Why this must be read:
One of the interesting things about Firefly is the way each of the characters can see echoes of themselves in their shipmates. Kaylee is the innocence Mal lost. Jayne bonds with Book because underneath, they have a lot more in common than Book will openly admit to. This story is about the things Simon sees in Mal, an uncomfortable reflection on where he's been and where he's going.
