Why this must be read:

Yes, I'm reccing my own story. I can't see in the rules that it's forbidden, though it's clearly not the convention to do so, and I can see why. But as a small fandom, OUaTiM will go off the screen come November, so it's my job to get you all the good stuff I can this month, and I honestly think this story shouldn't be left off. I'm sure you'll consider the source in deciding what you want to read.

Rather than toot my own horn too much, I'll quote someone else's review. You can find Rusalka's review here. She wrote a better review than I could, and probably a more honest one than I would.

The Mariachi movies are particularly well suited to fanfic, I think, because most of the problems that plague talented but unpolished amateur writers -- purple prose, over-the-top characterization, melodrama, angsty wallowing, gleeful character-torture -- are all present right there in the canon, and you have to embrace them if you're going to embrace the fandom at all. This is not a fandom where one goes looking for subtle psychological insights and delicately crafted prose. This is a fandom where one goes looking for things that go boom.

Things go boom real good in Sons of Mexico. El Mariachi and Lorenzo take on yet another cartel and it all goes horribly, violently wrong. It's all Sands' fault, of course, but Sands is having problems of his own, and being blind and psychotic is the least of them. There are gunfights and explosions and big nasty villains, and I could totally see Robert Rodriguez filming it all in my head. And in the middle of all the boom, there's actually a really interesting characterization of Sands and the way he and El relate to each other. The writing is a bit clunky in places, and the villains are totally two-dimensional, but it's all part of the charm. Just relax and enjoy it.

I am so glad you did this. I was hoping that someone did it for you but as you are driving the van it was only for you to recommend. I have ALWAYS loved your story and I was getting really worried that you would not get the recognition and praises that you deserve for this great 'kaboom'-style story. So *hugs the author* I am very-very happy here!

Aw, thanks so much, hon. I considered carefully whether or not to do it. I'm putting my story in some very august company, but I figured I'm trying to rec a wide variety of things for a wide variety of tastes so people can really sample the fandom. It helped to have Rusalka's review to steal. I wrote her, btw, to ask for permission to use it, and I, er, never heard back. *eep* I hope it's okay.

Well, shoot. Guess I've been operating under some mistaken assumptions. Guess I'd better go blow something up in the *other* sense of the word.

This sounds a little strange coming from the woman who wrote the high speed car chase with shootout and singing in Clockwork Mexico! You obviously believe in things that go boom. *g*

*grin* I suppose that's up there with Kate not liking guns. "Clockwork" was just...yeah, okay, things went boom....
