Why this must be read:

One of my favourite things about the Jack and Daniel pairing - besides the fact that Daniel is in it, okay - is the pain. These characters have been through a lot of things that sucked hard, and the idea that they can find love with each other, with anyone, underneath all that destruction and sadness, is just very pretty.

And that's what I like to think that this story is about.

Upstairs, Daniel's still out in the hallway when he gets back. He's futzing with his tie, or pretending to, but he looks Jack up and down in that sad, careful way that they can't afford at the negotiating table.

"You look terrible," he says, not unkindly. "You should go home."
