Why this must be read:
A common fic-setup in Hornblower fandom is to "fix" the ending of the movie "Retribution." This story doesn't; it takes the canon and adds a beautifully painful scene just past the ending. Archie Kennedy left something behind, in William Bush's keeping, and Bush has to decide what to do with it.
The story is told from Bush's POV, and the portraits of Hornblower and Kennedy, caught out of the metaphorical corner of his eye, are as lovely as what we learn about Bush himself through his actions.
