Why this must be read:
Amerella excels at showing the identity/sexual identity confusion that marks adolescence, and she does a particularly good Seth. This story, as with her other stories, is all about character and dialogue--Seth's dialogue with himself and with other characters. The dialogue is sharp and funny and real.
Summer says, softer, “So, what about you? Do you have any plans? You know, for the future?” When he has to think about this for too long, she says, “Well, what about your book, Cohen?”
“Oh,” Seth says. “Yeah. Yeah, see, I don’t know anymore. I’m not very articulate, so. Also, you’re supposed to write about what you know, right, and like, what do I know, really?”
He knows Zach is a kissy drunk, and that Ryan is straight, and that this is pretty much what he’s wanted all his life, to be with Summer like this. So he doesn’t know why he feels the way he does, like, lost, laying next to her with their shoulders touching, which is what he would really like to know, more than anything.
“You know stuff,” Summer lies to make him feel better, and she kisses him – he thinks she’s going for his mouth but she completely misses and bangs her lips hard up against his chin instead. Ow. “That wasn’t a kissy kiss,” she tells him directly afterwards. “It was just a regular kiss. Just so we’re clear.”
“That’s all right then, I guess,” Seth says, and sits up. The waves go hush, hush; his stomach is churning too. He says, “So I think I might throw up, but I’ll try not to get any on you.”
Summer allows this. “That’s acceptable,” she says.
