Reviewing the situation, and Instant Karma (2 stories) by Rebecca Brothers (R)

Fandom:  BLAKES 7

Why this must be read:

Two stories, the first one is more like a vignette and the second, much longer, starts where the other left us and takes us along for a very enjoyable ride with our favourite heroes -all of them.

So, after Malodaar Vila decides to leave (Yay him!) so of course nothing happens as it does in the show. And as he's brooding in a bar a slightly battered rebel comes to him and... guess what??? It all goes from there.

Those who know the author have no doubt that she's a great writer. She also writes good interesting believable plots. The story's gen but we're not that far from slash -- Avon and Blake do have strong feelings for each other  --but the others are here too -- a wary Tarrant and a very enjoyable Vila. Oh and some guest stars too. Almost everyone. And the end is *so* satisfying!

An exerpt?

"Where're we going?" Vila asked, climbing inside.
"My base. It's not too far," Blake said, climbing behind the controls.
"Your base? Sounds like you've made some progress." Vila also hoped he'd had some flying lessons. "You know, I never did find out what this place is called," he commented, looking out the window to watch the lights of the town fade, replaced by a seemingly endless vista of trees.
"It's called Gauda Prime." Blake shot him a look, a smile playing at his eyes and mouth. "Welcome back to the revolution, Vila."
Vila chose not to reply with the rude remark that leapt to his lips.

Go, read, it's worth it!

Please put rating info in the subject line in place of "gen". Thanks!

Me, I understand "gen". I haven't a clue what "R" stands for. All this PG-13 and NC-17 is not exactly culturally inclusive; AFAIK nobody uses it outside the US...

I don't care if the US system is used or not, but there must be an indication of age-appropriateness in the subject line. "Slash" and "gen" and the like are indicated in the pairing line. This is nothing new.

Sorry, but what does R indicate? Restricted?

[identity profile] twigged.livejournal.com 2005-12-10 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, restricted. In theatres it means parental supervision is needed for those 17 and under. In fic, I think it's generally accepted to indicate non-explicit sex or graphic violence.

I was confused because R can only be sold in licensed sex shops in Britain and so would be explicit.

I am also disturbed by the apparent equivalence of non-explicit sex and graphic violence. In film terms I would expect non-explicit sex to be rated 15 and graphic violence 18.

Adult supervision stops after 12A.

You and me both. One of the many frustrations of modern America.

Look, I'm just trying to cover my ass here. As I said above I don't care what system is used as long as it indicates age-appropriateness.

Fair enough, I'm trying to visualise the equivalents between to two systems. Your R seems much milder than I would expect for an R, your ratings stop at 17, mine at 18.

12A now are giving a reason for that particular rating, for example, "King Kong" "contains frightening elements, moderate violence and frequent peril", but "Mrs Henderson Presents" "contains moderate sex references and one use of strong language" I don't know how either film is rated under your system.
