Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: An Overview

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nightbird18 for starting this off and especially for doing the archive section. I did remove a couple of the archives she had listed. One because it hadn't been updated since 1999 and the other because the link to the fanfiction section wasn't working.

Now, on with the show.

Overview

Someone once called TPM "The fandom that ate Cincinnati" and it's true. This fandom exploded overnight. And that night was May 19, 1999, the date of the premiere of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Within a few months, the Master Apprentice archive had logged 1000 stories. Suddenly, it seemed everyone was writing TPM.

SW: TPM tells the story of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn's love for his hot young apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. They travel the galaxy do-gooding and--

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan
Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan

Whatd'ya mean that's not the plot?

Okay, yeah, I seem to recall some tediousness about a Trade Federation threatening Naboo and a whole bunch of other nonsense that only served to introduce the other two important characters in the film: Queen Amidala (the future Mrs. Darth Vader) and Anakin Skywalker, the most annoying child in the Republic. Who'd a thunk this brat could grow up to become Darth Vader? You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Anyway, our heroes rescue Amidala from the Federation and end up on Tatooine where Qui-Gon meets Anakin, who has an unusually high midichlorian count. Apparently, the higher the midichlorian count, the stronger you are in the Force. Anakin's count is off the scale. Qui-Gon believes that Anakin fulfills a prophecy.

Lest you think that the Force is all about goodness and light, it ain't. There's a dark side represented by Lord Sidious and the interestingly tatooed and horned Darth Maul. These guys would love nothing more than to see all the Jedi dead.

Anyway, long story short, our heroes make it back to the Jedi Council with the boy where Qui-Gon announces he'll train Anakin even after Yoda has said the boy is too old. But wait, Qui-Gon already has an apprentice, you say. Yeah, we know. And so does Obi-Wan, and if looks could kill Qui-Gon would have died a lot earlier in the film. This scene and its impact on the relationship between Qui and Obi is mentioned quite frequently in TPM fanfic.

Very frequently.

Before all this can be resolved, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan return to Naboo where they meet up with Darth Maul for the last time. Tragically, Qui-Gon is killed, but Obi-Wan avenges his death by cutting Darth Maul in half. This leads to the extremely touching death scene that launched 1000 fanfics. After Qui-Gon's funeral, Obi-Wan badgers Yoda into letting him train Anakin. Big mistake, Obi-Wan.

Characters:

Master Qui-Gon Jinn: A Jedi master who is nonetheless stubborn and rebellious. He does not hesitate to confront and defy the Council when need be. He is convinced that Anakin is the Chosen One.

Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi: Qui-Gon's apprentice. More dynamic than Qui-Gon but also more of a stickler for the rules. He takes on the apprenticeship of Anakin in accordance to Qui-Gon's dying wish.

Anakin Skywalker: A slave from Tatooine, he may be the Chosen One told of in prophecy. He may have been conceived by the will of the Force itself. He will eventually fall to the Dark Side and become Darth Vader.

Queen Amidala/Padme: The young ruler of Naboo (14 years old). She's strong, intelligent and idealistic. During the trade dispute, she disguised herself as the handmaiden Padme .

Darth Maul: A Sith, a being of the Dark Side of the Force. He was Darth Sidious's apprentice. He killed Qui-Gon in battle. Obi-Wan got revenge.

Darth Sidious: A Sith Lord who wants to destroy the Jedi Order and take over the galaxy.

Senator Palpatine: The representative from Naboo to the Galactic Republic and a very ambitious man. Senator Palpatine and Darth Sidious are one and the same.

Jar-Jar Binks: A native of Naboo and an incompetent and annoying waste of oxygen, but he does help in winning the battle on Naboo.

Shmi Skywalker: Anakin's mother. She is also a slave on Tatooine.

Yoda: If you don't know who Yoda is, I can't help you.

Mace Windu: A Jedi master and member of the Council.

The Jedi Apprentice books:
A series of books written by Jude Watson for young readers centering around a teenaged Obi-Wan and his new master, Qui-Gon. George Lucas does not consider them canon, and that's a shame because there's some really good stuff in there, not the least of which is the story of how Obi-Wan came to be Qui-Gon's apprentice. However, many fanfiction writers do consider the books canon for the purposes of fanfiction and you will find events in the books mentioned frequently. You can get more informaition on the books at http://www.scholastic.com/titles/starwars/jedi.htm.

