Fandom:STARSKY and HUTCH Pairing:Starsky and Hutch Length:32.5k Author on LJ: charlotte_frostAuthor Website:http://www.magicravenranch.com/shmenu.html Why this must be read: Enshroud means to blanket and this theme is used so beautifully by Charlotte Frost throughout this story. It takes place at the end of the fourth season. Starsky's girl friend was killed in a freak car accident and he's mourning her death without Hutch for comfort. The guys have been off kilter (as we all know) quite a bit, Hutch with Marianne(going to her when he was beaten instead of Starsky), Starsky with the Blind girl, (closing himself off from Hutch) etc... Hutch tells Starsky he misses him and just wants to comfort him and they both decide to stop acting selfish and to rely on each other again. They're doing good until Nancy Blake from Terror on the dock comes back into Hutch's life. Things go very bad and now Hutch is in trouble, bad, bad, trouble. Nancy goes from sweet little Nancy to something that the guys never dreamed of. The old saying evil companions corrupts good morals, come true in this case, and Carl's his name. Starsky comes to the rescue and finds a physically and mentally hurt Hutch. "And how's your mother?"
Nancy sighed. "Mom moved back to Minnesota."
"Oh." Hutch hadn't been expecting that.
"Yeah," Nancy said with discomfort. "I started seeing this guy, Carl." Her eyes lit up. "He has bright green eyes and sandy-colored hair, down to his neck. He's muscular and very handsome. And, well, I moved in with him. Mom didn't approve. Leaving was her way of expressing how much she disapproved."
Hutch hadn't expected something like living together before marriage from a simple girl like Nancy. He shrugged. "More and more young couples are living together first. Sometimes I wonder if I wouldn't have married Vanessa, if I'd known what we were like together under the same roof." She seemed to relax at his lack of judgment. "How long ago did your mother leave?"
"It's been a few months. It's felt odd, her not being around," Nancy smiled gently, "but I think it was way past time for me to have my own life. I needed to grow up."
Hutch looked her over. "I'd say the change has done you well." Still, something seemed a bit "off" to him.
She gazed back at him, while running her finger along the rim of her glass of iced tea. "So, what about you? Anybody special in your life?"
Just Starsky. "No, I haven't had anybody serious in a while." They all turn out badly -- for me and Starsk both.

This is my last rec. I hope that I haven't put too many dents and scratches on the van for the next driver. Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 9,722 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://korossy.org/khk/Why this must be read: The bad guy has an axe to grind with law enforcement and kidnaps his victims at random-from any precinct, any rank, both male and female. He enjoys torturing and leaving his victims posed for their colleagues to find. Once he’s tipped the incompetent cops off to their whereabouts, of course. Hutch becomes one of the chosen. If you enjoy a hurt Hutch and a frantic Starsky, this story will push your buttons. Territorial Boundaries

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Hutch/OC; Hutch/Starsky Length: 33,856 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://kirstywelsh1.tripod.com/id65.htmlWhy this must be read: Starsky and Hutch go undercover in a hard core BDSM club that is linked to four murders. Before they can start the job, they have to fill in the club’s questionnaire. Hutch gets it right. Starsky gets it wrong, oh, so very wrong! Things do not go well in the club for Starsky, which leads to the whole operation exploding in both cops’ faces. Starsky is tortured, and then Hutch is forced to have sex with him. As if this isn't enough, the whole experience makes the guys examine their feelings for each other. Please do not read if BDSM and extreme violence isn’t for you. Leather and Laces

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 44,154 Author on LJ: http://hutchynstarsk.livejournal.com/Author Website: links on her LJ Why this must be read: This is a truly amazing AU. Those gorgeous hands of Hutch’s are so much more than just pretty, they are special. He has powers that benefit others. Makes them feel good, heals their mind as well as their body. But there are people who abuse this power to their own ends. The story is set pre and post series, and imo could easily explain some things in the actual series. I won’t elaborate on that, read it and see what you think. Hutch’s Hands

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 22,154 Author on LJ: dawnebeth Author Website: Dawnwind on AO3 Why this must be read:The author describes this story as a different version of 'Murder Ward' with the slant of sexual bondage. If bondage as a consensual sexual practice bothers you, this isn’t the story for you. The guys are in a committed, albeit new, relationship. They are undercover at Cabrillo mental hospital and as well as Hutch’s concerns over the safety of his partner, the errant journalist, Jane Hutton, and the patients that they are trying to protect, he is having erotic thoughts about his partner’s restraints. And a nice little sensual twist at the end introduces Starsky, and us, to Hutch’s macramé skills. Poseys for Starsky

