Why this must be read: I usually don't care for this much angst, but this story definitely works for me. As the title implies, both men have their demons though neither is a thoughtless jerk, a situation I heartily dislike in a story. No matter what they may have done to one another, that they love each other is never in doubt...at least, not to the reader. Napoleon, especially, shines as he suffers for a wrong he can't seem to set right.

I think my only complaint is that the story ended too soon for me. Though the outcome is not in doubt, I would have loved another scene or two.

I know what you mean. But I've always liked stories that posit a relationship between the two men in a slash pair before the time of the show. I'm big on "Kirk and Spock meet at Starfleet Academy" stories, and this is along the same lines. I haven't watched that many episodes recently but I do remember Illya being sort of snarky with Napoleon from time to time. But she may have meant the story to be an AU since she does change Napoleon's leaving and for how long they're apart.

Well, I have come into this fandom late, but I am very happy to have been directed to your lovely recs site. It also amuses me that I write a rec for this fic (before reading yours) that is very similar in several ways to what you say. And so true about the end- let us see more of the happy ending!