Some characters from the books:

Xanatos: Qui-Gon's first apprentice. He betrayed Qui-Gon after Qui-Gon killed his father. He has a scar on his face that looks like a broken circle.

Bant: Obi-Wan's best friend. She is of the same race as Admiral Ackbar, the Mon Calamari.

Bruck Chun: Obi-Wan's rival. He is turned by Xanatos.

Tidbits

--Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were together in the film for about 18 minutes. Those 18 short minutes spawned a huge fandom that is still going.

--Qui-Gon's death is the object of a huge denial cult within the fandom and brought about one of the most amusing things I've ever seen: Character death warnings for a canon death.

--Unifying force vs. the living force: I've never understood the difference. I believe it has something to with the living force tying together everything that is here and now, and the unifying force has more to do with the future. Qui-Gon is attuned to the living force; Obi-Wan, to the unifying force, which makes their approaches to situations very different.

Pairings:

For obvious reasons, the most popular pairing is Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, but you'll also see Obi-Wan/Bruck Chun, Qui-Gon/Xanatos, and Qui-Gon/Mace Windu, among others.

Nice overview. *g* Could you lj-cut it though, please?

[identity profile] carolinecrane.livejournal.com 2003-11-29 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It just makes it easier on peoples' friends lists not to have long entries with big pictures to load every time they load their friends page. I don't recall seeing any un-cut overviews, but maybe I missed them. At any rate, it just makes life a little easier for the people who have a slower connection or busy flists etc.

Huh, I remember most overviews as being behind cut tags especially the photos and such.

Actually, all the longer ones (or maybe all of them) have been behind cut tags. It makes it easier for those who have a long friends list to skip things they may not be deeply interested in.
That being said, I enjoyed your overview very much.

If I recall, most of them were, at the beginning. I'm sorry about that.

Were you here at the beginning? Because the links to the overviews on the front page do go directly to the entry, behind the cut. But, I do think that most of them were behind cut tags to begin with.

If you head over to the crack_van calendar, here and go down to December and the first few days the community was open, you'll find that, upon a quick overview I did just now, they *all* were.

I didn't mean to offend you. It's just a lot easier on friends pages.

Or possibly September, which is what I meant.

[identity profile] rhiannon-jehane.livejournal.com 2003-11-29 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In every overview I've seen since the community started, pictures have been cut-tagged.

Oops -- didn't realize you had already fixed it by the time I posted!

*blush*

Excellent overview, by the way. I've never really been into any of the Star Wars movies, but you made it sound interesting.

I will not flirt with any more fandoms I will not flirt with any more fandoms I will not....

Darth Maul: A Sith, a being of the Dark Side of the Force. He was Darth Sidious's apprentice. He killed Qui-Gon in battle. Obi-Wan got revenge.

He is also very hot.

I can't help it, I am a fan of Obi/Maul. I'll ever read Maul het. *ashamed*

I SECOND THAT!

[identity profile] valarltd.livejournal.com 2003-11-29 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a trilogy fan myself (barring the occasional Obi/Ani noncon)
but please allow me to point you to the Darth Side
http://zpdark.tripod.com/index-2.html

It is no longer being updated as ZP Florian, one of the first publishers of SW erotica, has succumbed to Alzheimer's.

It contains the "Bouquet of Deflowers" challenge, The Sith Lords are Forever challenge series, The Sith Rituals challenge series, the "Maul meets his Parents" challenge. And a selection of Qui/Obi.

If you never imagined Darth Maul/Luke Skywalker, please go check out the Malachite. And the "Phantom Men Ass" uis just a screamingly funny parody.

Thank you for taking over this overview, rosalita. You and nightbird did a great job!

YOU ABSOLUTELY ROCKS.

THAT´S ABOUT IT.

[identity profile] carmarthen.livejournal.com 2007-03-01 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It occurs to me that this might need to be updated to include the other prequels....

[personal profile] nebularific 2007-03-02 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd hate to lose this version though... It's so damn funny! But, yeah, it is a bit behind the times. And all the pictures are gone. :(

[identity profile] carmarthen.livejournal.com 2007-03-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, TPM fandom is kind of different from Prequel fandom as a whole...

[identity profile] sa-si-le.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I second that. I'm still in denial over Qui-Gon's death, and it's been eight and a half years...

Terribly amusing summary, by the way.

I loved this over-view. So interesting. Did you mean if you add up all their scenes together it really only totals 18 minutes?! I just joined CV recently (again). Love Q/O.
