Why this must be read:
If you read SportsNight, you know the wonders of Sorkinesque banter. It's harder to do than it looks, but when it's done well, it's brilliant. My favorite pieces of SN fiction all have that quick back-and-forth, that wittiness, and this piece is no exception. It's written as if it were a SportsNight script, and perhaps the highest compliment I could pay it would be to say that if I didn't know better, I might think it were a lost episode of the show.
DAN: Can I say something?
CASEY: No. You can't.
DAN: I'd like to say something.
CASEY: I'd like not to hear it.
DAN: Okay. That's fair.
CASEY: Thanks. I thought so.
DAN: Oh wait, no, it's not. Casey, we're lost.
CASEY: We are not *lost*, Dan. Lost is Columbus ending up in the Caribbean instead of India. Lost is Robinson Crusoe. Lost is Luthor Sach's sense of decency. We are just...displaced.
DAN: Displaced being synonymous with lost.
CASEY: No! It's not! To the untrained eye it may look as though we are lost, but we are most emphatically not.
DAN: Okay, we're not lost.
CASEY: *Thank* you.
DAN: We just don't know where the hell we are…
CASEY: You do know that I've secretly never liked you, right?
DAN: …or where the hell we're going.
CASEY: Because this whole friendship thing was totally a sham. Just a ploy to keep you close enough to kill at any moment.
DAN: Very Machiavellian of you, Casey.
CASEY: I try.

Also, apologies for the fact that it's a third of the way into the month and this is my first rec. In retrospect, I should have known that September (i.e. the month of "School's Beginning Again, Oh No!" and "I Have To Move All My Stuff Into A New Apartment?") wouldn't be a great time to drive the Crack Van. But never fear, I'll do my best to provide a good story ever few days from here on out! You can expect a fair bit of nuttiness, lots of humor, lots of Danny/Casey, and a lot of "theirloveissocanon!" So consider yourselves warned. ;)
