The Darkling Torrent by Cami
Hi, I'm
alinewrites and I'm driving the B7 van for september.
I'm new to the B7 fandom but I think I read more fanfiction than I thought possible to absorb. I don't have a definite pairing in the show. No, it's a lie. Avon/Blake gets at me no matter what; gen or slash, I don't care. But I do like other (male) pairings. I have a soft spot for Avon/Tarrant or Avon/Vila.

Fandom: BLAKES 7
Pairing: Avon/Blake (Gen or preslash)

Why this must be read:
Since I resumed work today (erk), I felt like reccing a relatively happy and easy to read story. "Darkling Torrent" by Cami is supposed to be a prequel to the controversial "Careless whispers" but it stands alone very well and might be, IMO, better than the sequel. the characterization is good, the plot is very well done and I love the way the story shows us another side of war - the side of those who just *wait* and worry. I love Avon in this fic, manipulative but caring, Blake's the stubborn, brave and committed character I love so much. Tarrant is treated well (which is not always the case in B7 fanfic); and Vila is quite interesting. And useful. Good to Avon, probably even more than just good. Essential to Avon's well-being and sanity. The relationship between Avon and Blake is very believable and subtly depicted. We know how much Avon cares, how painful the waiting is as well as the uncertainty about Blake's fate. I love myself a guilty Avon.
To me, it's a comfort story without any excessively sappy and unbelievable side, just what I need to read when I come back home.

Avon bristled and reached for the man's shirt. Vila's arm darted out
to block him. The smaller man gave him a grim glare before turning to
the medtech. "This," he said, jabbing his finger into Avon's chest, "is
Kerr Avon. The Kerr Avon. Tarrant sent for him. And Tarrant was in
there," Vila directed his finger to a set of double doors behind and to
the right of the technician.
"Avon," the man whispered the name
as one would a dark, fearsome legend that they hoped didn't truly
exist. Swiftly, he stepped aside.
Vila grabbed Avon's hand and
dragged him forward. "If you'd spend a little more time mingling," he
grumbled, "I wouldn't have to tell people who you are."
