Fandom: The OC Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: misspamelaAuthor Website: Miss Pamela's World TourWhy this must be read:Oh, man. Talk about a fandom cliche. But they're cliches because we love reading them over and over, and this story is no exception. What if Ryan couldn't overcome his pride to call Sandy? What if he had nowhere else to go? Rentboy!AU, with all that perfect angst and anger and pain in Ryan whittled down just a little bit more to a fine and brittle edge. "Okay, fine." Seth crossed his arms and put on his most hardcore Steven Seagal stare. "What if I hire you?"
Ryan sucked in a breath and looked away. He looked hurt. Seth could see him shutting down right before his eyes. Fine, whatever. He didn't care if Ryan was hurt as long as he was safe, and that didn't really make a lot of sense, but Seth was just going to go with it.
"Hire me," Ryan said slowly, "like…?"
"Like other people hire you. Except not with the, you know," Seth made what he hoped were some smooth-and-stylin', yet suggestive hand gestures. "I'll pay you whatever you make for a week." Hoo boy, that was probably going to be a lot of sailing lessons.
Ryan just stood there, his eyes screaming "kicked puppy" and his body language screaming "get the fuck away".
"It'll be like a paid vacation," Seth offered.
That got him another good long stare.. Trust me, Seth thought. C'mon, you had to have trusted worse people than me, right? RentAnd that's it for me this month! Hope you guys have enjoyed some of these old-school first season recs. I know I have!

Fandom: The OC Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: glossingAuthor Website: glossings Why this must be read:This is the beginning of season two, that moment when Ryan and Seth first meet, after months apart and heartache in between. On the screen, that scene had all the evidence of star-crossed lover-ness, the sort of "God, why can't we just be together?" This story takes that emotion and runs with it. Seth's mind, it's clicking. Click-clack, rope against mast, tacking this way and that, and he's been lost plenty of times. Neiman's in December, hallways every Tuesday after Labor Day, his own goddamned bedroom for most of his pubescence. But he's lost now like he used to know where he was going but he's old. Forgetful. Big black gaps in his mind, in his head, and he's circling around them, sweeping and sliding in the current. Lost, tacking, going nowhere.
But a smile can be faked, and Ryan answers it with one of his own fakes, and this is okay. Grilling's better, just Seth and the meat and if he doesn't take cheese on his burger, well, then, Frank gets that. Frank's *sensitive*, and it's kind of weird, because so is Sandy, but that's different.
It's all different, but the biggest difference is Ryan and Seth needs to concentrate. On Ryan. Tired, kind of ashy-faced, shifting from foot to foot in a way that Seth really should have patented because if he *had*, he'd be sitting pretty. Ryan.Indifferent

Fandom: The OC Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: torchthisnowAuthor Website: Riders on the Storm Why this must be read:This story has Anna overhearing a conversation she probably didn't expect to be privvy to. Please note minor voyeurism kink thingie. Also, great Anna voice. Well, actually, Anna could see why Summer had picked Wonder Woman. She was the spitting image and plus, she’d looked hot. Even though she’d accessorized with only one power bracelet, Summer still would have been the main attraction at any of the comic cons Anna had been to, and that included the one where three of the Lord of the Rings guys showed up.Superhero Hype

Fandom: The OC Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: edie22Author Website: Edie's SlashWhy this must be read:Sexy poptart, with a nice lead-in. Perhaps an overuse of "Ry," but really, easy to ignore. Ryan was really going to start locking that door. First, Kirsten had walked in on him, and then it had been Sandy. Kirsten had been embarrassed and apologetic, saying "That never happened with Seth." That comment had freaked him out for a good twenty minutes until he realized she meant that she’d never walked in on Seth with a girl, not that she’d never walked in on him and Seth. Sandy had grinned and apologized, but when Marissa had left stammering apologies, he’d clapped Ryan on the back. The next day there were condoms in his medicine cabinet. He really tried not to figure out which one of his pseudo-parents had given them to him.Interrupted

