Three Steps Away by Fabella (PG-13)

Fandom: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Pairing: Nick Stokes/Greg Sanders
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Another post-Grave Danger fic, this one starting somewhere in the beginning of season five and running until Nick gets discharged from the hospital. It's really very beautiful, that's the main thing that attracted me to this story. It's probably also the best post-GD Nick/Greg story written. Nick's misgivings and paranoia end his relationship with Greg until the events in Grave Danger and some advice from Papa Grissom force him to re-evaluate his priorities. This one has not a happy, but rather a hopeful, ending, which I like and I think fits well with the episode. There can't be a happy ending for Nick, at least not right away, not after everything that's happened, both in Grave Danger and earlier in the fic.

[livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever's Nick isn't destroyed by the events of GD. Don't get me wrong, he's in pain, both physical and emotional, but he's able to talk and laugh at the same time. The experience changes him, but the Nicky we see in the hospital is still the Nicky we knew the day before. The effect is that the author manages to avoid falling into the angsty melodramatic trap of many post-GD fics. I love Nick's relationship with Mrs. Stokes here. She's a real momma who loves her son, but thinks she knows what's best for him.

This is [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever's only CSI story, and it's a shame. She has a real grasp of the characters, something that's lacking in a lot of CSI fanfic. Her one foray into our fandom was an extremely successful one, so I guess she stopped while she was ahead.

“They love you very much.” Grissom paused obviously, thought-lines tightening visibly at his temples as he considered whether or not to continue. Nick’s legs shifted together nervously under the blanket, and he winced when another sore opened, a crisp immediate pain that quickly dulled, diluted by the morphine. After clearing his throat several times and watching Nick squirm from over his glasses, Grissom finally spoke, his voice softer than before. “In fact, I’d say they love you enough to accept every part of you, even the parts they may not like.”

Nick’s heart gave one, plunging roll; a lot like those roller coasters Grissom was so fond of riding. Grissom was wearing that creepy uncle body again, peering inside Nick’s head and finding all Nick’s truths. He’d be killer at cards.

“What?” Nick pushed out, the word barely audible.

“I had to send Greg home last night. He was all over the place. He couldn’t focus on anything.” Grissom cocked his head as if listening to a foreign, high sound. “Strange, isn’t it? He was utterly focused while we searched for you.”

Greg. He hadn’t been by. Nick kept expecting him to walk through the door, hand rubbing the back of his neck, the tips of his hair standing on end as if they wanted to reach out to Nick when Greg’s arms wouldn’t. So much left to do.

Morphine couldn’t dilute that hurt.