Hi, guys. My name is wightfaerie and I am driving the crack_van for the first time. dawnebeth has left it in tip top condition for me. But be warned, I don't drive anything usually so I may well crash and burn! Apologies in advance. I thought I would start this journey at my beginning, with a story that was one of the first that I read in this fandom. Fingers crossed. Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 17,435 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://kirstywelsh1.tripod.com/index.htmlWhy this must be read: This story fills in the bits that The Plague part 2 misses out. What happens to Hutch between Judith taking Callendar's blood and the airport goodbye? Plenty in this story. For me, it fills in unanswered questions to Hutch's recovery. The battles fought to nurse him back to his healthy self. I can't vouch for the medical accuracy of this story, but it worked for me. There are some typos in the story, but nothing that distracted me from the unfolding events. Counting the Breaths

This is my last rec and I'll get the Torino/van spiffed up for the next driver. It's been fun! Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 16,181 words Author on LJ: przed Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/przed/pseuds/PR%20ZedWhy this must be read: This is a fascinating AU version of the popular episode starting with the premise that Starsky and Hutch met at the academy but don't know each other very well and they aren't partners. But when Starsky hears that Hutch is missing, he suddenly decides that it is his mission to find him. He isn't even quite sure why--but as he helps Hutch through the withdrawal period, a deep trust and friendship develops. Could it be love? A Different Fix

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 786 Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Azzy/pseuds/AzzyWhy this must be read: One of the fun things about driving the van is discovering new authors I have never read or heard of. Azzy seems to have only three S&H fic, but from reading this one, I plan to read the others, too. This is a deceptively simple story with a familiar theme: Post Sweet Revenge and the guys are tired. Starsky won't be able to work as a cop any more, and what does Hutch feel about their future? Of course, they will face the unknown shoulder to shoulder, together, as a team. Destination Unknown

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Huth Length: 1285 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=5 Why this must be read: You know that old saw, "a good author can convince me of anything"? Well, I honestly never believed that Hutch hated Christmas always--he's a curmudgeon in Little Girl Lost, but I don't think that's his usual way in December. But, in this sweet little fic, he has such difficulty with Christmas that he wants any celebrations moved to a different day--for Starsky's sake. And I totally believe his reasons. He still has to explain why he's hosting such an elaborate feast on Groundhog Day to the owner of the restaurant in Venice Place. His love of Starsky shines through the conversation. February 2nd

E. Lowry has them both thinking the same thoughts, but neither is able to admit the truth to his partner. One of the things I like about this story is that we don't know quite whose POV we are in. There are two sections, one for Starsky, one for Hutch--but she never specifies. I think I know which is which--can you figure it out? Cross Purposes

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 7734 Author on LJ:Ashkevran Author Website:http://starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=159Why this must be read: I have two kinks that rarely get addressed in S&H fics: tattoos and piercings. So, it's a delight to find that Starsky is as turned on by the idea of Hutch with an earring as I would be. (Actually, I want Starsky wearing an earring, too!) It's been a long hot day, both guys are drained and sweaty. Hutch falls asleep on the couch and Starsky is transfixed by white gold threaded through your earlobe. White gold piercing you. The rest of the story is by turns erotic, arousing and sensual as Starsky makes love to Hutch over and over. Please

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 12522 words Author on LJ:unknown Author Website:http://starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=292 Why this must be read: There are literally dozens of stories on how Starsky and Hutch met and became friends. This is a different version than I had ever read: the guys are not best buddies right out of the academy, in fact don't immediately click even after they are partnered as detectives under Captain Dobey. It takes a month of working the streets together and then a very volatile encounter with a former friend of Hutch's to cement the partnership. I was a little distracted by punctuation and spelling errors, but the same could be said of my early stories. I will keep my eye out for more of Kerry2boys' stories. Partners101

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 1623 Author on LJ: duluthgirl Author Website: http://starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=258 Why this must be read: a poignant story of Hutch's terror and shock directly after Starsky's shooting in Sweet Revenge. Hutch can barely move, not even reach down to feel if Starsky has a pulse. I love this line: All Hutch could do was watch...and breathe. When life is stripped down to simply existing until the crisis is resolved, or at least Hutch finds out if Starsky will survive. Withstanding

I'm Dawnebeth, back behind the wheel of the red and white painted Torino/crackvan. I'm looking for old and new stories that will illustrate my love of Starsky and Hutch. Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 49,679 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://www.starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=249Why this must be read: I read this originally when it was in a zine, so I was really excited that is is now online. This is an AU version of the episode Murder Ward. Starsky is still a cop but partnered with a man who has been injured, so he wasn't able to go undercover with Starsky to Cabrillo State. Starsky's on his own as a suicidal patient, and has to rely and trust the sympathetic orderly Ken Hutchinson for his safety. I love how Dana Austin Marsh weaves Starsky's history in (the incident with Prudholm) yet slightly alters the events because now Hutch isn't a cop. They still have that instant connection, but aren't quite sure how to trust one another. DAM's attention to detail is always a joy, and this is a long, satisfying read. Murder Ward