Fandom: The OC Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: hackthisAuthor Website: dysfunctional (fanfiction by zahra) Why this must be read:In a lot of ways, hackthis and lalejandra made this fandom as vibrant as it was, back in the first season. Lots of their stuff has been recc'ed here, and I'd totally re-rec it all. This, however, isn't. Ryan centric; for a fandom whose central tenet seems to be Ryan angst, such storylines don't show up that often in fanfic. A lesser man, someone not as jaded, would give up Seth as a lost cause just because he doesn’t know what he wants.Someone else, not-Ryan, could have decided that friendship and wife-beaters are no match for breasts and miniskirts.Schadenfreude

Fandom: The OC Pairing: Summer/Seth. Summer/Anna. Anna/Seth. Anna/Ryan. Author on LJ: lalejandraAuthor Website: Apostatize Why this must be read:Well, general convention is not to rec the same author twice in one set, but ce la vie. This is, without a doubt, the most scorchingly-hot story in this fandom. And with a pairing list like the one above, how can it not be? I can't really reconcile this situation with the OC I know, in particular Lalejandra's Seth, but that's never stopped me from enjoying good, quality porn. Her Anna voice is brilliant, though, and this is a suprisingly long story given the content. I love this story. Anna Stern absolutely positively one hundred percent does not want to lose her virginity to Seth Cohen. It isn’t that she doesn’t like him or want to fuck him or any of that -- she thinks he’s sexy as hell, funny, attractive, all that stuff. She likes him a lot, and is even a little bit in love with him. But she knows better. Anna knows that on a purely practical level, giving her virginity to Seth would be a bad idea of enormous proportions.Hell

Fandom: The OC Pairing: N/A Author on LJ: serialkarmaAuthor Website: None; though all her fic is memorized and tagged at her LJ. Why this must be read:This is a lovely story. A little bit of Sandy and Kirsten's life, earlier and later. No spoilers, written in season one. During the early years of their marriage, long after the mail truck, but not long at all after Seth, Sandy would come home in the evenings and find strange things lying about their tiny house in Berkeley. A lamp without a shade here, a pile of three mismatched suitcases there. Found objects, strays that somehow made their way to his home, that Kirsten would fuss over as though they were animals, or children. Sanding, painting, refinishing—Kirsten had a knack for making each piece look as though it had always belonged right there and nowhere else.Doors

Fandom: The OC Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: callmesandyAuthor Website: lower case k Why this must be read:Oh, wow. Can't believe this hasn't been rec'ed before. Futurefic, written in the first season. Seth and Ryan are shaking up. It's really as easy as that. So, "A list?"
"Yes. Choice one, bowling, mini-golf, one of those things. Not both or really, more than one." Ryan shrugs again and looks at the show. Seth says, "Choice two, there's a new bar. It's hot, totally hot. It's like a hotel bar with the karaoke and the bad décor except it's not in a hotel." Seth grins. Seth likes bars more than Ryan does and twice a year Seth's dragged Ryan to gay bars which left Ryan feeling nothing but awkward.
It's easier for Seth. He told Ryan he was bisexual when he was a sophomore in college, his parents when he was a junior and after that it was a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a boyfriend, a girlfriend per semester until he graduated. Ryan's had sex with three guys in his life and Seth's the only one he slept with more than once. Some Day Those Maps Collide

This is my second turn of the wheel for The OC, and this month (despite the late start!) wer're going to kick it old school. Fandom: The OC Pairing: Ryan/Summer/Seth Author on LJ: lalejandraAuthor Website: ApostatizeWhy this must be read:Do I need to tell you? Look at the pairing! Set post-first season in the summer, this is a strikingly aware story that has Seth as we all wished he was back then. Summer waits and holds her breath and doesn’t move and watches Seth – but he doesn’t move either. He lies on the bed and stares at the ceiling and has an arm bent over his face, so maybe he’s not staring at the ceiling. He’s totally naked, and he’s not what Summer ever thought she’d end up with, especially now that he’s back from wherever he was all summer – Tahiti, New York, Boston, Seattle, Toronto, Portland, Kalamazoo, blah blah blah, whatever. He’s all. He’s all like. Like tan. And lean. And long. And it’s no wonder that Ryan couldn’t say no to him because Summer couldn’t say no to him either, and Summer’d never had trouble saying no to him before.Cipher

