Why this must be read: Because you're already looking at me strangely for reccing a story without any of the main characters of Lord of the Rings playing a huge role. The premise is simple: who are the poor souls who had to sit in the mountains for days and months just in case Gondor ever chose to light the beacons?
This is the tale of Deragar and Bremand, two men charged with keeping that watch. Beautifully written, it casts the familiar story of the Lord of the Rings through a new prism--how people not involved in the highest echelons of power see the war.
You'll love it. Trust me.

It is a lovely story. Thank you for pointing it out to me again. I haven't read it in months. :)