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 5077 words Author Website: Dawnwind on AO3, here Why this must be read: For some people, music plays an essential part in life. It’s in their head, pops out of them all the time, and plays over their life like the soundtrack to a movie, or a music video. I think Hutch must be one of these. It's canon that he’s musically inclined – he plays the guitar and the piano (and attempts the trumpet), whistles, and likes to sing (he's a light tenor). Dawnwind's Hutch’s Song is a wonderfully lyrical story about the music running through Hutch’s life and in his heart. It’s very prettily done, and the ending rocks.
From "Hutch’s Song":
Theirs was a waltz, a dance for two, performed to music only they heard . . .
How perfect is that?

Vidder: T.M. Musical Artist: LMFAO -"Sexy and I Know It" Length: 2:58 Vidder's Website: N/A Why this must be viewed: because it’s by the talented T.M., and it showcases Starsky, with a great sense of humor. T.M. does a wonderful job using LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” – hers is clever and funny, and her choice of clips, her timing, rhythm, and choreography, are all fabulous. And Starsky, of course, really *is* sexy. If you need a Starsky fix (and even if you don't), watch this fun vid.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 25,858 words Why this must be read: Last month hardboiledbaby recced JoJo’s This Mission Thing, which the author notes is "probably... a sequel to A Day Less Ordinary, but could also maybe be read as post-Sweet Revenge." Well, A Day Less Ordinary has not yet been recced here, so I thought I would do that right now, since it’s also an excellent story and really should be read.
A Day Less Ordinary is set in a world without James Gunther, but which moves on its own somewhat parallel course. A day that starts out like any other quickly turns into a nightmare when Starsky is gravely injured. It’s full of hurt and comfort, wonderful writing, and all the detail that could never be packed into a one-hour television episode, including the most harrowing emergency transport I’ve ever read. Even though it’s an ever-so-slightly different universe in which Starsky and Hutch exist, in JoJo’s hands they’re warm and familiar and true and so alive, which makes this story all the more frightening and believable. From "A Day Less Ordinary":
Starsky sank slowly on to his knees as his strength flowed out of him in a rush - he would have fallen forward except he sensed the hilt sticking out from under his ribs and he so got only one hand to the ground. He tried to turn around, to do the only thing that occurred to him, which was to find his partner to sort it all out.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch (referenced) Length: 35 KB Author on LJ: unknown Author’s website: unknown Why this must be read: Ioannia is a wonderful, masterful writer. As far as I can tell, she’s written only a handful of S&H stories, but the ones I’ve read are excellent. Ioannia seems to have been active in the fandom around 2002 - 2005, but I can’t find any trace of her now, and sadly, her stories aren’t easy to find online. I wish she had written more, and that she was still writing.
In The 365th Day, Hutch is separated from his partner and completely lost. Ioannia’s telling of Hutch’s story is beautifully done and moving. As a reader you understand perfectly what Hutch is feeling, even if, like the other characters in the story, you don’t completely understand what is going through his head.
From "The 365th Day":
The breakup had been bad. One heart torn in two and expected to keep beating. Hell, *they* had hemorrhaged. It should have been the other way around; but through the whole thing it was he, the diplomat, who screamed until he started hacking up blood. Well, all relationships fell apart, sooner or later, in the police department. Metro was conspicuous for its high rate. And frequently, one partner wanted it and the other didn't; no difference here. The physical separation had been, as Dobey put it, "taken out of our hands". But the emotional rupture had not been his choice, and dear loving God in Heaven, he had done everything he knew to prevent and deny it when it happened. He pleaded, he manipulated, he expostulated. He felt like Elmer Gantry trying to hawk his love like an evangelist, and he was nothing if not a dogged salesman. In the end, like Gantry, he had watched the whole tent of his passion and commitment burn, sagging, to the ground of reality.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: about 7000 words Why this must be read: It's by the wonderful Rebelcat, who cautions her readers that the story won first place in Me & Thee’s “Make Hutch Hurl” contest. Hutch’s emetic distress isn’t even the worst of it, though. Come one, you really want to know why Hutch is puking all over, don't you? Even though it will likely make you wince and go “ouch,” “Officer Down” will also make you laugh, a lot. And Rebelcat has the boys down pat, even in this rather, um . . . unusual situation.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 13K Author’s website: Some of Kaye's writing is here and here; other works, listed at the BCL, were on the Me and Thee Archive and can be recovered through the Wayback Machine.
Why this must be read: Well, because Starsky’s really hurt and Hutch is really angsty. I hate to say it, but I love it when they're like that. It’s lively, well-paced, and suspenseful, and you just have to feel for poor Hutch, who doesn’t know what the heck is going on -- he can't even find his partner, much less help him. Kaye says she wrote this in response to a challenge to “Make Starsky Bleed.” And boy, does he ever.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: mostly gen, with some implied Starsky/Hutch Length: about 2500 words Why this must be read: Because Vedette Ciel’s writing is simply beautiful, and her story perfectly captures the essence of ‘me and thee.’
From "Closer":
So he sat. Sat and drank and drank and sat more tipped over. Yeah, he should have that gun checked. Should take it in to the station for a better one. Damn thing’s too heavy anyway. Then again he liked that positive plank of metal, it balanced well, and when he was at his finest, he was dangerous. Let’s face the fact that that is what matters. Balance, coordination, speed. Him and what he packs, it was a combination. It was what made him on the street. That, and, of course. That other perfect thing.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 2744 words Author’s website: kuonji's works are on LJ and most of her S & H fanfiction is also on AO3, here
Why this must be read: Because "Turing Test" is a great AU story. Kuonji is always a wonderfully creative writer, and here she drops her readers right into another reality, a very bad place which is dark and terrifying – and eerily familiar, in a way, which may be part of the reason why it works so well. This is not pretty or light reading, but it is excellent and thought-provoking.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 1347 words Why this must be read: As a reader, and not a writer, of fanfiction, I greatly appreciate well-written stories which expand my little universe of Starsky and Hutch. Instead of being limited to four seasons’ worth of episodes (and a pilot), my options are boundless. Completely new pieces are great, but I also love stories where writers work around an episode -- filling in holes or reworking a scene or tag, often improving upon what we’ve been given by the series’ writers and directors.
Morgan Logan’s “Care and Maintenance” is one such story, her version of what may have transpired after the close of “The Psychic.” Starsky is having a difficult time following the events of the day, and molo tells his story beautifully, quietly, intimately. Everything they do, everything they say – everything they don’t say – is exactly right. It’s just lovely.

