Infatuation by MissAnnThropic (PG)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: John Crichton, Scorpius (gen, despite any implications of the title)
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: MissAnnThropic
Why this must be read:
I promised you some character pieces, and this is a fabulous fic set during 3.20/3.21, Into the Lion's Den. This two-part episode featured the climactic showdown between John Crichton, Human quarry, and the unshakable nemesis of his every waking moment: the Scarran/Sebacean hybrid scientist, Scorpius.
MissAnnThropic takes us - ironically enough - inside Scorpius' head, managing a brilliant first-person POV that resounds with authenticity. The character is richly drawn, fully realized, menacing and lonely and vulnerable and relentless and underneath it all, the tiniest, merest bit regretful that his relationship with Crichton will forever remain adversarial... yet the realization doesn't hinder Scorpius' ability to savor the cat-and-mouse mind game that is the hallmark of every interaction between them.
MissAnnThropic treats Scorpius as the impossibly complex quasi-villain Farscape's writers envisioned him to be, and for that reason alone, for avoiding the opposing cliches of utterly evil/completely misunderstood caricatures that all-too-often masquerade as Scorpius in fic, this story should be read.
We both go through every day with awareness of the other a constant companion. I dare say Crichton knows me as well as I understand him. Not even his shipmates, not even my closest associates, can comprehend us as we unravel each other.
I have spent cycles trailing him, delving into him, and in his attempts to stay one step ahead of my pursuit he’s likewise pursued me. We are both the hunter and the prey.
He is near now as the hunter, for all the posturing I make I know this. The quarry has turned and faced his attacker, and I relent. Crichton has me, not I him, but it is all the same.
