Why this must be read:

I had the hardest time deciding which of [livejournal.com profile] eponine119's fics to rec. Unlike so much fanfic, which is about simple wish fulfillment (and that certainly has its place!), she never settles for the easy way out. Her fics always have the ring of hard, cold truth to them and some of the best character insight I've come across in the fandom. So please just go read everything she's ever written, particularly any Jack/Sawyer or Jack/Sawyer/Kate. She's also a great hand at humor, which is a nice alternative to all the angst.

In this particular fic, Kate summons Jack when she realizes Sawyer's just been sitting on the beach for two days. What I love about it is that if something did happen to Sawyer, he wouldn't ask for help, and certainly not from Jack. Vulnerability is an aspect of Sawyer I cannot see explored enough in fic and here she takes a terrible situation and wrings beauty from it. Her slash subtext is so deftly drawn it always leaves you wanting more.

"I'm trying to tell you something here, Doc," Sawyer said, in a quiet voice.

"What?" Jack asked. He watched Sawyer's face, the way his jaw moved when he was thinking, the way the wind blew his hair across his forehead but he didn't reach up to brush it away, as though he didn't notice it. Sawyer didn't answer, and after a minute Jack leaned forward questioningly.

"Hey," he demanded, and Sawyer didn't even blink. "What's going on here?"

Sawyer turned his face toward Jack's, and even in the tropical heat Jack shivered. Sawyer blinked but even then his eyes didn't focus, didn't change. Jack knew what he was going to say, but let him say it anyway. "I can't see nothin'," Sawyer admitted quietly.