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: maudgonneWhy this must be read:I know I promised het this time, but it's suddenly the 30th I selfishly wanted to be the OC reccer that got to link y'all up with Temple Bar. It's a seven parter that started 6-7-04 and was finished 7-13-05, which is a long stretch, but it was worth it. This fic is future fic, set in the summer between high school's end and college's beginning with Seth on study abroad. The story is about a surprise visit from Ryan and its aftermath. What Maud portrays best, I think, is the ways that fear can affect us in all the small ways, the way we lie and avoid confrontation because we don't know what will happen. And that one of the hardest things about becoming an adult is understanding how to take responsibility for both what you do and what you don't do. And that relationships are a negotiation. Maud doesn't sentimentalize either character, she lets them be flawed and miserable and confused and happy. The perspective is Seth's, but he has an insight to Ryan (though it doesn't keep him from making mistakes). ( Excerpt: )Temple Bar--link is to memories pages which has all seven chapters.

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: aflowerinrainWhy this must be read:I seem to be focusing on the slash here in the OC fandom. Partially, I think, because although there are as many good het writers as there are slash writers, there's a lot more bad het writers, so there's more to dig through to find the gems. But back to Cam's great story. It's set after the S2 finale. Trey, Ryan's brother, is dead from Marissa's gun shot, and Ryan is reeling. Cam portrays a vulnerable Ryan, one trying to find his footing again, and a Seth who trys to be the best friend he can be. I like this story because it portrays how difficult it can be to be a friend to someone who is grieving, how hard it is to do the right thing. The author goes for the quiet moments, the spaces in between big emotions, to show the negotiation of long term relationships. The conceit of the story, that Seth buys "The complete book of questions" and uses it to talk to Ryan because he can't figure out how to talk to his friend anymore, works well. Cam shapes the story so that the questions seem random and not jerry-rigged by the writer to bring about any a-ha moments. The structure of the story is subtle and the pace works with the plot. So, enjoy, feed the author! ( Excerpt: )The Complete Books of Questions.

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Theresa-centric, mentions of Seth/Ryan. Author on LJ: areyouannieWhy this must be read:This is another reflective character piece after all. Although I had issues with the Theresa story as it played out (how quickly it came up, and then how a wop-bam-boom, she's beaten by her boyfriend! she's pregnant! huh?), her character was intriguing and left a lot of room for writers to fill out her backstory and tie it in with Ryan's. I like this story for the quiet strength it gives Theresa. I also like it for Theresa's understanding of the intersection of luck and choice. I like the portrayal of Theresa's feelings as mixed and complicated. ( Excerpt: )Today Never Happened Before.

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: callmesandyAuthor's Website: lowercase k collected. Why this must be read:I just wanted to give a story by k. as an excuse for everyone to visit her site and read all her fic in any fandom ( ( Author pimp alert! )). K. does that thing that Lorrie Moore is so good at--capturing the unexpected weight and undercurrents of ordinary moments. She gives glimpses of the emotional depth of characters and events, without getting bogged down in the drama. This is a happy story, without being treacley. It's a futurefic with Ryan and Seth as adults, and a Marissa who is as reactive as ever. The plot is a standard one--meeting the ex in the future, but the characters are nicely drawn. Hey, it's a theme with my recs! Next rec will be all about the plot, maybe. ( Excerpt: )Some Days These Maps Collide.