Why this must be read: JoJo is a brilliant writer. She’s wonderfully creative, writes with great detail and depth, and has a talent for drawing characters and situations that ring perfectly true. In “Believing” JoJo takes a scene from “Ninety Pounds of Trouble” in which Hutch attempts to establish his identity as Eddie Carlyle, and gives it an interesting twist – so that both character and reader have to wonder what is real and what is not. "Believing" is on both Archive of Our Own and the Bay City Library.

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch Pairing: none Length: a quickie Author on LJ: duluthgirlAuthor Website: Duluthgirl on starskyhutch911Why this must be read:This is... how do I describe this fanwork? My brain insists on calling it "brilliantly captioned cracky semi-meta picspam" (sorry, DG) but if you can just trust me about the "brilliant" part, you won't be disappointed, I promise. DG starts it off by saying "Writing fan fiction is hard work," then proceeds to show us, by means of well-selected screencaps and hilarious captioning, just how hard it really is... for Starsky and Hutch. I'll say no more, but fic writers and beta readers will especially get a kick out of this. Do yourself a favor and go have a look :D S&H and Fanfiction

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch Pairing: none Length: 3,044 words Author on LJ: solosundanceAuthor Website: JoJo at AO3Why this must be read:The author describes this as "probably... a sequel to A Day Less Ordinary, but could also maybe be read as post-Sweet Revenge." I admit, I tend to think of it as the latter, and it's among my most beloved PSR stories. In it, Starsky has bounced back from his injuries and has returned to the job, to the streets again with Hutch, and everything appears to be back to normal... but appearances are deceiving, and the reality is much more complicated than that. Starsky's doctor lays it on the line: All I know is that you have recovered from what should have been a fatal attack, and that we were able to put you back together... imperfectly. What I think I'm trying to tell you, David, is that you will not get better than you are now. To have to face the fact that your life has been irrevocably altered—and not for the better—is sobering and frightening; not just for yourself, but for the people that love you. The situation, how Starsky and Hutch deal with it, the dialogue and the emotions that drive it, the sadness and the hope: all ring true, both to the canon and to how real life works. This authenticity, if you will, is very much a hallmark of JoJo's work in all the fandoms she writes in, and makes her stories accessible and moving. So why are you still here? Go, get moved :) This Mission Thing
