an easy road because getting your head wrapped around the truth takes time. Starsky starts going through women like he's scanning the LA County phone book. Plus, there's still Jaqi that Hutch is involved with. But for all the running away they do, they run back towards one another at double the speed. Plus, they're still witty and much fun.

"Hutch."

"What now?" Hutch groaned.

"You reckon Han Solo ever gets his rocks off with Chewie?"

"Oh, for Chrissakes, Starsk..."

They have a wonderful vacation together, full of love and laughter and just being together. This is what Me and Thee is all about. But they have to go back to the real world soon enough and with it brings real world problems. And Starsky's going to be the one who pays for a case gone wrong.

No Easy Answers ends the Red Light Trilogy and it's also got really nice Lovett illos. Everyone's life is in shambles. Hutch's temporary partner is concerned, Jaqi is concerned, and the boys are just trying to make it through. Except, this time, Me and Thee can't overcome the odds.

"I'm out," he said before Hutch could speak. "Did you know? They don't want me any more. Kiss off." His voice was shaking, verging on the edge of total loss of control. Hutch winced, and laid a hand on his shoulder, gripping hard in lieu of the embrace he wanted to give.

Starsky's bitter, ticked off, depressed, and blackmailing Hutch to make him stay on the force. He's hurt and he needs time to heal. Hutch needs time, too, and he's not staying on the force without Starsky. There's many issues that need to be resolved, namely stemming from their relationship and the fact that Hutch will go to the ends of the earth for Starsky. But they're eventually back on track, if only they could be working the same track. Hutch is gone up the coast, Starsky's in his apartment living like a ghost, and everyone around them are trying to make sure they don't do something stupid. The roller coaster continues. Life is gonna be okay, if they can just survive day to day. Please be aware that the ending is left open and it's done so for a reason.