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Gen. Ryan. Trey. Rosa. (Maybe Ryan/cigarettes) Author on LJ: cianconnellWhy this must be read:This story captures one of the things that made me fall in love with this show--the sense of displacement and fear and bravado that characterized S1 Ryan Atwood. Cianconnell gets into Ryan's head, showing his muddle as he tried to make sense of his place in the Cohen family. The author also does a nice job of filling out backstory and paints a very real picture of Ryan's life as younger brother to Trey. By using a POV switch to a tertiary character at the end of the story, Cianconnell gives us perspective, lets us see Ryan as he can't see himself. Again, I've chosen a story with not a lot of overall plot, but one that fleshes out characters in a real and sympathetic manner. ( Excerpt: )The Tell.

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Seth/Summer, Seth/Zach, hint of Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: amerellaAuthor's Website: HereWhy this must be read: Amerella excels at showing the identity/sexual identity confusion that marks adolescence, and she does a particularly good Seth. This story, as with her other stories, is all about character and dialogue--Seth's dialogue with himself and with other characters. The dialogue is sharp and funny and real. ( Excerpt: )Ruin my lifeSequel to Unwritten, which was recced here in May.

Fandom: THE O.C Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: l_vera01 (though I don't see any entries there) Author Website: Intimate WarriorsWhy this must be read:I've always greatly enjoyed fics where a peripheral character observes and reacts to the main pairing. There's something about seeing my favorite characters from the eyes of someone who's not the main love interest or the best friend or the enemy--I don't know what it is, but it gets me every time. I think in many cases the appeal is that when a story of this kind is done well, the narrator is someone more objective, someone with a new perpective. In this story, the narrator is Kristen, and the perspective she has on Ryan is very different than, say, the perspective Seth would have if the story were told from his point of view. This is a Kristen who is maternal in the best way--the mother who watches and worries and loves her boys, who has to deal with unexpected situations and things that don't make her happy, but who (no matter how much she may question the wisdom of her children's choices) ends up trusting them anyway. It's a characterization that struck me as particularly true. Ryan and Seth

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: hackthisAuthor Website: dysfunctionalWhy this must be read:As promised, here's entry #2 in Riverlight's Quest to Provide Porny Recs. Because really, who ever has enough porn? Not me. This rec is the first story by the inimitable Hackthis I ever read, and one of my very first O.C. fics as well, and as far as I'm concered every O.C. fic should be like this: sweet, hot, funny, and sexy. (Hey, I'm upfront about what I like: Seth and Ryan and slash, and, well, if not Wuv Twoo Wuv, at least some hot sex. Luckily, in this fandom, that's not too difficult to find. ) And Hackthis, as always, provides.
( “Tell me what you wanted it to be like,” Ryan said, his breath warm against Seth’s ear. )

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Summer/Ryan Author on LJ: lalejandraAuthor Website: apostatizeWhy this must be read:Real life's been crazy lately, in that sort of "it makes my head want to explode" kind of way. So my solution? I've spent the past four hours online, reading porn. Clearly a good plan, right? 'Cause lord knows, if there's going to be any head-exploding going on, I want it to be for good reasons, and what better reason than our favorite fictional characters getting it on? So just in case any of you are in the same boat, over the next few days I'll bring you some deliciously sexy recs, which hopefully you'll enjoy as much as I did. Today's entry is by the fabulous lalejandra, she of such porny gems as Some Girls Wander By Mistake (which I totally was going to rec before I realized someone had beaten me to it). This is another Summer/Ryan piece, and it was good enough to lure me away from slash, for once. Why should you read it? Well, porn. But also, really intelligent!Summer with a lifetime subscription to the Wall Street Journal, Ryan listening to Dido, and a surprisingly sweet ending. And, did I mention it's totally hot? Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: candle_beckAuthor Website:o.c. fic is archived hereWhy this must be read:Well, I've been pretty quiet this month with the O.C. reccage, but I do have a good story for you today! This is one of my favorites--it always makes me smile, in that "oh, this is good writing" kind of way. candle_beck has been recced here before, with good reason; her stories seem to capture the boys, at least for me. And this one--well, it's a phone conversation, so it's all about dialogue, and really, what is more emblematic of these two (Seth especially) than dialogue? And it's perfectly done. You think it's all light and humorous, and it is that, but look close enough and you'll see that there are little glimmers of seriousness showing through the lightheartedness. Seth, iPod-less, calls Ryan for entertainment: ( Read more... ), but later it comes out that there is, as usual, more to it than that. ( Read more... ) And if that doesn't convince you, well, don't you just love the idea of Seth distracted by spinny abulance lights? Go, read--you won't be sorry. Salvage

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: hackthisAuthor Website: dysfunctionalWhy this must be read: hackthis is one of those authors who can turn out brilliant fic in whatever fandom she puts her hand to, the sort of writer whose work will make you venture into fandoms you don't know just so that you can read more of her stuff. And her O.C. fic is no exception to that rule. This story is shorter and simpler than many of her other pieces, but it's a lot of fun. You ever wonder how Sandy and Kirsten would react to the realization that Seth and Ryan are sleeping together? Zahra did, and here's the result. There are some laugh-out-loud moments here, and Sandy just steals the scene every time he appears: reason enough to go read it! Hetero-Lifemates

Hello! I'm riverlight, and I'll be your friendly neighborhood driver around The O.C. this month. I'm pretty new to fandom, but hey, I figure this works out well for you all--it means I've read a ton of fic lately. So, without further ado, my first rec: Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Seth/Ryan; also, if you read the story she links to, Seth/Seth (go with it) Author on LJ: torchthisnow, a.k.a clem k. Author Website: None that I know of-- Why this must be read:This is, admittedly, not your normal O.C. fic. Sure, there's plenty of hot boysex and plenty of snark. But there's also time travelling. I know, I know. Crazy, right? But just go with it. The ending will just blow you away, in that you'll-still-be-thinking-about-this-tomorrow kind of way. ( Seth jumps time less often, which he's okay with. It happens now and then, though, which is why he finds himself in his parents' kitchen on a sunny September morning in 2002. ) missdeviant wrote what I suppose could be called a prequel to this, and I had a hard time deciding which story to rec, because they're both brilliant, but since clem provided a link to the former at the top of her story you can (and should) read both. Seth is 15, and 26

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: None. Ryan-centric Authors on LJ: maudgonneAuthor Websites: none listed Why this must be read:This story is written in perfect and graceful prose - one of those types of stories that you love and hate because you didn't write it. Set after the finale of season two (so spoilers through season two), Ryan comes to terms with his feelings toward his brother and pays a visit to his mother. I can't do this story enough justice in any sort of write up, so I shall live it to an excerpt: ( In case there are those who haven't seen finale of season two yet... ) So go read Breathe, and leave feedback for the author!

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Seth/Ryan, Marissa/OMC, pre-Anna/Zach Author on LJ: kissingchaos9Author Website: none listed Why this must be read:It's written from Summer's point of view and the Summer voice alone is worthy of a read. It's spot on, like you wonder if maybe the author *is* Summer...it's set in the future and it's one of those endless possibilities stories where Summer is roommates with Seth and Ryan. An excerpt: "She came home early, something about speaking different love languages and not being fluent in emotionally-unavailable bastardese. I don't know, we'll get the whole story tonight." Seth stands up and stretches, and Summer wrinkles her nose. "You should take a shower. You smell like Mr. Goodbar, and I'm not taking about the chocolatey candy." True to form, Seth sniffs under his arm and grimaces. "Good idea. Get some corn, too, if you please. We'll do a dinner party thing."
Summer rolls her eyes, again, but smiles and kisses him on the cheek. Sure, most times she wants to punch him or slap him, but that doesn't means he doesn't love him, too.So go read and embrace the wonderful Summer voice: An architect, a comic book artist and a fashion designer walk into a bar....

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: l_vera01Author's Website: Intimate Warriors Why this must be read:If you love angst, this is the story for you. It’s chock-full without being sappy. It works brilliantly as a story set after the gang’s senior year. Ryan and Seth have been a couple for awhile, despite Marissa’s interference and Ryan’s curiosity regarding Seth’s first “boyfriend.” The characters maintain the trademarks that make them distinguishable from each other, all the while living in this world that Vera created as a possibility in the future. If you’re still not convinced, here is a little excerpt: Seth has been trying for months to get used to the brooding on a ‘boyfriend’ level. Lois Lane did and more importantly, Dick Grayson did, while managing to get some of his own brooding done. But neither Dick nor Lois had to deal with Marissa Cooper. Lex Luthor and Two-Face were definitely *not* Marissa Cooper.
It would be easier if she were just plain evil, but people, namely Ryan and his mom and dad, are prone to using Newport-correct words like ‘troubled’ and ‘vulnerable’ when describing her. Seth would go for ‘alcoholic’ and ‘out of her mind’ but those words will never actually pass his lips in Ryan’s presence or Julie Cooper’s. He does know better than to think their coming out of the closet in Newport society got her started again. Summer, for one, is sure it never actually stopped. On hiatus, maybe, but spiked lattes in the morning are apparently the only way to start the day.So go read, love, and feedback away! Part One Part Two

Hello, I'm Tommygirl, and I shall be taking another turn driving the wonderful O.C. category. I'll try to mix it up a bit, but it always comes back to Seth/Ryan for me. Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: hyperfocused Author Website: Poetry, Fics, and Random Fandom Obsessions Why this must be read: It's a kink fic that has blindfolds involved. Ryan keeps distracting Seth and Seth pretends to be angered by it, if not turned out. What's not to love about that scenario? It doesn't hurt that hyperfocused's characterizations are always spot on and the writing makes me squee with delight. It's definitely a worthwhile read if you enjoy some good Seth/Ryan kink. "It wasn't fair. Ryan had been distracting him all night, walking around lifting weights in his wifebeater, licking his lips, and most of all, giving Seth that look. It was keeping Seth from doing anything productive, like studying for his finals, playing the new Star Wars game, or plotting how to get Summer back - this time. Though with Ryan acting the way he was, Summer wasn't at the top of Seth's mind. Right now, he was supposed to be sketching Ryan in his costume, but Ryan was making that very difficult."Go read and leave the author feedback - Driven To Distraction

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Seth/Trey; Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: julissak01Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: I really like this fic because every time I re-read it I find something new I like. There was an explosion of Seth/Trey fic after Trey’s debut episodes. This one is very, very high on the list of great Seth/Trey fics. (Trey is Ryan’s older brother. See the family resemblance? Neither do I. Trey was in jail for stealing a car. He moved into the Cohen’s poolhouse for a while.) ( excerpt )Supersonic

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Ryan/Seth Author on LJ: wearemanyAuthor Website: i am one and we are manyWhy this must be read: What fandom doesn’t have an AU where one of the main characters was a hooker? It’s kind of a requirement. Every fandom seems to have its own version of Pretty Woman, except usually without a happy ending. Or the shopping scene. Or anything other than the hookery... Anyways, this fic is superb. This is one of those fics that make me wish I was better at reccing because I know I’m not doing it justice. The sex! The dialogue! Everything! Perfection. Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Luke/Seth Author on LJ: paranoidkittenAuthor Website: paranoid kitten’s fic journalWhy this must be read: Who’s Luke, you ask? Well, he’s Marissa’s ex-boyfriend from season 1. And he’s hot. We discovered his Dad was gay that season so they had to move to Portland. Yep, that’s the OC for ya. Anyhoo, this ficlet is cute. And it’s an unlikely pairing, sure, but it just seems so truthful and Luke-like (there really isn’t enough Luke slash out there). I love it. And hopefully you will too. Genetic

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Theresa/Trey, Theresa/Ryan Author on LJ: torchthisnowAuthor Website: unknown Why this must be read:Most people who know me know that I only read slash. So if I rec a het!fic, it must be splendiferous. Well, this is het and this is splendiferous. I’m usually heterophobic when it comes to fanfiction in the OC, so I rarely read a good Theresa fic, but I think this one more than made up for the lack. The characterization is so spot on. I only wish clem’s ending for Theresa and Trey could have been the same on the show. Times Like These
